Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2, Oxford United 1

Belated notes from a somewhat problematic trip to the Essex riveria on Saturday.

Can't add much more to what's been said already, but IMHO we were oh so lucky, Oxford were the better team and so many of our "stars" didn't turn up. Thank god for Ryan Hall, what a goal.

TBV - 10/10 brilliant atmosphere. Oxford supporters were some of the quietest I've seen (heard?) and only came alive after their goal.

Good to see some familiar faces, and hopefully I'll be back in the new year

Agree with the general consensus, we simply did not deserve to win, which makes it all the better that we did. We didn't really turn up and failed to control the centre of the park and Oxford carved open our defence far too easily until Grant came on. Seeing us play so poorly and pull off a win though did leave me smiling though.

Daniels - 9 MOM - Outstanding, kept us in it.
Clohessy - 6 - Got forward well.
Gilbert - 5 - Average but an awful howler in the first half.
Barker - 6 - Expected better.
Phillips - 6.5 - As Barker but +0.5 for his goal.
Ferdinand - 5 - First time I've actually seen him start a game. Big disappointment, often anonymous but did show one or two glimpses.
Timlin - 7 - Had an almighty task on his hands due to the lack Kane and generally poor performances around him, impressed again though. What a miss.
Leonard - 7.5 - Started off quietly but grew in stature through the game and quietly impressed me.
Hall - 6.5 - Thought he looked well off the pace, so wasn't suprised to find out he had a bug. Considering that, an assist and a quality goal was a superb contribution.
Dickinson - 7 - Slogged his guts out for zero reward, no chances really came his way.
Harris - 4 - Very poor I am sad to say.

Subs
Grant - 7 - Should have come on much earlier, tightened midfield up got things going.
Blair - 6 - Held the ball up well helped kill the game off.

We’re only allowed to make three changes for Tuesday I think, and he’d be one of them. Bring Mohsni or Prosser in and let Barker back in for Saturday.

Don't we have to start 6 of the players who started the previous game ? I make that up to 5 changes.

I think its either 6 who started the previous game or 6 that will start the following game. Although crawley completely ignored this in an earlier round and received no punishment.

In a situation where one club has a particularly good striker and he scores a hattrick in a game where the opposition have more of the play , it is rarely clased as lucky, yet when a goalkeeper has a good game , suddenly its an lucky win.

We were not lucky, there was no fortuitous bounces, freak goals or catastrophic mistakes, in fact the "luckiest" moment of the games was for Oxford when Timiln made a big mistake when clean through.

True, we may have been a tad fortunate that Oxford were incapable of getting more than one of there quite numerous shots on target past the Goalkeeper, but there was no luck, we had a team that were able to stop shots Oxford didn't.

although the Oxford keeper made the best save of the night:smile:

I think very few clubs will opt for the latter option as they will not want to be constrained in their League team selection if 2 or 3 of the six they intended to start in the following match got injured.

Presumably punishment would be being thrown out of the competition; not an option in Crawley's case !!

Sorry about the Whinging Bagerman, Just the After game moans coming in.
How many do you think you'll bring tuesday? Im guessing a 6000-6500 Crowd including away Fans.
You'll be in the top 5 this year, It all depends on if you have the Fabled Christmas curse (which we are always struck by...) I can see you dropping off towards the End of the season, So prove me wrong!
As for us, As you all said, our Finishing is our weak point. I guarantee That if we Had Craddock (injured) or hall (Recalled, but will be back November 17th) That we would of scored at least 3 of our easy chances. But its what happened in the match and at the end of the day you won.
Think we'll end up 3rd-6th unless we sign a Better striker in Jan.
Anyway, Good luck for the season, next time we play you is near the end of the season so Hopefully We're still giving you as much of a game as we did Saturday.

6,500 for a JPT game, really? So our 3 losses all season says to you that we will drop off? HA!
It's all well and good playing well, but if you can't score you aren't going anywhere.

However, if you play like that all season I have a sneaky feeling you will be in the top 3 with us!

I can't see us taking that many on Tuesday. Your ground is a horrible place to visit: miles from the station, expensive, soulless and all plastic and concrete, plus it's the JPT (you probably think something similar about Roots Hall). We'll take more to Preston.

I too am intrigued by why you think we'll fall away towards the end of the season. What happens in between may be a different matter and it was a small sample size but everything from Saturday suggested that we are better placed to finish the season stronger than you: we're not the ones blaming a lack of squad depth (although we were missing four players who would have started had they been available), yours was the team that run out of puff and tired after about 60 minutes. Of course we are going to have a wobble some time, we have taken 28 points out of the last 30 and that sort of pace is unsustainable, but if our wobble only comes right at the end of the season we'll have already wrapped up promotion and possibly the championship by then.

I thought Oxford were the second best team I've seen this season - second only to ourselves. There's no shame in losing to us as this is one of the best Southend teams in years and you gave us a better game than most: you are only the second team in the last ten matches to have not lost to us by two or more goals. I even reckon you'll go one better on Tuesday as you'll be fired up for it and we'll likely make a couple of changes.

So you are an Oxford fan "in peace" but all you've done is complain about all and sundry ...

Your finishing .. yep, ta for that
Plymouth are poor .. really, hadn't noticed :tumbleweed:
Crewe .. 1 goal from 26 attempts .. oh well, we got 3 including 2 in the last couple of minutes but i suppose you are about as interested in those stats as we are in yours :zzzzz:
If you'd scored just 1 of 3 MAJOR first half chances you'd have won .. Hmm it was 2-1 so possibly not eh
We scraped a win .. FINALLY :training:
Our keeper .. was doing his job, yes ok so he's particularly good at it, but hardly a reason for complaint is it ???
Louder fans .. which gained you HOW many points exactly ??, i'll not drag the age old acoustics thing out again but being honest from the SW corner of the ground i barely heard you FACT !!!
Stewards .. yes yes, 90% of stewards employed by clubs up and down the country arn't up to it WE KNOW
More than 763 .. so we are tax dodgers eh ?? actually i'd rather not comment further here :whistling:
Finally a veiled "well done" on the win, though you couldn't resist reminding us it wasn't deserved

I would like to make mention of the fact that i thought you were the best side i'd seen this season, and i wish you a successful campaign (my mum lives out in the Oxfordshire wilds so i've always kept half an eye on your scores) unfortunately i don't think it would be taken with the intention with which it was sent as i think you've come across as a pretty sore loser so i shan't bother :finger2:

....and the Oscar for best use of smilies 2011 goes to BLUEBLOOD.

Hall leaves U's sickened

SOUTHEND United’s Ryan Hall left Oxford United feeling sick at Roots Hall on Saturday — just hours after suffering similar symptoms himself.

Crawley's only JPT game this season was against us. They made 7 changes to their starting line-up against us, but if you look at the line-up they brought in 3 players that could be classed as first team regulars that for one reason did not play in the match before the JPT and also 3 of the players that were brought into the JPT line-up then started their next League match.

I think the actual rules are a bit more complicated than you can only make 5 changes and Crawley have not broken the rules this time.
