Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2, Oxford United 1

Regarding Timlin, I thought he was class yesterday. A few things he tried didn't come off for him but he kept at it and is clearly a very talented player. Really reminds me of Mark Gower.

maybe of subject slightly but....... On a normal day

  • we would had Kalala playing, which judging by this thread most beleive would have made a difference
  • We have Moshni to come back
  • We have Big Bad Barry Corr to come back
When was the last time we had this much to be happy about , and to look forward to

Hey, oxford fan in peace. First off, Our finishing this season has been awful. Dont let our 5-1 Demolition of Plymouth fool you, that was Them being awful. In a game against Crewe, we had 26 Chances. We scored once. If we had scored even 1 of the Major 3 chances in the first half, we would of won, But we didn't and at the end of the day you scraped a win. Secondly, Your keeper kept you alive. Good to hear he wont be playing Tuesday though.
We Were Definitely Louder than you, mainly because of the lies that We brought 760 (we had 800 brought BEFORE the match, and had about 1000 with the majority singing) As for the stewards, They're a bunch of Useless Idiots. one Punched a 14 year old kid when we scored Which lead to a bit of a scrap. No clue why we weren't aloud in the Yellow Side. Probably prefer it like it was, made our support look huge on FLS. Anyway, well done on the win, Undeserved as it is.

Daniels (GK) can play in the JPT as West Brom don't play in the competition, he is not allowed to play in the FA CUP for us

The north bank holds 2,000 so about 800 sounds right because while cramped you hadn't completely filled the half you had. The north bank has good acoustics and the other stands don't, so away fans always sound loud.

The seats at the front were more than made up for by the fans squished in to the sides and down the steps.

Why would we lie about the amount you bought? From where me and my mates were sitting we could hardly hear you.

You caught us on a bad day and we still beat you. Yeah you did play well and I think you'll be up there at the end of the season.

I was sat opposite in the South Stand and it wasn't full, but a good turnout, good match and good result:smile:

Crediting us with less fans means less taxes need to be paid? Something along those lines.

Rw the attendence, we never understand the figures ,without segregation our stadium holds 12300. did it look 50% empty
- to you ?
re louder- its the acoustics, we all want the North Bank back becasue of the acoustics. Plymouth had 300 and that out sung us , so its not surprising that 1000 or whatever all packed in were loud. If you were in our West stand it is very loud, but the sound doesn't go anywhere.

Ps enjoy Moshni on tuesday:winking:

ps - the guy on your website moaning about £21 for away supporters, it is £21 for us as well

Didnt go yesterday but would also like to see Hall up top with either Dicko or Harris. Hall is the best finisher at the club, and we have other players in the midfield who can create and score goals- Kane, Timlin,Leonard, Moshni.

Regarding Kane, clearly in a 4-4-2 he likes a defensive player with him so he can get up to support the attack as he has done. I feel we have two good centre mid combos on the evidence of this season so far- JPK and Kane on one hand, and Timlin and Grant on the other. The fact we have that kind of depth and Sawyer is sitting on the bench shows the quality we have.

penultimate paragraph by Chris Davis writing on OxVox

quote;
After last season's game, I recall writing that Southend kept the ball in safe areas denying United the opportunity to build up pressure. They did so again today in the final twenty minutes. Perhaps they have the players to do that well or perhaps they have a canny manager, who has a track record of winning promotion from Leagues 2 and 1, who knows where on the field risks can or shouldn't be taken

Best side to come to Roots Hall this season so far, and if we can grind out a result against teams like that then things look very positive. Two excellent goals from Mark Phillips just before half time (and wasn't that when we always used to be undone?) and Ryan Hall well into the second half, plus a number of top drawer saves from loanee goalkeeper Luke Daniels are what made the difference today. Hall was apparently playing after being up all night with sickness and diarrhoea, which probably explains why his overall performance was well under par and why he shot off down the tunnel so quickly after being subbed!

Several players seemed to find it difficult playing on the slippery surface today, the normally steady Barker lost his footing a few times whereas Mark Phillips had yet another fantastic game alongside. All of the defence had their hands full which meant it wasn't until well into the game that Clohessy got the chance to get forward down the wing. Timlin and Leonard were pick of the midfield for me today, both industrious workhorses, Kane was erratic, some moments of brilliance but far too many balls given away needlessly. They missed Kalala. Harris and Dickinson worked their socks off too, to little effect against a defence that continuously led with elbows, put arms around players' necks and waists and were very physical in their whole manner of play.

I felt the ref was poor in some of his decision making, how he gave a foul against Dickinson for backing when he'd been clearly elbowed in the head was beyond me! I was actually quite glad Mohsni wasn't playing though as I could see him falling foul of the ref!

Shame we have no GK lined up for Oxford or Preston, Daniels was fantastic today. Really top drawer saves and clear messages to his defence. I guess it'll be time for the Mohsni Monster to show us what he's got in the GK department by the sound of things though!

All credit to the Oxford supporters too, a great turn out, though if they think Southend's a **** hole, wait until they visit some of the other places in this league!

Some great reports on here (especially from fbm, ESB and Yorkie), so thanks from a western exile. I can always rely on my old pal OBL to keep me in the picture too. Thanks Kay - apropos Ryan's difficult night before the game, then it was incredible that he was able to keep running so far into the game and that wicked winner was like shimmying off a shovel!

Would that be Hall's best position? He is a goal scorer and goal provider. Having him up top effectively eliminates the goal providing part of his game. He is good when running onto balls from a deeper position too. Sticking him up top may nullify that also.

Maybe he can play the Defoe type striker, floating about across the top of the park but I do think on the flanks is where we will get most out of him.

So you are an Oxford fan "in peace" but all you've done is complain about all and sundry ...

Your finishing .. yep, ta for that
Plymouth are poor .. really, hadn't noticed :tumbleweed:
Crewe .. 1 goal from 26 attempts .. oh well, we got 3 including 2 in the last couple of minutes but i suppose you are about as interested in those stats as we are in yours :zzzzz:
If you'd scored just 1 of 3 MAJOR first half chances you'd have won .. Hmm it was 2-1 so possibly not eh
We scraped a win .. FINALLY :training:
Our keeper .. was doing his job, yes ok so he's particularly good at it, but hardly a reason for complaint is it ???
Louder fans .. which gained you HOW many points exactly ??, i'll not drag the age old acoustics thing out again but being honest from the SW corner of the ground i barely heard you FACT !!!
Stewards .. yes yes, 90% of stewards employed by clubs up and down the country arn't up to it WE KNOW
More than 763 .. so we are tax dodgers eh ?? actually i'd rather not comment further here :whistling:
Finally a veiled "well done" on the win, though you couldn't resist reminding us it wasn't deserved

I would like to make mention of the fact that i thought you were the best side i'd seen this season, and i wish you a successful campaign (my mum lives out in the Oxfordshire wilds so i've always kept half an eye on your scores) unfortunately i don't think it would be taken with the intention with which it was sent as i think you've come across as a pretty sore loser so i shan't bother :finger2:

My notes from yesterday

Oxford - probably the best league side to come here since we were in the Championship.. they took us apart first half with a very effective brand of football. They have three more very hard fixtures coming up and looking forward to them giving Crawley a good scare.

Southend - I dont think we played too badly yesterday, we just came up against a very good side. That said I thought we nullifed them in the last quarter of the game very well, and comments about them tiring are pretty fair.

Front two - They arent doing it for me. Punters on here think Dicko and Harris work well together. I dont see it. Rarely are they on the end of crosses (more often than not its midfielders).. they seem most often to not read each other. Dickinson could work harder and put himself about much more, and Harris is less potent than Sturrock. Bearing in mind Blair offers us strength at holding ball up and canny touches, I would swap him for Harris. If we get the front two right somebody is going to get hit for cricket score soon.

Referee - awfully incompetent for both teams

Crowd - poor attendance considering position in league

I thought you may have had up to 1000 and was surprised the crowd was so low... I'd have said 6500 minimum. Oh, and Daniels the keeper can play on Tuesday.

You could have been 3 up at the break without the saves to be fair. We start slowly at home. I've not seen a side work as hard as you have. The right back (Batt) is as good as I've seen at this level. The support was good as well until the last 15 when it all went a bit quiet.

Good luck - hope you make the play offs
