Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-2 Bristol City

Not enough superlatives for the performance last night, brought that lovely warm, winning feeling back to the fans that were there - and not just because of the way we were crammed into that awful East stand which was every bit as bad as I remembered. This was made even worse by seeing some allowed into South upper, my dad being refused the chance to move, as at 6'3" he couldn't get his legs in behind the seat, and having specificially asked for a seat with leg room after a recent knee op (we were mid row) he and my mum left at half time. I think there may be a stroppy letter winging its way to the club this morning.

Now, back to the performance. Had seen Coughlan during preseason and been impressed but he was absolutely phenomenal last night until his legs went, and I honestly don't think he expected to be playing a full 90 let alone extra time! The guys sitting behind us were writing Morris off before the match even started which had us simmering in indignation, and I think he had a good enough game to make them change their opinions - certainly sounded that way! Sturrock played brilliantly and Corr was brilliant both in attack AND defence when he came on, Paterson has to learn to feed off both of them though, standing behind Corr is hardly going to get him the knock downs which Corr is so good at providing. Prosser and Barker were awesome, bloody ref not stopping play when Barker got his eye cut open and yet being taken in (unlike his team mates) when one of the Brizzle players went down. Anthony Grant. Just amazing last night, left Easton to do the dirty work and concentrated on what he's good at - where did he learn to shoot from distance like that?!

Morris - 7, good enough performance against strong opposition, goals were a disappointment but not really much he could do against the power of the first
Simpson - 8, reminded me a lot of Juppy, might have been a stand in in that position, but perfectly acceptable replacement for Clohessy
Coughlan - 9, commanded and commanding, the old war horse had a stonking game, won 100% of the headers, even when stumbling!
Prosser - 9, also played quite fantastically. Took over Coughlan's role when his legs were too tired, got in some very important tackles and challenges, a very welcome addition and how wonderful it is to have such a choice of centre backs!
Barker - 8.5, another strong performance from the short term loanee, sign him up! Best left back I've seen in our colours at the Hall for years
Zabooub - 6, weakest player on the night, but probably down to fitness and still getting to know each other
Easton - 8, very Maheresque but with the ability to play a much more forward pass. Some cracking challenges and tackles
Grant - 10, not often I give a 10 but he was just amazing. Fantastic shooting, fantastic "narcolepsy", fantastic passing and fantastic energy
Soares - 7, still got some work to do, and didn't like the way both him and Zabooub often ended up on the same wing, forcing Easton wide
Sturrock - 8.5, took inspiration from his performance on Saturday, held the ball up well and wasn't at all intimidated by taking on 2 or 3 at the same time
Paterson - 8, was out on his feet at the end, did well, just needs to develop some understanding

Subs:
Corr for Zabooub - 8.5, awesome at both ends of the field. He blocked at least 4 attempts on goal in our box, such an intelligent player too
Hall for Sturrock - 7.5, I really liked Hall and Soares operating down both wings against Derby and he showed when he came on that he has the ability to work the ball and cross it from the wing
Spencer for Soares - 8, love him! Practically his first touch was the sublime cross (very similar to Sturrock's against West Ham) for Corr's goal, such energy and playing up top with Corr and Paterson made our front line a real threat!

Ref - 7, on the whole didn't get too much wrong, few dodgy moments (mainly hand balls being missed, but Sturrock did quite a few that were also missed!) and a tendency to award throw ins to Brizzle if there was any doubt, but on the whole pretty decent.

Crowd - 9, really hard to get any atmosphere going, but eventually got behind the lads, think it was a majorly wrong decision to restrict us to the East. Wouldn't have been too difficult to open the South would it?

Zaboub was the only real disappointment last night; perhaps a bad day at the office, perhaps he's taking longer than others to settle in (I believe he has language problems?),

I think he speaks good English. The thing with Zabooub though, and where we may need to be patient with him, is that he hasn't played football at any sort of level in a year. It's got to take him a certain amount of time to get back up to speed.

What can I say people.... Fantastic game!
Thoroughly enjoyed myself last night, and def feeling effects today....
I was goin to post ratings for players, but I will leave that to you guys. Will make special mention to Coughlin who I thought if it wasn't for a lack of pace (understandable at his age), was immense..won every header at the back! Spencer looks a really neat and tidy player with some very good feet and could be a cult hero in my eyes. Also Corr who come on later in the game, looked like an ideal target man and he proved that, every ball which came to his head, he flicked on or held up to great effect.
All in all tho, a really great performance from the whole team and the East stand (amazing atmosphere!)...can't wait to see what rest of season brings.

It was probably best I didn't give my ratings last night as I was absolutely elated and, come 11pm, had had more than my fair share of alcohol which I am struggling with this morning.

I said in the Twitter feed that it was as good a performance as I've seen from Southend, and that's something I stand by today. The effort, commitment and desire shown just last night eclipsed the sum of that shown last season. There was no shirking of responsibility, no half-hearted challenges and nobody going through the motions. Every player used wanted to be there and they wanted to win, which is more than can be said for at least eight of the Brizzle squad... Coppell was quite rightly furious.

As for the team itself, we looked incredibly fluid last night as soon as they settled down from an early shock. With Sturrock dropping deep and Paterson and Soares running through, the Brizzle defence struggled, and this is something Luggy capitalised on later, but I'll get to that in a second. At times, we lacked a little in the centre of the park, probably due to the absence of Simpson in the centre and Zaaboub's poor possessional play, but we knocked the ball around well for large parts of the game.

Defensively, we were solid as a rock. Coughlan led by example, which helped my MotM; Luke Prosser, no end. Prosser epitomised the performance last night... he put his head where others wouldn't put their enemies to get the ball clear, covered his ground perfectly and did all in his power to clear his, and others', lines. Barker showed why we simply have to bring him in permanently and Morris looked perfectly capable, left with no chance for the first and the second about the only bright piece of play Brizzle produced.

Make no mistake about this, though... Luggy's substitutions changed the game in our favour. Sturrock ran his heart out but lacked the aerial presence of Corr, who was subsequently brought on. He dropped deeper than he did at the weekend intentionally to drop his flick ons into the paths of Hall/Paterson/Soares/Spencer with aplomb. He pulled the CB out of positional continuously, and it opened up acres of space for those to run onto. Spencer came on, turned the full-back inside out with his first touch and delivered a peach of a cross that Corr simply prodded home with ease.

I spent most of the game trying to pin down our formation and, by the looks of things, so did Coppell and the Brizzle squad. It's something of an interchangeable 4-5-1 4-4-2 that finds its strength in its fluidity and it appears to be working a treat. Last season our squad struggled with anything other than a standard 4-4-2, much like England, but Sturrock has to take credit for getting the player settled into this tactic.

Onto the ratings:

Morris - 7/10 - Covered his box well and collected what he could. No chance for the free kick.
Simpson - 6.5/10 - Adomah troubled him and, defensively, he spent spells all at sea. That said, his strengths as a midfielder allowed him to get the ball away quickly and, usually, to one of our own.
Coughlan - 8/10 - All round class. Positional sense was supreme, he assisted Prosser all night and was combatant through out. Might get done for pace but, like Prior, his reading of the game is such that he makes up for it.
Prosser - 8.5/10 - Jeez, if Vale have let this one go willingly then we'll be happy to oblige. Not enough superlatives for him last night. Solid.
Barker - 7.5/10 - Another classy performance. Not in Reid's plans, seems to be enjoying it here, Sign him up. Bye Johnny.
Easton - 7 - My only criticism is he was a passenger at times, much like Maher, but can certainly pass the ball, much like Maher. Tackled hard to win the ball back.
Grant - 8.5 - Only just edged out by Prosser for MotM. Extraordinary engine and drove the team forward. Didn't stop running.
Soares - 7 - Not quite sure about him yet. Set piece delivery is very intermittent and he's prone to running into a blind alley like JCR... Offered us an outlet though.
Zaaboub - 6 - The worst of a very good bunch, I'm afraid. Clearly not fit yet and gave the ball away a lot.
Paterson - 8 - Excellent performance. Must start Saturday. Showed tremendous ability to lay the ball off (one particular cross he chested down for Corr in the first half was exquisite) and a good leap for the winner.
Sturrock - 7.5 - Not the most technically gifted player, no, but he knows the system we're playing inside out, has all the touches to bring others into play and was a constant thorn in Fontaine's side, winning free kicks continuously.

Subs:

Corr - 8 - Really like him. Wins the ball brilliantly in the air and lays it off simply.
Hall - 7.5 - The better version of Soares last night. Has pace to burn and got past his man a few times... A quite brilliant cross for our winner that, had it have been in the Premier League, would have had Shearer salivating on MotD.
Spencer - 7.5 - Like Hall, he improved the side with his more direct style and weaved around defenders.

Sturrock/Widdrington - 9 - Quite how they have the side playing that quality of football, baring in mind they didn't know eachother 3 weeks ago, is astounding.

I also liked the look of Sturrock (jr) In my recollection Ian Benjamin didn't score that many goals (the bury one more than made up for it) but was a very good target/back to goal man, who held up play and played others in. He worked in Webby's system well. I feel Sturrock jr could fill the same sort of role, he obviously knows it well and what his Dad wants. He wont score loads of goals, but in the right system, could bring others into play.
Didn't I read somewhere that Paul Sturrock's Plymouth top goalscorer when they won league one was a centre back? So do you really need
a 20 goals + a season man, just to have him sniffed by a chamionship/league one club. Then we sell him and have to re-shuffle.

Have to echo those others who said last nights performance was immense.

Like many others, the standout performance for me was Grant, his work rate was astounding last night. He is playing with such freedom now, and that in my opinion is down to the steadying influence of Easton beside him. If we can get through the August window without losing him to a Championship side, we are in for a treat this Autumn, we really are.

First time I have seen Coughlan tonight. As the only player in the squad older than me I have to big him up(!), but he really did remind me of Rob Newman - even down to the way he got caught on the half way line with the ball caught between his feet. His influence out there was exactly what the tie needed last night, all the more so when we went behind at two very difficult points in the game. Like Easton bringing the best out of Grant, I think Coughlan gave Prosser the confidence to get stuck in and really shine next to him, which he did with some great interventions and some battering ram headers as the night wore on.

Simpson put in a very solid performance at right back, though was caught out of position a few times, perhaps to be understood if he was in an unfamiliar role. We probably won't get found out like that quite so much week in week out in League 2, but Brizzle's second goal came about through that.

Barker, sign him. Simple as. Superb commitment; took a nasty knock on the head and was itching to get out again. Feel so sorry for Jonny Herd, but can't get around the fact that Barker is a different class. Slight concern about his pace, especially in a back four with Coughlan, but he really is a solid player.

The one area last night where there is still places up for grabs is on the wings. Zaboub was the only real disappointment last night; perhaps a bad day at the office, perhaps he's taking longer than others to settle in (I believe he has language problems?), but he didn't seem to click with his team mates tonight, who to be fair were sympathetic to it and offered encouragement - a great sign for general team spirit. Screech put in a surprisingly good performance out wide; still has a tendency to blow hot and cold but I am sure last night's cross for Corr won't be the last flash of brilliance we'll see from him this season. Very interested in seeing more of what a fit Ryan Hall will offer. He made some great runs and won us free kicks in good positions, great cross for the winner too. Soares looked like a player playing well within himself last night - nothing special from him but he knew he wasn't having a blinder and generally played some good, sensible football.

Paterson and Sturrock worked well up front. Both worked pretty hard, with some very sensible posession-oriented football, bringing team mates into play very nicely (a great combination between Sturrock winning, holding up then chipping it up to Patterson who chested it into Soares path for a snap shot was a good illustration of this). Corr added some great hunger to the game when he came on and deserved his goal for some superb knock-downs, headers and hold-up play - saw the positive aspects of comparisons with Crouch tonight.

Morris clearly isn't as commanding as Mildy, something he must work on with the high, swirling balls aimed at bruising centre forwards he will undoubtedly have to deal with this season, but was tidy enough for the most part. Maybe at fault on the free kick, simply couldn't tell very well from East Red.

Overall, the atmosphere tonight was better and better as the team got better and better during the game. You could see them growing in self belief and it was a privilege to watch. The atmosphere was entirely about the team lifting the crowd last night. Team spirit and work rate was immense and I am now quite excited about the season. What Sturrock and Widdrington have achieved in 1 month is nothing short of a miracle. We're a long way from safe, but then I am also a long way from the sense of foreboding I had about this season as recently as 2 weeks ago.

UTB!

One last thing - on last nights evidence, this is going to be a very long hard season for Brizzle fans. They never got going despite an excellent start and to have shipped 6 goals in two games against two clubs who, putting it mildly, never really set League 1 alight last season, you have to worry for them.

Listening in on Blues Player, it hardly sounded like nearly 3000 at the start ...........................but by the end you could have believed that there were 9000 there! Interesting to note that we were one of, I think, ten League Two sides that put out higher league opposition..........the majority of those being Championship sides.

ESB, we started with a standard 4-4-2, then changed to 4-2-3-1, and then back to 4-4-2. Good to see.

i was right behind the goal for the 1st , it went in at chest height ,morris somehow collapsed under it, very poor keeping, apart from that he did ok from where i was..........the only negative on a very good performance and great confidence boosting win

what happened was in the wall was an unmarked City player, Morris went slightly left to antincipate the curler and then could not reajust as their player blasted it through the wall where the city player had been. Apart from this I was quite impressed with him.
As all have said last night was as good a team performance as I can remember. We mix it up well, long ball at times, knock it around when possible. Sturrock and Coughlan were immense.
I thought in contradiction to most that Soares look to have something about him and so did Hall. The question is can they take their game to the next level from where they have been playing. I think Sturrock's coaching team team may just be able to help them do this.

Not much to add to a wonderful squad performance. Not going to tread on Tillys grave but I think last night showed Ron was right to change things. For Sturrock and Widdy to get what is basically a bunch of journeymen and rejects to play like that is sensational management. They are visibly pumped up, playing with freedom and a smile on their face. For those who thought we would be long ball, we played some superb passing football la\st night, one touch stuff, with some great crosses into the box. Players were interchanging, covering for each other, was a joy to watch.
Keeper was faultless, back 4 superbly led by the old man Coughlan who was imperious, midfield hard working, epitomised by Eastons inch perfect crunching tackle in extra time and all 4 strikers were excellent. Blair is proving the doubters wrong with his workrate and skill on the ball, both Corr and Pato were outstanding as targetmen and linking the play, and how can you not love Screech, so enthusiastic and played a peach of a cross for Corr. Hall also showed glimpses of another potential gem.
We will be very hard to beat, Luggy has serious selection problems now, the tactics changed to suit the flow of the game, players looked comfortable with both 4-4-2 and 4-3-3. I would still like to see another striker in but feeling very optimistic about the season ahead. Just hope we can get some of these players signed on longer deals if they continue to play like they are.

ESB, we started with a standard 4-4-2, then changed to 4-2-3-1, and then back to 4-4-2. Good to see.

I think it's more of an interchangeable front line, with what started out as a 4-4-2 (Zaaboub/Soares wingers, Pato/Sturrock up front) quickly became more of Sturrock as a deep-lying forward looking to play in Paterson and Soares behind him, with Zaaboub having something of a free-role.

This changed when Corr, Spencer and Hall came on and it reverted back to a 4-4-2, but there were phases of play when Paterson played wide left to feed off Corr's flick ons and cut inside, Spencer playing directly off Corr and Hall occupying the right wing. Corr dropping deeper and flicking the ball past Fontaine caused them no end of trouble.

Excellent performance from Southend and one of the best games I've seen at Roots Hall for a long time. Thought Bristol City started well and could have been 2 or 3-0 up but then Sturrock changed to 4-3-3 and we then started to take control of the game. Perhaps Morris could have done better with the first goal but it was travelling very fast but good penalty by Paterson afterwards after Grant was brought down. Bristol City's second goal was against the run of play as we had looked much more likely to score leading up to that, but Sturrock's substitutions all worked brilliantly and it was a superb cross from Spencer to set up Corr. Bristol City then started extra time well and their number 16, John Akinde, caused us all sorts of problems but we came back into it and it was a great cross from Hall and finish from Paterson to get the winner.

Might as well do my ratings to help with the Pringello Index:

Morris - 7: perhaps could have done better with the first goal but apart from that gave an assured peformance

Simpson - 7: looked comfortable at RB but was outmuscled by Adomah for City's second goal
Coughlan - 7: good performance, won everything in the air
Prosser - 8: much better than I thought he'd be, made a few great tackles and blocks though his distribution could be better
Barker - 7: hopefully we can get him for longer as he's clearly too good for League Two

Soares - 7: still not fully convinced, though his crossing is decent and he had one good shot saved
Grant - 9: simply brilliant, incredible work ethic and tracked back even late in the game. Has the license to go forward now he has Easton behind him and could have scored but for two great saves by Gerken. Must have won about 5 or 6 free kicks
Easton - 7: didn't stand out, but did his job well and kept the ball
Zaaboub - 6: disappointing, gave the ball away a few times and tried a few flicks but his teammates weren't on the same wavelength

Sturrock - 7: pleasantly surprised, his hold-up play is good but technically not the best
Paterson - 9: hopefully he starts on saturday, took both goals very well and went close with a free kick

Subs:

Corr - 8: his general play is excellent, has a good touch and brings others into play well. Good header for the goal and looks like a decent signing
Hall - 7: perfect cross for Paterson's header and isn't afraid to slide in for a tackle
Spencer - 7: looked dangerous when he came on, almost scored and provided a superb delivery for Corr's header

Watching the first goal on tv, we need to organize our walls better especially as we've been giving a lot of free kicks away around the box. The shot went through a gap between the end of the wall and a couple of players so the keeper was unsighted. 2nd half same happened but the shot went straight through the wall mid height as a player turned his back and missed by a fraction. On target and keeper has no chance. Other than that back 5 very good.

Excellent performance, full of character.

Let's not get too carried away though... however, it stretches the unbeaten run since Dartford.

My comments

Morris 6 - First goal appeared to go through his hands. No chance with second. Safe hands, but Flahavan-esque at box domination., i.e. none. Not sure Evans is any better so that area may be an issue this season.

Simpson 7 - He looks so good on the ball. Stood in well out of position. I know he didn't do much apparently on Saturday but to be honest I think his vision is so far beyond his team mates. They may grasp it eventually but mark my words, this bloke is a diamond.

Barker 7 - Solid and please get him for the season. I believe Herds days are numbered anyway. Johnny is one of only 5 players we had from last year, so who does Sturrock bring in as moreorless his first signing? A left back. Gilbert then gets injured so who do we bring in? A left back. When the squad have all registered and are available I doubt Herd will get on the bench.

Prosser 8.5 -MOM - Very impressed tonight. Maybe short on pace but commanding in the air.

Coughlan 7 - Solid but prefer Philips. He'll be good backup though.

Soares 7 - Good delivery at set pieces and unlucky not to score in second half but Hall is a more dangerous option IMHO.

Easton 6.5 - A bit subdued tonight I thought... had little room in the middle.

Grant 7.5 - Am I the only one who thought he did ok as opposed to brilliantly? He ran his socks off but so did everybody to be honest. He played well but also got booked and lost possession a few times. I think we all desperately want him to be good as he is the most senior pro left from the Tilly era.

Zaaboub 5.5 - Tried lots, little came off. In the end I was just wanting him to keep it simple. Improved fitness and understanding may help that.

Paterson 7.5 - Did pretty wel tonight and scored 2... that's what it's all about.

Sturrock 7.5 - A pleasant surprise to be fair. I was prepared to have an open mind but you've got to have doubts when the only clubs that sign you are managed by his Dad. But he did well tonight.

Subs -

Corr 8 - This lad is clever and if we can get a decent partner for him that can read his intelligent knock ons then we'll get lots of goals. I'm not sure we've got anyone that fits the bill as yet. Sadly his style of play means that if people don't read his lay offs it'll look like he is playing rubbish when in fact he isn't.

Hall 8 - Fantastic anticipation for the 3rd goal. He was in motion whilst the ball was in the air prior to the knock on for him. That sort of gambling will enable him to be a really good player. Scannell would never have done that.

Spencer 7 - Great cross for Corrs equaliser, however still has the ability to look awesome one second and awful the next.

Have added the ratings for this index thing pringlejon is doing

Right lets help out the pringello index.

Morris 7 - Another good performance from him last night. Before West Ham I would have gone with Evans for No.1 by reputation, but after the 3 games I've seen, Morris looks capable.

Simpson 6.5 - Can't say I agree with people on Simpson being good at RB, was caught out far too many times and feel he only looked better there to his natural position because he is getting his match fitness up now.
Coughlan 8 - Very strong defending, won a lot in the air.
Prosser 7.5 - Had a very solid performance and has like Coughlan won everything in the air!
Barker 7.5 - This guy is good, it's a shame we only have him on loan really.

Soares 6.5 - Was very hit and miss with his delivery in to the box, and doesn't show a lot of confidence at running at players.
Easton 6.5 - Started slowely, passes went astray, caught on the ball, but did get in to the game. More time with the players and he will know when and where to pass the ball to them.
Grant 7.5 - As per usual really. I think people are rating him more for who he is then how he plays, but he works hard and is just about everywhere all the time.
Zaaboub 5 - Poor game, hopefully just because of fitness because I've heard good things about the lad but on last nights performance he isn't much cop.

Paterson 7.5 - Scored a very well taken penalty and was in the right place at the right time to head home a good cross. If he starts more he will get better.
Sturrock 7.5 - Very impressed, holds the ball up well, looks for a good pass (and usually found it) and also showed some good strength.

Subs -

Corr 6.5 - Won so many headers, well taken header to score the equaliser and I think will be a very good asset when players learn where his knock ons are going to go, they usually went the same kind of areas but no one was on the end of them.
Spencer 6.5 - Came on and went to what I would say was an unfavoured wide position, did an amazing cross for Corr, then didn't do much else other then nearly get sent off. Would be better upfront but did ok considering he was out of position
Hall 6.5 - Shows some good skill and pace out on the wing, think he will only get better.

I can only echo all the other comments that it was a really enjoyable game

Morris 5 - will be disappointed at conceding the first goal. Whether it was his positioning or whether he should have organised the wall better, I'm not sure but stopping conceding so many from direct free-kicks was a noticable area we tightened up on when Mildenhall replaced Flahavan. Didn't have too many chances to redeem himself as Gerken was the busier keeper. Was positive coming for crosses, but didn't always get there.
Simpson 7 - an impressive performance for someone playing out of position. Was struggling fitness wise towards the end and might have been fouled for their second goal.
Barker 7 - another solid display. He reminds me of a not quite so painfully slow Mark Stimson.
Prosser 8 - the type of centre-half we've been crying out for for ages. He's in the Leon Cort mould of centre-halves. I'm not saying he'll be as good a player but he has that same sort of rawness, aerial ability and mobility (he's not quick, but for someone of his height, he's quite light) as Cort.
Coughlan 7.5 - an assured veteran display (I like the Newman comparison earlier), although another who was really holding on fitness wise towards the end
Easton 7 - not as smooth as Maher, but a bit more spiky in his tackling and work-rate
Grant 8 - had JCR in his pocket, won the penalty to get us back in the game and was still striding forward at the end. Nearly scored but for a very good save from Gerken.
Zaaboub 6 - didn't work for him, but I very much liked his movement and the positions he took up. The ex-players I'd compare him to would be Gower and Moussa. Even when it wasn't working he was available. Not remotely match fit though.
Soares 6.5 - I think he showed a bit more than he did Saturday.
Sturrock 7.5 - very impressive. Won plenty of headers, took up intelligent positions and showed a very good touch. I'm not saying he's Benji, but there's a fair bit of Benji in his game.
Paterson 8 - didn't fancy him for the penalty but he buried it (just). Excellent header for the winner, that's a side of his game I just hadn't seen before. Also went close with a free-kick. Promising.

Subs
Corr 8 - a terrific substitute performance. I'd be looking at starting one of Sturrock and Corr and bringing the other on as an impact sub. That would be where the squad depth can really be used to your advantage.
Spencer 8 - good little cameo with superb wing-play for the 2nd equaliser, although disappointing that he didn't score
Hall 7 - just the type of thing you are looking for off the bench

For Pringello:

Morris - 6

Simpson - 7
Coughlan - 8
Prosser - 8
Barker - 8

Soares - 6
Grant - 9 would be 10 but his performance wasn't perfect, a silly yellow card
Easton - 8
Zaaboub - 5

Sturrock - 8
Patterson - 8

Subs: (all subs contributed to one of our goals - nice work Luggy!)
Corr - 8
Hall - 7
Spencer - 7

Didn't go last night, but I'm delighted to see Corr is beginning to change peoples opinions quickly. I was very impressed with him on Saturday, but after reading the ratings thread it seemed like I was in the minority. Delighted for him to get his first goal as well.

Never done ratings before, but for this average thingy, I'll give it a go (oh and work is fairly quiet at the moment !!)

Morris - 7/10 - Did enough, am concerned about his height, but had no chance with the free kick for the first goal.

Simpson - 6/10 - Is without a doubt a better midfielder, but a decent enough back up for RB. Good attitude.

Coughlan - 9/10 - A leader. Reads the game well, wins headers and doesnt try to do anything adventagerous. Got caught for pace a couple of times in second half, but will be a great player for Div 2.

Prosser - 8.5/10 - Solid defender, like Coughlan, concentrates on defending. I like this.

Barker - 8/10 - Reminds me of a David Unsworth type of player. Strong, experianced, solid in the tackle. Safe defender, hopefully we can extend the loan !

Easton - 7.5 - Works hard and looks to move the ball quickly. Like most other people on her, reminds me of Maher in the way he plays, and I was always an avid supporter of Sir Kev !

Grant - 9 - Roots Hall has a new King !! Great work rate and willingness to carry the ball forward. Won so many free kicks.

Soares - 6.5 - Never hides, but would like to see him attack full backs and get to the bye line. Nice set pieces however.

Zaaboub - 6.5 - Quiet, so will reserve judgement. Willing him to do well, as I love his name !!

Paterson - 8 - 2 goals, decent shot saved for hat trick and ran his heart out. What more can you ask from a number 9 ?

Sturrock - 7.5 - Throws his body in front of players and not afraid to put his foot in. Like Paterson, works very hard.

Subs
Corr - 8.5 - I like him. Wins all sorts of headers, flicks, attacking and defending. He also likes to wind up defenders, which I think is great in a target man ! Great goal
Spencer - 7.5 - Runs and can change game. His cross was superb for Corr's goal ......... will make a great sub to change games if we need to mix things up. We haven't had a 'super sub' for many year and this ability will be vital during tough nil nil games during the season.
Hall - 7.5 - Attacks defenders, loves to run at players and superb cross for Patersons winner !

There's not much I can say that hasn't been said already, a quite simply brilliant night at RH. Defensively outstanding, Coughlan a true leader and Prosser magnificent. Midfield struggled a little when Zaboub was on, mainly because he is so unfit. Soares tried to get into the game, but kept it simple, Easton a good Captains role and Grant gave an outstanding display which I would say is one of the best I have seen for many a year! I will big up Blair Sturrock for a very energetic performance and will also big up Corr for coming on and battering the City defence but I have to say that young Paterson for me showed what a class player he is, not just for his two goals, but his diagonal running through the City defence all night had them in tatters, they didn't know how to handle him and it showed at the end of the game when he could hardly walk off the pitch - he simply gave everything. (66/1 as top scorer, he he)

Exciting times, Luggy now has a real headache of who to put out at Aldershot on Saturday - what a happy dilemma!
