Our first home league game of 2025 sees visitors from Yorkshire to Roots Hall in the form of FC Halifax Town.

We’re now into the part of the season where we’re playing teams for a second time, although we did that with York before we’d played Ebbsfleet or Braintree once. The return fixture against the Shaymen doesn’t come that long after our 2-0 win there on 30th November when Pepple and Crowther scored our goals. Since that win, we’ve only lost one game (at York), a period that included the two FA Trophy wins as well as the two wins over the Festive period. Halifax went out of the Trophy (against Basford United on penalties) but have had one win (at Aldershot) and creditable draws at home to Sutton and away at Barnet and Altrincham. They haven’t had a game since Boxing Day with their home fixture on New Year’s Day against AFC Fylde being postponed because of a waterlogged pitch, this was then rearranged for last Saturday, with both clubs being out of the Trophy, only for it to be postponed again this time for a frozen pitch!

Both teams have only lost one league game in the last six, but they’ve had more draws than us and scored fewer goals (the 4 we scored on Boxing Day helped!) which puts us higher in the form table. However with both teams having mean defences and less than potent attacks I’m not expecting a 9-goal thriller on Saturday!

We will have to make at least one change to the team that won against Chris Millington’s men 6 weeks ago, as George Moncur started in midfield that day (alongside Morton and Coker), Walker and Crowther also started and it is likely that they will not be fit enough to start with Kendall and Golding the most likely replacements.

So who would you choose to start the first home league game of 2025 and what do you predict the result will be?

Can't see Halifax bringing many fans at all for this one.

They must have one of the most empty stadiums on a matchday, having a relatively big stadium by national league standards and low crowds.

We have to take the game by the scuff of the neck from the off and go all out to secure 3 points.

I was bemused by the fact that the building works at the Shay football ground look to be exactly as they were last season - not that I looked in great detail. It is odd to have half of the ground empty whilst packing the Southend fans into one part of the side.

With regard to atmosphere, it would be much better to put us behind the goal. Anyway, moving on .....

I thought Halifax looked "tidy" when we played at their place but for some reason (perhaps due to us?) they never really got going.

Halifax is a decent ground now compared to what it was like, whereas ours has gone the other way.
Would love to have a large home terrace like they have. Must be one of the largest terraces left?
It's a pity they only get 1,500 crowds if they got 5k in there it would be a great atmosphere.

If Waldron is fit then start him with Kendall, not sure I can stomach watching Bonne run around like a headless chicken with no end product again this week. Terrible to have lost Pepple but good luck to him.
