Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 5-0 Solihull Moors

Daniel Kanu made it a home debut to remember with his four goals inspiring Southend United to a 5-0 win over high-flying Solihull Moors.
The Charlton Athletic loanee opened his Blues account after just 15 minutes when he was on hand to tap home into an unguarded net after Ollie Kensdale had headed the ball back across goal.
Then on the stroke of half-time a Solihull attempt to play out from the back resulted in goalkeeper Tommy Simkin gifting the ball to the 18-year-old who gleefully converted into the top corner.
In the second period there were three goals in the space of five minutes with a Noor Husin volley being followed up by a further two goals from Kanu.
Kevin Maher made two changes from last Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Yeovil Town with Husin returning from international duty in place of Dan Mooney, and Kanu coming in for Jack Wood to make his first start.
Kick-off
The visitors did threaten early on with a Richard Stearman header forcing Nick Hayes into a save down low.
However, it was Blues who struck first with Kanu introducing himself to the Roots Hall faithful with a goal.

A deep Harry Taylor cross was headed back across goal by Kensdale where it fell to the feet of Kanu who tapped home from a couple of yards out.
Brooklyn Kabongolo and Oli Coker both went close to scoring before Kanu doubled his and Southend’s tally for the afternoon just before the interval.
Teenage goalkeeper Simkin played the ball straight to Kanu in the Moors’ penalty area who struck brilliantly, lashing home into the top corner.
HALF-TIME: Southend United 2-0 Solihull Moors
Kabongolo, like Kanu, was making his home debut and he too almost marked it with a goal just prior to the hour mark.
An out swinging Jack Bridge corner picked out the Frenchman whose towering header had to be turned behind by Simkin.
Two minutes later Kabongolo would again be denied by Simkin with a carbon copy of his first attempt.
However, Blues weren’t be denied of a third with Husin adding some breathing space after 61 minutes.
A Bridge corner was only cleared as far as the Afghanistan international who chested the ball down and unleashed a dipping volley that flew past Simkin and in for his third goal of the campaign.

This resulted in a flurry of goals with three in the space of five minutes with Blues picking apart a Solihull side that came into the game boasting the league’s best defensive record.
Three minutes after Husin’s strike Kanu completed his hat-trick.
Bridge toyed with Kade Craig before dinking in a cross that Kanu headed in from close range.
Things got even better for the teenager who scored himself a fourth goal two minutes later, firing a right-wing cross past Simkin to make it 5-0.

Blues had a couple of half-chances in the closing stages but couldn't add to their tally.

After an incredible 5-0 defeat of Solihull Moors on Saturday afternoon, Kevin Maher labelled his players “outstanding”.
He said: “We started on the front foot and kept knocking at the door. We got the goal we wanted and everything came off for us, but the lads deserved that for their work-rate and how they went about their business.
“Solihull are up there for a reason and it’s no accident this far into the season that they are where they are in the league. From our point of view, we did everything we spoke about wanting to do, and to add the goals we got as well was a real positive.”
Daniel Kanu scored an amazing four goals on his home debut for Blues, and Maher wasn’t surprised with the striker’s exploits. “Daniel’s a goalscorer so he knows where to be on the pitch – no matter what age you are, goalscorers are goalscorers.”

Three of Kanu’s quartet came from crosses, with the Head Coach suggesting that having another body up there to take defenders’ attentions helped.
“Last week [against Yeovil] we put loads of crosses in but sometimes when it’s just Cards they double up on him. I think having another body in there who wants to get on the end of things frees it up.
“Teams are watching Cards so it gives someone else a chance, and it’s no coincidence that when we finally get a goalscorer in the door, we get a result like this.”
Brooklyn Kabongolo came on in the first 15 minutes after an injury to Jason Demetriou and put in an assured display, almost getting on the scoresheet himself a couple of times.
On the French defender, Maher added: “It was a little bit of an unknown because he hasn’t got many minutes but I thought he did brilliantly.
“He’s had a couple of headers from set-pieces but I thought he looked composed on the ball and I’m delighted for him. I think JD just rolled his ankle so we’ll see how that is but hopefully it settles down okay.”

On Tuesday Blues are back at Roots Hall, against Ebbsfleet United. The gaffer concluded: “We don’t expect the get the same result but we’ve got to go and hit the same performance levels and play with energy and intensity again.”

Also noticed all the Stewards with brand new Hi Viz with Southend Logo's on. Money being spent from somewhere

Jeez. These lads just keep doing the business don’t they. I was genuinely worried before the game. At the start I was really concerned we were missing Cav Miley in the middle. No such concerns at the end. Everyone did their bit .. Noor was superb, well deserved goal. Kanu is obviously a cut above this level. Wes I thought had an excellent game and Bridge looked a threat every time he got the ball.

The defence I thought were solid .. Kabongolo .. wow he stepped up to the plate, some lovely touches and passes and a real goal threat.

Couldn’t be prouder basically. This is a special group of players and a special management team.

A little stat.

We've not got 5 at home in the league for sixteen years since QPR. We have not had a player get four since 1985.
Was that Richard Cadette v Northampton in the cup? Ive not looked it up so relying on memory, which is dangerous!
