Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 5-0 Solihull Moors

well Maher was Captain Crab as @Hooly used to call him ! 😂
Well @Leeboy that was pretty accurate in his early days as he made Right Angle Ray (Wilkins) seem quite progressive at times!!! 😇

In my defence (or not) that was a lot nicer name than I called Graeme Jones regularly & Steve Mildenhall. The later told me to f'off & watch another team when I politely (yea right) pointed out his error of throwing the ball into the back of Anthony Grant who was heading upfield & then having an almighty rant at him, as he did at most people when he made a mistake. 😤😤

Compare that to the current team & the camaraderie everyone is talking about. When Brooklyn pushed that ball past Hayes who had to scramble to clear it not one player had a go at him or even gave him a look from what I could see from the SU, they simply got on with it.

A combination of long Covid, unemployment and becoming a daddy for the first time meant I missed the whole of last season.

On Saturday I was back. To be honest, I was a bit nervous. Having been a STH for the best part of 20 years, I felt the chain had been broken, and because I hate listening on the radio - Nick Alliker panics whenever the ball enters our own half - I relied on Soccer Saturday and my dad, who does listen to the commentary.

I was still in the loop thanks to BT Sport and the various live streams available so I knew our players and our style of play - 20 passes, give it to Bridge, wiggle left, wiggle right, disappointing cross, here’s Powell, over the bar, etc - but watching all the action live is a whole new thing.

Had RH changed that much? Would the Sarf Upper really smell of fox poo? I approached the ground. Yay, the QR code thing worked! I was met by Faithless, Zombie Nation, Avicci and the eerie Bolero thing. Looking back the nervousness was a bit silly as my old seat was available and it was like I’d never been away…

I was looking forward to seeing Kanu, albeit with a bit of trepidation as I’ve looked forward to seeing new players many times in the past, only to be disappointed.

Not this time though. What a player and how on earth have we managed to get him on loan - there must have been other clubs higher up keen to take him on.

We’ve had to rely on Cardwell too often and Saturday showed that a potent partner for him will add an extra dimension. I watched the Yeovil game and despite our dominance I couldn’t see us scoring.

I think we should keep our feet on the ground though as I’ve got a feeling Ebbsfleet will be targeting Kanu quite aggressively.

It was a nice feeling walking out of the ground with a smile on my face for a change. Must come again some time…

I noticed in the South Upper alot of different faces and that includes young families. What a game for them to attend.

We have known for a long time that something special is happening at Roots Hall but what is amazing is with the positivity in the air, it feels like the feel good factor with regards to the club around town is back and posts by Largs confirm that.

Bring on Tuesday.

Exactly this. I'm in the West Stand, and speaking to the people around me, they agree too that the atmosphere even before kick off was positive. There was certainly something in the air that made the whole place even better than usual.

For NL players on their way up the leagues, RH must be a very intimidating place with a big crowd. 6.3k in the fifth tier of English football. Phenomenal.

in fairness Graeme Jones deserved it 😂

Hes third/fourth choice for Addicks, which means either the two/three above are exceptional, or Charlton dont feel hes good enough and needs match play

Though my Charlton friend , believes he should be in first team now and we have got a great player
On match of the day they said he was 8th choice !🥴🥴🥴🥴

May be an image of 1 person, playing football, playing American football and text that says SUFC_History @SUFC_History who at 18 Congratulations to @danielkanu years and 341 days becomes the youngest #Southend United player ever to score a first team hat-trick. He beats the record held by Chris Guthrie who was 19 years 140 days old when scoring three against Port Vale in April 1973. S KANU 19 OUT TED

I am sure someone commented that their goalkeeper could have done better with Husin's shot? Although I've trawled through this thread, I can't find the reference. Anyway, I didn't think much about it at the time, unti I saw Solihull Moors 'rewind' highlights (youtube) today. from the North End you see clearly that, apart from dipping and being hit with force, it also had a vicious swerve............virtually unstoppable?

And the GK was massively unsighted through the mass of players in front of him. By the time he saw it, it was too late.
