Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-1 Halifax Town

Think Bonne deserves an apology from Goodliffe who managed to co ck up not once like Bonne did in the cup but FOUR times in the space of 20 minutes last night!
Thought he played ok after that but not quite so perfect are you son!
What i found interesting (and truly worrying lol) was seeing Bonne come back to our box to defend a late corner against us.
I mean, fair play to Bonne really, having the bollocks to step back into defence after the Sittingbourne fiasco. But i'm still not a fan of strikers back with defenders, back in the day of double laced up boots i'd have told any striker in our box where they belong, in no uncertain terms.

you could say the same about Bonne - sadly some fans still only look at his goal stats.
Yes Bonne is the same, a different type of player but very classy when you get him in the right mood, I always feel that if fans get on his back too much, it affects his game badly. He has the ability to score a lot of goals, but sometimes you will see his head go down he gets frustrated with himself and that means he goes into his shell.

Yes Halifax were a very good side. Full of movement and quick passing. I was impressed.
And yet we beat them, reasonably comfortably. Is our issue that we cannot play the way Kev wants against teams that come to park the bus or teams that will kick lumps out of you? I'm not sure that there is a viable Plan B for when the opposition doesn't come to play football, and this being non-league, that's most of them.

One comment above caught my eye: the one where we saw 'the best and the worst of Husin'.
It suggested they were in equal measures, but apart from one sublime piece of skill when the match was won, and chasing back to clear in the second half - what else?
Actually, saying he chased back to defend is faintly ridiculous. That's the least he should be doing!
It was his attempted flick over a player's head that led to their goal. He could have cleared/passed far easier, or even hit it against the player to earn a throw.
Until we scored, he and Bridge were passengers.

BUT the efforts of Taylor, Ralph, Morton and to some extent: Goodliffe, kept us in it.
Pleased for Kendall, but a bit like Walker he was finding it hard to make last third possession count.
Hopefully, that will have done his and Hopper's confidence a world of good.
I don’t want to disagree, but it must be remembered that Husin’s intricate 1-2’s (twice) down our right led to the corner from which we scored (the second goal I think).

He also played a lovely through ball to Ralph towards the end of the first half that lead to a decent chance.

It's funny how goal contributions affect judgement of a players performance because I thought Morton was having a real off night until the two corners. He was certainly far guiltier of slack passing than Husin.

With that said Noor does remain an enigma - for me he has the talent to be dominating games but plays within himself for the most part. Case in point being the outrageous skill and cross with his weaker foot in the second half, not long after his casual attempt at a flick lead to their goal.

What he does do consistently (and why Maher trusts him) is block passing lanes, press intelligently, win duels and retain possession to help us sustain attacks. The pieces of skill do leave you wondering why he can't do it more often, but then again that's probably why he's playing in the National League.

He also robbed thier midfielders of possession on a number of occasions. He links well with Morton. Apart from when he displays the sublime skills he showed down the left last night, he largely is taken for granted and probably goes unnoticed (except for the odd mistake), but I always see how he contributes. We should be grateful we have someone like him

As Paul Clark mentioned a few times. As soon as Husin got the ball his immediate reaction is to play it backwards. There were times that he could have got his head up and driven forward or looked for a forward pass.

and the fast left wing cross he provided which nearly resulted in a goal was backwards ?

You’re not getting the point!! Of course he played forward passes too but naturally Husin was looking to play backwards rather than forward which can kill momentum.
I do do get your point !!!!! In my opinion I don't think he does look to play backwards all the time and I gave you a simple example.

Much improved - quite impressive bar that cockup defensively but the response to that was good so just forget about it and move on imo.

A shame some idiots towards the back of Block V took it upon themselves to boo and jeer Bonne when coming on and spend the rest of the game making *very* funny comments about him. Don’t get the point of behaviour like this at all, doesn’t help anyone.

That aside a very good result
Yeah same idiots back of v singing how **** must you be were winning at home. Unbelievable!

Yes he has been a captain at previous clubs, when we signed him from Sutton their fans were disappointed he was leaving. He has another year after this on his deal but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him leave if a club comes in for him, he has a lot of competition for a place here.
Wouldn’t surprise me, if he wanted to come to us, if he enjoyed himself here.

I think that you may well be right. We always struggle to break down massed defences.

Hayes had it well covered before the deflection. Did he tip it onto the post later on. Hard to tell from where I was
Yep. The higlights that @D1versity has on his thread showed 2 really good saves late on whereas the club ones only have the later chance.

The one you are talking about was from a firm header when he gets to it very sharply & pushes it onto the post. There's another Pip shows before that when he went down for a header which was blocked but managed to get half up to palm the chance away from the rebound.

Looking at the club highlights their striker hooks the chance before it clips in off Noor's back foot & sort of looks like from where he hits it that it could be going wide, although that could be an optical illusion. Stopping the action doesn't really show it but no blame to Hayes on that one.
