On the eve of such a huge game, the feeling I've currently got is so weird but also so wonderful. I've not felt it as a Southend fan for so long. I'm absolutely buzzing but nervous in equal measure. Those are contrasting feelings in football that are only felt when something super positive could potentially happen. How long has it been since we can say we've felt that way?!!!

It's honestly unbelievable to try and fathom the feelings that were felt over a year ago before attending matches. That gut-wrenching feeling of dread, not knowing if the game would even go ahead as our water may be cut off or that we couldn't turn the lights on, or worst still, the club had died! We were living on life support, minute to minute and any comprehension of positive energy was totally unthinkable. It was the darkest black hole that any fan could endure.

Yet, I sit here giddily typing away with true excitement running through my veins and it makes me realise how grateful and happy I am that tomorrow is even possible. Let's enjoy the occasion and bask in the knowledge that our incredible club is back. Enjoy fellow shrimpers. Utb!
It's going to be a strange afternoon/evening tomorrow because of our 5.30pm kick off. There will be excitement/disappointment across the best part of five hours. Which game shall I watch at 3pm? Probably Boston v Gateshead but I'll have my phone and my two tablets tuned to live Flashscore for the Halifax, Altrincham and Rochdale games.....

Can't wait........

Big game - for Southend United boss Kevin Maher (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher has urged his side to keep their head clear ahead of tomorrow’s crunch clash with Wealdstone.

The Shrimpers sit one place and two points outside the play-offs ahead of this weekend’s important encounter while Wealdstone are one place and two points ahead of the relegation zone.

But Maher does not want his players to become distracted by the size of the game in front of another packed Roots Hall.

“Our job is to remain calm and logical with regards to how we go about the game,” stressed Maher.

“We focus on that and making sure we do our job because that’s the most important thing.

“It’s obviously an important game for both teams so it should be a good game, especially with the atmosphere created as well.

“But it’s one we have to stay clear headed and focused on.”

Seventh place Gateshead - who Blues face on the final day of the season next weekend - face a tough looking test at Boston United tomorrow.

And Maher knows it will be impossible to avoid the results of their rivals before the Shrimpers kick off their clash at 5.30pm.

“The timing of the game means both ourselves and Wealdstone will know what’s gone on elsewhere before we play,” said the Blues boss.

“I think it will be impossible to avoid the results because people will tell you.

“It might play a part but from our point of view it won’t change what we’ve got to do in terms of the result.

“It might maybe change the atmosphere and the mood around the place but we have to play with our heads and that’s the most important thing.”

The Shrimpers go into the game fresh from beating Ebbsfleet United 4-0 on Monday.

But Maher is expecting another stern test tomorrow.

“It’s always been close when we’ve played Wealdstone and there’s only ever been one goal in it either way,” said the Blues boss.

“Wealdstone can be a very dangerous team and we’re aware of their threats but we’re focused on ourselves.

“The group are also in a good place off the back of a good result on Monday.

“We have belief but that comes from working hard and making sure we do the basics right.

“Hopefully that means we come out the right side of the result on Saturday too.”

And Maher is already looking forward to sampling the atmosphere.

“A number of times this season we’ve had big crowds in and it makes for a great atmosphere so I’m sure it will be again,” said Maher.

“I don’t mind the kick off either because I think the closer it is to night-time at Roots Hall the better is is.

“There’s a lot riding on the game for both teams so it’s going to be good.”

I think this just goes to show how meaningless a statistic assists really are. Up there with Expected Goals.
The one stat that isn’t subjective is goals per minutes played. On that Rees is 1 goal in every 290 mins, Coker every 350 mins and the rest nowhere.

If you have 3 CM there is zero excuse for not having at least one attacking CM who can deliver goals. Parillon may come good on that meanwhile his records on assists is excellent. Both in the same CM with a more defensively minded option on Sat (Cav, Husin or KAF) might be optimal for a game we need to win. Or Parillon on the left instead of Bridge and KAF in with one of Cav and Husin in the defensive role.

But then I know nothing. I hope Bonne starts up top with Hopper off the bench.

Injuries aside, why would Kevin not start with the same XI that started at Ebbsfleet?

Did actually buy The Echo today but I always appreciate you putting the 'beyond firewall copy' up for us, Ronnie. 👍

I think there's a fine line here, a balance to strike between charging about like nutter's and a calm Zen like "on the beach" state.

“Flag Day” details below.

Bring them along. No mention of inability to drape over sponsor boards etc…

South Upper, you know what to do.

I take my flag away all the time but where i sit in the East stand its not possible to put it anywhere. What i do know away from home we never allowed to cover advertising boards so would imagine it will be the same at RH

C'mon lads if ever there was a time to step up to the plate its now , ive heard in a number of new signings interviews that the lure of playing in front of big passionate crowds was a lure for them to sign .....................well guess what , he we are and its games like this which is why they signed for us over another national league club

its in your hands, the fans are doing their bit and have been all season , pay back time pls

Exactly this, if you cannot perform in front of big crowds, in important games then you shouldn't be at this club, it's as simple as that and tomorrow will show us who really has the minerals to get us back up to the League.

This.

Enough of the big crowd 12th man rhetoric the players and management keep trotting out. We know we’ve more than done our bit.

So often they have flattered to deceive in front of big crowds. Time for the players and management to do their bit and prove they aren’t bottle jobs.

Go for the jugular from the off and play like we are Southend United with 9,000 fans backing you. Crunching challenges, lung busting running, badge kissing, fist pumping, forward thinking, fast paced, attacking football please. We’ll do our bit in return.

Over to you lads…

Yup. All this calm head stuff from Kev.
Fire and passion will see that rocket being fired from the edge of the box, smashing the net and a team talk from Freddy Eastwood wouldnt go amiss. Time for big bollocks, its shoot at every opportunity from now on. Not these token shots (oh i'd better have a go at goal from here, the crowd will be on my back if not) its time to forget some of the neat triangles and rip that net.

Then watch the loudest crowd in this league turn it into a promotion party. As others have said, the fans have put the effort in all season, putting in the miles, 1800 at Braintree, similar at Daggers, not far off 500 on a Wed night at Boston, big away gates at Forest GR, York, Rochdale, huge away crowd at Eastleigh, 6-700 at Woking on a freezing midweeker, around 3-4thousand extra on top of our regular Roots Hall attendances. And we are loud, supportive, provocative, and sing all game. Premier league fans are coming to our games because they love the atmosphere. The Blue Voice has grown to three blocks and is a wall of noise, we've even shown the world's media our true colours.

Just go and win tomorrow lads and then the challenge will be if we can fill 4 thousand seats at Gateshead. The geordies honestly wont know whats hit them.

Husin's stats are absolutely horrid for such a talented player. I'm pretty sure his assist tally isn't much better either.

Been saying this for an age.

A player of his quality should be hitting 10 goals and 10 assists.

As manager. Kev should be demanding more of him in this respect. He has the quality and doesn't use it.

Let's support the team whatever. Please don't boo or groan at a misplaced pass (or indeed a sideways one if what is needed) or a wayward shot. We need to get behind them, even the mistakes - 90 minutes plus of encouragement please.

Whilst I agree Husin is capable of contributing more, only four players in the National League have currently hit double figures for both goals and assists this season as per Playmaker Stats:
Kyle McAllister (FGR), Ollie Pearce (York), Alex Newby (Altrincham) and Luke Hannant (Gateshead)

Nick Houghton of Fylde is one assist away.

Last season only four players achieved the feat: Chris Maguire (Eastleigh), Stephen Wearne (Gateshead), Scott Quigley (Eastleigh), Chris Conn-Clarke (Altrincham).

I wouldn’t place Husin in that bracket of performer.
