just to clarify for the young ones amongst us: in those days goalkeepers used to be able to pick up back passes and you only got 2 points for a win.

You were also allowed to tackle and not allowed to roll around on the floor like a nancy if someone so much as blew in your ear.

If you arrived in the west stand at 7.35, wouldn't you have missed the first 5 minutes. i'm sure we used to kick off at 7.30 for evening games in those days.

I'm sure i was there for that match. If i recall Mike Summerbee was playing for them (player/manager?). they were 1 - 0 up, last few minutes and they had a free kick on the edge of the big old south bank penalty area. Summerbee takes it and passes it all the way back to their goalkeeper in front of the north bank. boos all round a rather empty RH and southport go home with 2 points!

We did lose 1-0 at home that season, so sounds like the same match.

You may well be right, I can't actually remember. But without named seats etc it was just a case of getting to 'your' barrier to find the rest of your mates. But if I was late it was probably worth it for the last pint of DD. If you were there for that match don't suppose you could tell me what happened in the first 5 minutes, did I miss anything?

I was reading in the Southend Standard last night that Arthur Rowley is sticking with the same team that beat Cambridge United on Monday night.

I liked that 4-2-4 system he played, as well. Must admit.

So looks like it's :-

Belotti, Smith, Albeson, Elliott, Townsend, Moody, Terry Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Moore, Guthrie and Booth.

He didn't say who the sub will be, but I reckon It'll be Peter Taylor. Someone said a big club want to buy him, when I was in the Joint & Jar last Saturday.:nope:

Was a toss up between the Alpha two and Scamps last night. We ended up doing the Alpha as it was grab a granny night with a shed full of hen parties. Golden Lion tomorrow night then the West Stand cos we're grown ups. Couple of beers then a gentle stroll round to Shakespeare drive around 7.35.

KOs at 7.30, RHB!

Whoops - now seen that Crowstone's alerted you to this. I hate missing the start of games.

A predilection with punctuality tends to come with age I have found. I hate being late now but in those days I was less bothered. Especially if I had mates like Crowstone to bring me up to speed.

We didn't do a lot of things in 1974. For example pedantry wasn't invented. Though judging by your first post you will go back and check that too.
We did not play Manchester United either in 74 , I did not have to check that either .

Moody, Townsend, Cunningham my fav's. Spuds in there too next to AR.

Blimey, there's some goalscoring in that middle row of 'ThorpeBay's pic, there!

An we've still got Terry, Terry, Terry Johnson..on the wing, on the wing. Think I will bunk in at the North Bank toilets, save some money for The Sutton and Annabellas after.

I was actually only born this morning, but I'm hoping to get down to the game if the buses are running on time.

Anyone know if you can get DM's in pre-walker sizes?

I think Eastern National have started up a route just for the football ground and pre-walker DM's, I'd try Millettts.

They're pretty good.

Also, I think they do new born baby sized Parka coats, in case it rains.

What goes around comes around:thumbsup:.

Look at Dave Cunningham breaking the mould though with his white boots. Must have got them from Johnson & Sage opposite my school at Chalkwell Hall, or poss HW Stones in Leigh?

love this thread..heaven..liked d&d..but tartan bitter, mcewans bitter!! ok, but you could NEVER beat bottled Newcastle brown..as for watneys..ffs...that was crap. what about mild & bitter!!.bring back sideburns, flares,my hair, north bank standing & my mates there..past & present..luv them

Southend Standard Update :-

Peter Taylor: Southend United face another tough test against Southport

PETER Taylor has urged Southend United not to underestimate Southport in tomorrow night’s all-important Division 4 match at Roots Hall, after the Lancashire outfit held them to a 0-0 draw in the corresponding fixture last season.

The tricky winger commented "Southport are a very good team, having seen them on Granada TV in last weeks 1-0 win over Workington"

"They like to play exciting football and their full backs get some good crosses into the inside right, whenever they can"

"I think It will be a cracking match for the 4,500 coming along, but I'm sure the North Bank can sing us to victory once again" said the highly-rated forward.

"Anyway, I've got to dash as someone wants me to do my Norman Wisdom impression" he added, before disappearing on the Number 7 bus into town.
