Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-2 Carlisle United

We didn't see Webb until we were at 2-2, which sounds pretty typical of one of Martins henchmen.
Mildy was seriously at fault for the second goal, he called for it, loudly, we could hear him quite clearly, he then apologised to Barrett and everyone else, full marks to him for owning up.
It is only the second time in years that i have felt like running onto the pitch and lynching someone, the first time was against Charlton at home, i think everyone knows who i wanted to lynch, today i would have loved to have seen that little idiot who was the ref hanging from one of the goal posts. How can we expect to play real football on a level surface with idiots, cheats like that in charge of our games?

Perhaps you didnt see him, but he sits in front of the commentary box and they said he was constantly shouting stuff to Tilson right from the start.

Sounds like with your comment you arent prepared to give him a chance anyways?

I do agree with "too one paced" line. We're not playing as much pretty football as we used to, and today was screaming out for Spencer's pace up there.

I agree with you, the last matches we have been desperate for a natural goalscorer. Would like to see Scott Spencer given a start with Patterson on Tuesday night and let him run at the Walsall defence. Think these two up top along with Johnny Herd & Damien Scannell could make all the difference.
C'mon Tilly give Screech a chance!:)

Absolutely spot on. I thought Vernon was a telegraph pole today, whilst Paterson ran down everything and at least tried to make things happen. Thought his effort in the second half was great, just caught it too well.

Spencer and Paterson against Walsall please. Herd to be retained at left back and Scannell on the right wing please. Macca's distribution was poor today and I thought Barrett had a mare!

Mate i am more than happy to give him a chance, but the way in which he was brought in still hits a raw nerve with me, also he was, correct me if i am wrong, brought in as an 'assistant manager', in my opinion an assistant manager should not be up with the directors, or sitting in front of the directors box, or in front of the commentary box, he should be, just like most assistant managers, be down there with the manager, assisting.
to be honest i think he has been brought in ready to take over as caretaker manager 'when' (not if) Tilly goes. MY OPINION ONLY. Sorry if anyone doesn't agree with 'my opinion' but i feel i have the right to express it, only time will tell if i am right or wrong. IN TILLY I TRUST.

There is now hard and fast rule on what an assistant 'should' do - in fact Brush moved to the directors box over the last few seasons. A lot of managers do it too and stay in contact with their assistants.

Dont get me wrong, Brush was harshly dealt with - they should have both (or neither) gone - but Webb is here now and as odd as it is/was, we have to hope he is having an impact.

All I'm saying is that whatever he did today seemed to help Tilly and got us back into it.

In all honesty the 2nd was down to Mildy, he called for the ball, we heard him plainly, that is why everyone stood still, it was his mistake and, to his credit, he did apologise to everyone around him.

I heard Mildy shout 'OUT' but you could be right as Barratt ducked....

erm my opinion is for the first time in a while the players deserved the clap i stay to give them at the end i thought they were absoultely excellent and i now belive we will stay up.

Does anyone else find it amazing how our most passionate player is Pat Baldwin? the man on-loan from our rivals. As for tilly, some of the decsions from the ref today were appauling yes, but as a manager surley you would show some anger and frustration and let the ref no, but he just stands there with his arms crossed, i know his coaching pedagogy style is not neil warnock esq, but standing on the sidelines feeling sorry for himself is not going to win us anymore decsions.

Herd 7: Only one real iffy moment as I stated above and he gave Malone a lesson or two in my mind.

You mean only real iffy moment apart from the second goal when he lost his man and that other time when he was caught dozing in no man's land and that other time....

If that was Malone he'd have been slated for that, yet Herd was cheered for every shank into the stands.

Moldy 6

being a Southend fan of many years, did no one else see a Webby type performance yesterday. We were fair more direct that we have been this season, getting the ball forward at every opportunity. We did not play about with the ball at the back and got the ball out the last third as quickly as we could. we also created more chances and threats yesterday than we have for majority of the season.

I applaud the players for the effort and passion yesterday and will take heart if they continue to put that type of efforts in.

Even if the players are not as technical as we have seen in previous seasons, there is no excuse for anything less than 100% effort.

UTB's , Walsall HAS to be a game that we win, ifso, it may also give us confidence as well to take the game to Bristol Rovers. If we can go into Easter with at least 4 more points from our next two games, we can easily get points against Yeovil and take a victory at Gillingham.

UTB's, in Tilly we trust !!

OKay - here goes. Some big positives from yesterday:

1) we came back from 2-0 down when we could have rolled over and lost by 4 or 5.
2) we looked more of a team than we have for a while
3) more positive play and maybe a bit of self-believe is starting to creep in?

And the negatives:

1) Losing Barratt - didnt see the incident, so cant comment on the second yellow, but the first booking was a joke! We also lose him to a ban just as he is building up a partnership with Baldwin and need a strong defence more than ever.
2) Only one point - we could (and probably should) have won yesterday
3) not many games left to get out of the drop zone. We have to hope that we pick up points and teams around us keep losing. Could be too much of an ask.

Ratings -
Mildy 7 - looked like a misunderstanding with AB at fault for the second goal. made a couple of decent saves.
Herd 7 - brings a different dimension to our game and the long throw-ins were causing no end of trouble. But, still young and gets caught out on occasion. Probably needs to work on his strength and stamina. But, no worse than Malone defensively - just think Tilly wants to nurture him a bit more because he is a serious talent for the future.
Barrett 7 - Mixed day for AB. Scored the goal, but could have been partly at fault for their second. No idea what the first booking was for, and the ref seemed to be determined to screw up our afternoon with his dodgy decisions, so the second booking was inevitable at some point! Didnt see if it was a bookable challenge, so will just need to watch the replay (if they show it)
Baldwin 8 - very solid, good performance
Francis 7.5 - played well. As usual, his dead ball delivery was good quality.
Moussa 7.5 - got a goal and finally got stuck in and produced a good performance. Biggest improvement in individual performance today (certainly an improvement in attitude and effort!)
Macca 7.5 - played well. When he's playing like this he's great to watch! More please.
Grant 7 - I'm getting very high expectations of Granty, but today wasnt his best performance - not because he didnt play well (he did), but because I was expecting even more from him. Probably not fully fit yet, and this showed when we went down to 10 men.
Scannel 8.5 - he's turning into a bit of a gem, and hes still young enough to develop and improve even more. Played really well and deservedly got man of the match. Final ball lets him down now and then and is still a bit hesitant, but looks much more confident now he's had a run in the side.
Paterson 7 - Thought he did okay, needs to work on upper body strength (which is what Barney did last summer and looked a far better player for it). Just hope the resident boo-boys dont destroy his confidence.
Vernon 7 - A lot of experience and spent a lot of time creating space for scannell and Moose to exploit. Despite missing a sitter, thought he played well.

sankofa 6.5 Not on long enough to really make an impact, but did a good job of damage limitataion with that pain in the *** from Doncaster /Millwall!

ref 3 - Cant say how awful I thought this guy was. Bad decisons all round and seemed to make the rules up as he went along. Why the FL lets idiots like this take centre stage and ruin games I'll never know!

Some good some bad today.

Positives were the performances of Moussa, Scannell, Macca and the passion the players showed. Really shouldve won it in the 2nd half, created a lot more than we have in recent games.

Negatives, well the defending for the 2 goals was diabolical and highlights why we are 3rd from bottom. Even in the 2nd half both their wide players gave Herd and Francis a good roasting and we had plenty of last ditch blocks and challenges. Thought Herd was actually pretty poor, his crosses were overhit and he got taken to the cleaners by their right winger. Also the front 2 did nothing for me, Paterson works hard but not strong enough and Vernon was just anonymous.

Midfield certainly looked settled, and probably our best 4 midfielders, hopefully they can stay there till the end of the season. The one thing that annoyed me in the 2nd half in particular we held on to the ball too long, hence why there were a few offsides when an earlier ball mightve led to a better chance. Players look scared to shoot at times.

Barrets red card was harsh I thought but I think today he had one of his worst games of the season. Price had the making of the defence in the 1st half and Carlisle played some very neat and incisive attacking football, although their defence was very susceptible.

Francis had a poor game too, unusual for him. Guessing he will go for Sankofa in the middle which doesnt fill me with much confidence.

Nothing today made me think we wont be playing in League 2 next season although the players will give their all to make sure that doesnt happen.

You didnt notice that when we went down to 10 men, we went with a tight 3 man midfield then? Neither fullback had the luxury of a covering wide midfield man. We chose to defend the centre ground and let the wings take care of themselves - and it worked.......they didnt score.

I'm more worried by the TOTALLY ineffective front two, both too similar, who prefer to play with their backs to goal. Vernon has now missed 3 absolute sitters that I know of (probably costing us at least 4 points). He needs to be shipped back NOW before he costs us any more. Patterson MAY have potential, but he looks weak to me.

Ok all the abusers stand by!
I agree with most of the ratings except Moussa's, and to tbh I was absolutely appalled with his attitude ..until he scored. Prior to that he was lazy, couldn't give a to** and would not track / tackle back to support Herd.
Couldn't even bring myselfe to cheer when he scored as I thought him getting the goal and all the plaudits was so unjust considering his performance up until then.
UTB

To be honest mate, i agree with you. He was lazy before he scored!

Vernon is a joke. We let revell go but get him in?????? The bloke is a waster.

Herd and scanell had great games especially scannell he did so well and deserved a goal for his efforts.

Agreed totally that Vernon is a joke but if you think Revell was the man to shoot us to safety then I think your wrong.

I think it's good to have two different viewpoints of the game - Webb used to sit up there when helping Newman as well.

Yes, we said the same where we sit, much more direct and it worked for the majority of the players, especially in midfield. Now I have a confession, I didn't see three of the goals so I can't comment too much! The only one I saw was Moussa's, which I thought was taken well and was very timely.

As to the players, for the reason above, I don't think I can rate them. I know there was just complete disbelief at both Carlisle's goals. Mildy didn't do a lot else, still takes too long to clear the ball out sometimes - Macca was screaming to him for a quick punt at one stage during the second half but no, he waited for the target man, Vernon to be in position.
Franno, seemed quieter but perfectly composed, Scannell wandered a lot leaving him more exposed so he was busy.
Baldwin, love the guy, want him to stay.
Barrett, thought both bookings were harsh but the ref was a complete joke. Glad to see him on the score sheet.
Herd, good to see him back and playing with confidence, also with corner taking now part of his remit. Some variety made a lot of difference, love the Delap towel!!!
Scannell, yes, the lad did very well, but as mentioned he DID keep wandering (before the change) and made us far too narrow. Glad to see the energy concerns from Orient are now in the dim and distant past.
Macca, Barrett's sending off probably saved him from another one tbh. The ref had it in for him completely, how does a studded challenge on his thigh causing him to fall to the ground become a foul on the oppo player? The armband seemed to calm him, and he was galvanising the others with "****ing come on"s!!! Nearly set up a peach of a goal if Matty Paterson had put it away.
Grant, playing more defensive than last week, quieter but still influential.
Moussa, something you don't hear from me very often, but the lad did well. He and Scannell both benefitted yesterday from Grant and Macca being in the middle and it paid dividends. Now, please keep it up.
Vernon, don't understand how a striker with a pedigree like his is not doing better. Something hasn't clicked, and I wish it would. Want to see 4-3-3 Tuesday, him, Matty and Screech.
Paterson, looked stronger and more likely to score than Vernon, keep at it young man.

Sub: Sankofa for Paterson, a change as I think Screech was about to come on when Adam got sent off. Slotted in well and looked comfy enough. Be interested to see how Tilly plays it Tuesday.

Ref was dire, end of. I know I say it often but this one was absolutely shocking. I believe my tirade against him caused amusement to some of the non regulars sitting nearby!!! Short Man Syndrome personified.

TBV, well done on the Franno chant guys, didn't get the chance to see if or how he reacted but glad to hear it, and well done for the constant enthusiasm throughout, even when we went 2 nil down.
