“We’ve seen how tough these games can be against teams in a league lower than us. ”

The thing is Mr Mowbray, you got relegated last season and now Blackburn Rovers are a lower league team. The arrogance is astonishing at times.

OK, let's do this !!

Views and preferred / expected line ups please...

Given that Turner and Wordsworth are unlikely to be fit and Ranger is still working off the porridge diet I'd go for the following (only possible change would be to start with Yearwood and not Timlin, but I cannot see PB risking the 17 year old in our first game?). Still hoping we bring in a WOW centreback signing, as we lack height without Turner, but it's getting late in the day now for Saturday;

Oxley
Demetriou Ferdinand White Coker
Kightly Lenny Timlin McLaughlin
Cox MAF

Subs; Smith, Hendrie, Matsuzaka, Yearwood, McGlashan, Robinson, Ba

thoughts?

Zero chance White will not be on bench- covers LB, RB and CB

He can't play and be on the bench.

I wouldn't read much into the opening day line-up. It'll have changed within a couple of games anyway.

I'm more interested by who is on a short leash minutes wise.

My guess is:

McGlashan on for Kightly
Robinson on for Fortune
Timlin on for Yearwood

Just stick that up on the dressing room wall, along with a list of League 1 Clubs for 2017/18.

Sounds like DG won't get a full game.

I believe he was taking about Carlisle and not us, as he said Southend will be stronger than Carlisle

I think he was talking about the game they had with Carlisle

Quite probably, I just fancied a bit of a dig, it's a Southend board after all, and he did use the word 'teams' (tenuous, but there you go).

Yes he was, but it shows a level of arrogance about Blackburn's attitude which means they deserve being knocked down a peg or two. They're in for a hard season of 46 cup finals, because every club will want to put one over a former Premier League champion club. And we've got the best opportunity of all, giving them the wake up call.

Well thats Phil Browns team talk done for him. Pin this on the dressing room wall and make Mowbray realise his team are no longer a "big team"

As long as we dont concede any free kicks just outside the area - ex - Shrimper Charlie Mulgrew is an expert at these ... and we keep the other former player Liam Feeney quiet on the wing we'll be ok.

I reckon fat knacker Paul Caddis wont be able to handle Dru 4Yearwood + will see red , i reckon Anton will have Danny Graham in his pocket , and i reckon Superman McGlashan will fly off the bench and win the game for us !

UTB :clap::clap::clap::clap:

I , for one , cannot wait til Saturday afternoon

I think we'll line up with a tight central 3 in midfield with Kightly swapping wings as a single winger like Worrall did a few years ago.
Other than that probably

Oxley
Demetriou White/A N Other Ferdinand Hendrie
Leonard Yearwood Timlin
Kightly (covering both wings)
Cox MAF

we did start last season with two out and out flying wingers but that left us very open and i'd be surprised if we did that again

I see we've now sold 6 half k home tickets already for this game. I can see this number rising to 7 half k and with Blackburn reportedly sold 1500, I can see a gate of near 9k for Saturday.

That's pretty good going for the first game of the season which is normally lower than the average due to people being on holiday.

It's also a pretty good indication that our support is increasing year on year which is great news. There will come a time where Roots Hall will be to small for home support alone

We thought that when we first went to Division 2 ......... not to worry, we soon came back down again .....

Yes I remember those days......... We've certainly grown our fan base over the last few years and I've got to say, far play to RM and PB. Year on year our league position has improved and the fans believe we're heading in the right direction

I think (or is it just a silly, mad hope) that perhaps this time we have the possibility of a new ground should we get anywhere near Division 2 again.

I notice that Bridge hasn't even made the subs bench in these selections. Is that because these new youngsters are better or he is still out of favour and will be going out on loan shortly

And here is the weather report for Saturday from the B.B.C.

Around 20 degrees Centigrade some sun and cloud. It was very hot last year in the game v Gillingham - so sun glasses (and sun hat and sun cream) may be required if you are going to be in the East Stand ..............

I fear Danny Graham will get a hat-full at this level ;

" TONY Mowbray hopes Rovers will show their true colours at Southend United in their League One opener on Saturday after rounding off pre-season with a 3-1 defeat at Carlisle United.Rovers were beaten by the League Two side at Brunton Park. Without a number of key players they were less than secure in defence, with Mowbray believing his side were ‘too open and got exposed’.
The head coach is hoping to welcome back defensive pair Charlie Mulgrew and Darragh Lenihan, as well as midfielder Ben Gladwin, to his squad for Saturday’s trip to Roots Hall.

And with their expected return, he wants his side to be at their best as they look to start their League One campaign in positive fashion.
“Not conceding goals was the platform to pick up results at the end of last season and defensively we need to be more solid, as we have been throughout pre-season,” Mowbray said.
“There were a few disruptions, a few square pegs in round holes, but hopefully by the weekend we will have a full complement to choose from and go and show our true colours at Southend. It’s a tough ask at Southend, a long journey, against a team with an experienced manager who I am sure will have them wound up and ready for the challenge.
“It’s the first real challenge for us and let’s see how we get on.
“We’ve seen how tough these games can be against teams in a league lower than us.
“Southend will be stronger than Carlisle and we have to make sure we get our game plan spot on, have our best players on the pitch and hopefully we will have enough to get a positive performance and a good result.”
Danny Graham was once again on the scoresheet at Carlisle, making it five goals in six friendlies.
“He seems to just turn up and score,” Mowbray said.
“It’s good for us to have a player like Danny Graham because even on days when he doesn’t feature too much in the build-up, he seems to be the man on the spot who sticks the ball in the net.

“We gave him another 70 minutes, he did miss a couple of sessions early in pre-season and we’re just conscious of not trying to drive him to 90 minutes yet. We will build to that.”

Didn't we whack his Coventry side 3-0? Or had he left by then? Either away he's more than aware of how difficult it is in league one. Not the league below, the same league as his own current team.
