Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 4-0 Ebbsfleet

A must win game against the worst side in the league.
Good to see some goals, but we have to take this result and build on it against a Braintree team who had a good win themselves today.

Lots of people said these two games, today and Braintree were both must wins - they are, and anything but a win on Monday would be a disappointment.

Think the front 2 were the reason we played so well with the energy and pressing and the quality . Once they went off we looked very average . Golding unreal , Kendall brilliant . Miley back to his best . Husin good, Bridge still didn’t look great imo. Pepple unreal

North bank “family stand” was a disaster.. communication was left too late about the move, the club charging £8 - £10 to change seats is criminal and the fact everyone was sat down is absolutely nothing what the north bank is about and was clearly day trippers not understanding the intention of that being the atmosphere stand.

It’s clear the north bank will never be what we want it to be without a clear understanding everyone in the north will be standing and there to create an atmosphere.

Either we have fans in the whole north bank with safe standing or we stay in the west stand.. it all needs to be done properly and today was not close to being done properly.

Plenty of people in the match thread around 14:00, sporting a lovely shade of egg on their faces right now. Y’all know who you are 😂😂😂

I was expecting more from Ebbsfleet but they were terrible. The worst we’ve seen at RH all season. Probably the worst since Dover a few years ago tbh.

That being said we did what we needed to do. Pep will take the plaudits but I thought Miley was top drawer & Kendall ran himself into the ground. Same as in York, he should have scored, but hopefully that’ll come.

If we’d scored 7/8 today, it wouldn’t have been unjust.

Weird atmosphere in the ground today though. Not a fan of W block and the NB being split.
Get over yourself, it was Ebbsfleet who are shipping goals for fun!? When we start getting consistency and doing that to the top 10 teams in the league, then maybe we won`t need to post about the dire football that has been served up? One swallow doesn`t make a summer?

To all those that were banging on about us losing in the Pre Match Thread - I hope you now feel very stupid for pre-empting in that way.

They say you can only beat what is put in front of you, well, that is what we did, 4-0. I'll waffle some more later on about some of our players, but for tonight I'll just enjoy a well deserved win from the lads with Bim getting better every game and Charley Kendall and Golding looking real prospects.

We were good. Ebbsfleet were woeful, really, really bad. This was more like the us of old, bossing the midfield, looking dangerous down the flanks and taking our chances in front of goal. Easier to do against such poor opposition, but hopefully this can be the kind of confidence boost which is much needed.

Collin 6 Didn’t have much to do but his distribution under pressure almost got us in trouble.
Taylor 7 Not particularly tested but did his job well.
Golding 8 A massive upgrade on Crowther, composed and handled everything that came his way.
Ralph 7 Solid defensively and did everything he had to.
GSM 7 Got a bit carried away trying to get forward at times, but took his goal well.
Miley 8 Ebbsfleet couldn’t get past him. Looked how he did when at his best.
Husin 7 Bossed things in midfield well.
Coker 8 Lively and great movement, very tidy on the ball.
Bridge 7.5 More like the Bridge of old, took his man on and made some good deliveries.
Kendall 8 Only let down by his finishing, could’ve had one or two and looked a livewire who connected very well with Bim.
Pepple 9 Took his chances very well and unfortunate not to have got a hat-trick.

Subs
Walker 6 Wasn’t involved much against their big lumps.
Bonne 6 He’s a good player, just doesn’t look like a centre forward.
Gubbins 6 Really doesn’t convince me, but a few wayward pases and headers.
KAF 7 Looked energetic against tired legs.
Morton - Few minutes for a run out.

Kendall and Bim had real potential to build up a partnership and worked quite well together, will be looking forward to seeing more of that. Otherwise, a big positive all-round, and hopefully tees us up nicely for the next two which should be winnable. Full credit to Kev as well, who got it spot on with his team selection.

Why were they charging?
That’s madness…

Precisely why we went for an experienced midfield who could hold & keep possession, which in turn allowed our pacy strikers to push from the front line.

Oh I don’t disagree the football has been dire (at times) this season. But no football had been played at 14:05, which is the point I was making with that harmless and jovial dig. You can’t right us off based on a starting XI. We’re too much of a Jekyll and Hyde club for that.

I did look at the line up and think “Christ why ..” but then did also think experience might not be a bad thing vs the bottom team in a game we needed to win. As it happened both Bridge and Husin seemed to raise their game so maybe Kev said to them “this is your chance to prove to people why I keep ****ing picking you”

So much better. Cav back to his best. Noor not quite at his best but a massive improvement after his rest. I told you Golding was good. He's told those at the club he used to play in midfield, so he's used to running out with the ball. Gus was much better today. Kendall was a breath of fresh air. Hard working, always closing down, and an excellent partner for Bim. Cokes, keeping up his consistency. Bim Pepple, feed him and he will score.

The positives today.

Kendall was brilliant. Aggressive direct and formed a good partnership with Pepple who's stock is improving week by week. Sign him up.

Golding looked very good. Big, strong, composed, and able to bring the ball out of defence and pass it.

Husin actually looked more like his old self. Driving at defenders and moving the ball far quicker.

Bridge also had a good game.

8400+ is a fantastic attendance, more so when you consider that 8200+ was just home fans. Get the club at the top end and redveloped roots Hall and we can go places.

The bad.

The north bank experiment killed some of the atmosphere but enjoyed the banter. £6 to move was a complete **** take. The gate being shut and not allowing west standers in to the burger bar and north must have killed their takings tbh.

Ebbsfleet were the poorest side we have faced in this league and 4-0 could and should have been 5,6,7-0, but for some excellent saves.

Braintree had a good win today and will want to back that up with a result on new year's day.

Play the same team and have a proper go, infront of probably 2000+ Shrimpers

So no doubt a lot of people will be ecstatic Maher led us to a 4-0 win.
Club legend who proved his worth, literally keeping us alive last year in the worst of circumstances. Why any Southend United fan would not be ecstatic is beyond me.

Great to see the new signings settling in. Just the injection the club needs and a similar shot in the arm for confidence. Interesting to hear GSM calling it out after the game too.

Hopefully a springboard to a better second half of the season and some quality to replace those we’ve lost.

Thought we played well against a woeful Ebbsfleet side, probably the worst team I’ve seen us play in many years.

Kendall looks excellent and exactly what we need up front, lots of pace and runs for every ball. Golding was also very good and composed at the back. I was one of the ones to criticise the team selection with Miley and Husin included, but Miley actually played really well (doesn’t change the fact I thought that Morton didn’t deserve to be dropped.)

Atmosphere was very poor today given the 8.5k crowd… likely because we were playing a team of statues, which didn’t make for the most entertaining game ever, but nice to see four goals that could have easily been a couple more.

Maher looks very under pressure in the dugout and had a fit after the second goal, in retort to some of the fans moaning about a backwards pass a minute or so before… he lost it quite badly, and really needs to chill out!

We were much braver today and weren’t afraid to run at Ebbsfleet, don’t get me wrong - they were the worst side I’ve seen at the Hall this year, but I thought we did a lot of things right. Husin is by far the most frustrating player as he arguably has the most ability across our team but will rarely use it, he drove at everyone today and was really positive when on the ball and always looked to go forward. Bridgey looked sharp and again was confident to run at everyone and Miley and Coker played well too. Kendall will do wonders for us and his pace is exactly what we’ve been calling out for. Pepple does exactly what he does, can make a goal all by himself. Gus with another goal and Golding looked real solid, reminded me of Lopata.

Just a confident performance against a poor side, would love us to replicate it week in week out against better opposition.

I’m ecstatic, I always am when we win. I also want Kev to succeed. But it’s the pleasure some seem to derive from critics being ‘proved wrong’ which irks me. Kev isn’t exempt from criticism.
