Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-2 Carlisle United

10/10 for 2 different people behind me in the East Red's yesterday.

Person number 1:- "Can I have my cap back?" (after throwing it at the lino when Barrett was sent off"

Person number 2:- "Lino you look like a paedo with a flag!"

:D

Mixed emotions for that game. When we went 2-0 down my heart just went, couldn't physical sing anymore I was that sad and ****ed off. Also I'm not just saying this because I'm a Southend fan but the Ref was honestly ****!!
Thought we were great to get 2 goals back, thought we would of gone on a done a hartlepool on them or something.
Johnny Herd should definetly start no doubt about it, HONESTLY, his defending is also better than Malone, he can attack aswell. Played quality. Scannell also playing quality. And our whole team did :) Was really looking for a win though, ah well better than nothing. Tuesday night against Walsall please 3 points we don't want to be looking for anything else.

being a Southend fan of many years, did no one else see a Webby type performance yesterday. We were fair more direct that we have been this season, getting the ball forward at every opportunity. We did not play about with the ball at the back and got the ball out the last third as quickly as we could. we also created more chances and threats yesterday than we have for majority of the season.

I applaud the players for the effort and passion yesterday and will take heart if they continue to put that type of efforts in.

Even if the players are not as technical as we have seen in previous seasons, there is no excuse for anything less than 100% effort.

UTB's , Walsall HAS to be a game that we win, ifso, it may also give us confidence as well to take the game to Bristol Rovers. If we can go into Easter with at least 4 more points from our next two games, we can easily get points against Yeovil and take a victory at Gillingham.

UTB's, in Tilly we trust !!

I listened to the game on the Radio yesterday when we went 2.0
David Webb stood up from his view in the stands then started shouting to Steve on the touch line to start shouting at the players to start running around. lol

I am a big fan of David Webb... If we can win on tuesday I believe we can get out of the bottem 4 come May time

HAPPY DAYS

Just a couple of observations from me.

1) The last few games has seen Scannell perform his best for us. Worked much harder yesterday and could finally show the promise T&B thought he had when they brought him in.

2) Herd or Malone? Well, being honest, I don't think there's a huge difference in certain areas of their game. Defensively Malone was better but has not got any confidence at has been cack. Herd's defensive game is not good but seeing as we are conceding goals whoever plays there it probably doesn't matter.

Malone's delivery is not good although he always tries to whip in with pace and if he does get one right it is almost undefendable. However, he hasn't got one right for ages. Herd's is much more accurate but with no pace and this makes it easier for a keeper to claim.

What Johnny does have is the throw, which is a weapon that could keep us up. With Barrett, Francis, Baldwin, Paterson and Vernon (or even Mvoto) to aim at this could be where our goals come from. They need to watch what Stoke do and copy it.

Herd must now start every match and take every attacking throw until he has arms like Popeye.

Right, now I've had a chance to calm down, here's my thoughts on the game.

Firstly, I was very pleased to see Johnny Herd back in the starting line up and I do wonder if that was somewhat a Webby influence. We create chances with him in the side, not just with his throws but from the throw ins we won a lot of corners and it was from one of those that we got the equaliser.

Yesterday and against Exeter we were getting the ball forward a lot quicker, sometimes almost too fast.

Mildenhall - Really losing patience with him, imo at fault for both the goals and always looking to have a moan at someone, doesn't release the ball quick enough. Made one good save in the second half and I sense the other players don't trust him.

Francis - Been playing much better of late, linked up well with Scannell again.

Barrett - Ref seemed to have it in for him from the first whistle, we've been calling for the players to show more fight and passion, and he gets himself booked for a 'proper tackle', the second booking was laughable.

Baldwin - Really like him, shame we'll never be able to get him on a perm, wins plenty in the air and good with the ball at his feet, not just a hoof ball merchant, that must be why he has no future at Colchester.

Herd - Already covered what I thought of him, good to see him back.

Scannell - Since the Orient game he's been playing very well, finally found a bit of consistency, unlucky not to get on the score sheet, was a great effort but it was too central.

Grant - Goes about his business with very little fuss, already been said that he looked more comfortable in the middle with Moussa last week.

McCormack - Good energy in the middle and got forward well, got stuck in as we know he always will.

Moussa - Best game for a while, I didn't think he was going to shoot as he didn't look comfortable taking it on his left and in the end he scuffed it but I couldn't give two hoots about that, if you don't buy a ticket you don't win the raffle, they all count.

Paterson - Showed good skill, once good chance that he really should have buried.

Vernon - Disappointing again, he gets into the right area's and then does very little. I don't really see him as an upgrade on Revell.

Subs -

Sankofa - I thought he looked pretty composed and comfortable. Don't think we'll see M'Voto play for us again.

I won't comment on the ref because I don't want to give him the time of day.

Best performance for a while, Carlisle had 2 attempts on target in the first half and scored both of them. Awful defending on the 2nd goal especially, everyone stod still and their player nipped in behind the defensive line to put them 2-0 up. That said it was a great fightback when we could have easily rolled over and let in another 3 from there.

To be honest there ken you kind of missed tha fact that at 2-0 they had a rocket which hit mildy looped up in the air and was fortunate to be headed clear. Could have easily been 3-0 and good night vienna.

Quick observations:

- very telling that when we loose our centre half we do not bring on the premier league reseve on our bench. Phew.

- Vernon. Ugh.

- Francis, Scannell. Top marks

- Herd. Keep him in the team

It’s almost traditional that teams fighting for their lives towards the end of March witness a complete absence of luck. The wood work is hit an unimaginable number of times, key players develop brittle bone disease and a flock of questionable officials descend onto games like vultures. It won’t surprise you to hear that, at Southend, we’ve had it all.

Match...the future...

Not read all the previous posts on the match so will call it as I see it.....

Terrible defending to go two nil down then a great fight back in the first half.

The second half was again, as so many performances this season, poor with the opposition looking a far better outfit, as has been the case in most matches this season. Having said this it was overall, apart from the first 15 minutes, the best performance seen for a long time without the Barney factor! However we still have no cutting edge upfront!

Moussa played his best of the season in the first half and scored a good goal, Barrett should not have been booked for the first incident and certainly not sent off for the second. Scannell looked the part, Francis managed about a 75% success rate with crosses which is unsual for him.

Herd was very good, why oh why does he not start regularly, although he was at fault for the second goal as was the central pair.

Vernon was very poor, Paterson might look better with Spencer alongside him! If I were Tilly I would play the pair of them in every reserve game and then in the first team so they get to know each other better, get used to what each of them has to offer. They are afterall the future if we secure Spencer at the end of the season, BIG IF. They could be very good in Division Two.....

Baldwin was a little inconsistent in the first half but got better as the game progressed, unfortunately I doubt we will get him for next season which is a shame as he is at worse a division one player.

Two 'must win' games have gone without the crucial wins and I fear we are down even if we win against Walsall.

Have a feeling that Tilly may not be with us next season and I would not be surprised if Adam Barrett is player manager next season or possibly assistant alongside Webby....just have a feeling.

The future and all good things will be revealed by Ron at the Q & A......as I look out my window.....pigs are flying by....
