Official Match Thread Southend United vs Rochdale

Coker was poor last Saturday, but over the course of the season in my mind he’s in our top five performers (Ralph, Taylor, Scott-Morriss and Morton would be the others now Pepple has departed).

He actually took up some really good positions at Maidenhead, but his first touch and control was uncharacteristically poor, leading us to turn over possession in advanced positions. That means there’s the potential for a huge improvement if he gets that right.

I’ll be fascinated to see if he’s deployed on the right or left of a three like last week, in behind a two as he played during his youth team days, or as part of the midfield three in a 3-5-2, or even a combination of all three in and out of possession to try to give us control of the game.
I think the key is he gives Kev much more tactical flexibility. I expect his role to change during the course of the game as Rochdale adapt to our shape.

Presumably, the Three Amigos have looked at how the Dale set up and have responded accordingly.

It's still rather negative. 532/352. Have you seen how poor we have been playing in that formation and how much better we have been playing with a 343 formation?

On Tuesday I watched us score 2 goals from corners and one old fashioned long ball flicked on by a number 9 and some good pace and finish by the second striker.

So 3 goals that had nothing to do with formations. What we do have is a group of inconsistent players not inconsistent systems.

I will be surprised if there are >2.5 goals (in bookie speak) given that Rochdale currently have the best defence in this league (yes I know they they have games in hand)

Two key factors from Tuesday night;

1) the deliveries into the box were brilliant.

2) chances were taken when they arose.

As you say mate, nothing to do with formation

We played with that formation on Tuesday mate.

The only change from Tuesday is the personnel. Coker has been decent this season, but agree he’s looked off it recently.
At this levels players are more inconsistent- but Coker gives way more decent performances than duds…

We played 343 on Tuesday with 3 strikers. The line up and formation today was much more like against Maidenhead and that was one of Cokers worst games in a Southend shirt

Hop and Kendall up front with Walker acting as the bridge between midfield and forward line isn’t 3 up front. We started we three up front, I grant you that, but it changed after about 15-20 minutes.

Coker has been chosen to play the role that Walker had, because he’s more versatile. You can debate the efficacy of that (which would be an interesting one)

I guess we’ll soon find out.

Yes a real delight to see one become two from corners.

Just like York did to us. It happens at this level. Last Saturday GSM heads a corner against the bar. So one doesn’t become two because we don’t have the essential winning mentality that teams who get promoted need.

The high press of the 3 strikers definitely made a difference. The attacking intent from the strikers made a difference too. We played higher up the pitch with more forward passes

What a surprise, Back to two up top after beating Halifax with 3, is it that hard to just admit we play so much better in a 3-4-3 instead of being so inconsistent and changing it back for absolutely no reason then to prove he can make 3-5-2 work again?
