After the great win at Daggers, it’s back to Roots Hall to try to back it up against AFC Fylde in the game rearranged to be 4 days earlier than originally planned due to our progression in the FA Trophy.

Fylde, now managed by former England striker Kevin Phillips, managed to break a 3 game losing streak on Saturday by beating fellow strugglers Wealdstone 2-0 with goals from an Ipswich loanee, Ashley Boatswain, on his debut and top scorer Nick Haughton.

For a team in the relegation zone and despite their run of defeats prior to last Saturday, their current form isn’t that bad.

We of course had a great win at the Daggers and it remains to be seen if Kev sticks with a swashbuckling 3 up front to try to turn around our disappointing home form. Collin looked in a bad way when he went off on Saturday so it remains to be seen if he’ll be fit to start.

It’s likely to be the smallest crowd of the season with Fylde being one of the smallest clubs in the National League and Tuesday nights in January for rearranged fixtures not drawing the biggest home gates either.

So who would you choose to start and what do you think the result will be?

Wasn’t the Fylde away game the one where our coach driver was arrested for flying a drone over the pitch at half time? It’s been a funny old season
Don't forgot the players missing the train connection leaving a few thousand fans twiddling their thumbs, only to be told they have to come back in a few Wednesdays time when the Southend team can maybe arrive on time.

Fylde have only managed to pick up 4 points on their travels this season. A win against Boston back in October, and a point against Oldham even further back in August.

Recent away trips against Solihull & Maidenhead has seen them ship 8 goals and they currently average 2 goals conceded per game across the season.

The bookies have got them at 9/2 for the win & 3/1 for the draw. Bookies are rarely wrong with those odds.

On paper, it’s a home banker. So of course, it’s the type of game we’ll probably come unstuck 😂 We need a fast start, just as we did against Daggers. An early goal and we’ll likely go and win by 2/3/4. If we let them sit behind the ball, it could be a very frustrating night.

Same as Saturday for me

Goalkeeper situation is obviously our only concern. Harness looks very shaky to me

I could see a slight shuffle in the midfield or back 3 to keep things fresh but aside from that, I hope we stick with the 3 up top
I hope the two saves harness made in front of our brilliant fans on Saturday May well have transformed his confidence level. Possibly the second was going wide but getting a hand to it at full stretch is one of those that makes you and the fans feel good. Hugely daunting playing in front of bigger crowds of not doing it regularly.
I'm definitely not as concerned about him as I was but still prefer collin.

It’ll be interesting to see if we bring in another keeper depending on Collin’s injury.

I said in the post-match thread that we won't play 3 up front in every game as we will get overrun in midfield at times. However, in games where we should dominate and dictate possession, we have to play it. There is absolutely no point playing an extra midfielder that is going to sit behind the ball with all the play in front of them. We need runners and movement off of the ball.

The only change that may happen is in defense. I know that sounds odd after getting a clean sheet but I felt Goodliffe brought much needed calmness and dominance at the heart of the 3 and allowed Taylor and Golding to spread better. We just looked bigger and stronger as a unit. I feel he'll be better in both boxes too. We've really struggled at home with set pieces and Kev will be aware of that. Therefore, Ralph to LWB at the expense of Bridge may be the only change. If it isn't, I'd still be happy nonetheless.

Reading @shrimperjon comments about Kev's thoughts really saddens me, as it did when listening to abuse aimed at him during the last home game. There is definitely a fear factor on the team playing at home and we need to do our best to make it a good place to play. We need that positive energy that we create at away games, generated at Roots Hall. Let's be United tomorrow. Utb!

I hope we pick a side to win the next match instead of a side to win the last match.

Wasn’t at Daggers but my understanding is that 3-4-3 was working really well until Daggers countered with a tactical change to give them an extra man in midfield after which Daggers started to get on top. Maher then countered by bringing on KAF for Kendall which restored our control.

Opposition will have watched the game and their takeaway is therefore likely to be that they need the extra man in midfield from the start. What worked first half at Daggers won’t necessarily work v Fylde, who’ll likely make the adjustment Daggers made second half.

I said exactly the same post-match regarding this match and them using Haughton in that pocket.

However, we are at home and Kev does need to start trusting his players to attack that final third. Our biggest problem has been having too many similar players playing (especially in midfield) and playing the easy ball, simply because there is an extra midfielder to the side of them to pass to. Whereas Saturday, an extra man up top forced us to play forward and look for that extra attacker. The offside goal came about because Morton was forced to look up and cross into the box as there wasn't that extra midfielder beside him to simply pass to. He had bodies in the box to aim at for once.

I do feel Kev has played slightly more reserved as he hasn't trusted the Cardwell replacements to do what Cardwell did, and that's understandable. He took the gamble on Saturday and it paid off. It won't always pay off and we do need to adapt to different oppositions, but against sides like Fylde, we have to impose ourselves. Starting with 3 defensive minded midfielders and playing side to side between themselves hasn't worked thus far.

Agreed. After Kev made the change and we went 2-0 up we managed the game well. Ok they had a couple of chances in added time, but otherwise we were still on top. We kept possession when we could but also had the option to play into the channel because Bonne both held it up and pressed and pushed them back so we were mainly playing in their half. Hopefully he recovers ok to play a similar role on Tuesday.
I said last week that 0-3 v Barnet was a fair reflection of the game and happy to say that likewise 2-0 to the Essex boys was the least we deserved this time.

Rain forecast this evening and then tomorrow from 03:00-18:00, Not heavy , according to the met office, but it could make the surface a tad tricky, plus wind gusting up to MPH ......

Think the side pretty much picks itself after Daggers.

Collin
Taylor, Golding, Ralph
GSM, Coker, Morton, Bridge
Kendall, Bonne, Walker
Only question mark is Collin, but Harness did pretty well so not a problem if he needs to stand in.
