Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-2 Brentford

Frustrated by Tilly again. 20 mins to go why not take off Jeff and throw another striker on.
First half possibly worst of the season absolute rubbish. Second half showed the passion that has been missing the last few games.
Mvoto,Franno,Grant and Laurent excellent. We always looked vulnerable on the break though and lucky not to concede late on
Getting rather sick of all these ex strikers scoring against us tho. Jabo and Barney next?

We are gone; there is no doubt of that. The second half performance was good but once again, we started the game in lacklustre fashion and conceded a sloppy goal with a simple run from Maccy D catching us out. Our first goal was a good finish from Laurent after excellent work from the Moose. We then let a crossfield ball on the deck find a Brentford player and he finished into the far corner very well. From the kick off, we go up to their end and Laurent manages to get to a crossball just before their goalkeeper and slides the ball in.

Sadly, a win was crucial and we couldn't get it. Tilson tactically got it wrong again imo, changes should have been made after we equalised.

Mildy - 6.5 - Nothing to do really but pick the ball out of the net twice. Made one good save.
Francis - 7 - Worked hard, as he has done pretty much all season.
Baldwin - 6 - He did alright but can't say I particularly rate him. Bit sloppy when clearing balls and didn't win much in the air.
Mvoto - 6 - Struggled in the 1st half but improved in the 2nd half and probably had his best half since his injury.
Herd - 6 - Alright again but not playing all that well tbh.
Grant - 6.5 - Energetic as ever but did some silly, rash things.
Christophe - 3 - N/A
Macca - 6 - First half was very poor but was better in the 2nd
Moussa- 7 - Looked dangerous on the ball and got an assist.
Laurent - 7.5 - Don;t like him upfront but tbf to him got a couple of goals and did look dangerous when he strayed on to the wings.
Vernon - 6.5 - Held up the ball well at times but had one great chance which he somehow contrived to miss.

Mildenhall - A few descent saves - 7
Mvoto - Absolutely outstanding, really solid, kept Charlie boy quiet, not too much of a play maker though - 8
Pat Baldwin - Quite solid, think he was captain, not bad being a loaneeee and from local rivals - 7
Franno - Got loads of brilliant crosses and corners in, very unlucky not to score directly from a corner, and AGAIN let me down on a tenner - 7
Herd - Good throw ins again, how don't we score from them ? Made some descent tackles, got caught a few times - 6.5 / 7
Moose - thank god he's back, made some really good link ups, set Laurent up, really brilliant - 7
Grant - He is a machine - 8
Macca - crazy crazy guy, shouldn't have been booked, probably was mouthing it off a bit, he showed passion, got to love him - 7
Christophe - not too bad today preety good, made a few neat touches played a few descent passes, he has the class their, just needs to apply some grey matter. 6.5
Vernon - good touch, strong, a descent target man, actually has some talent, no offence Harold lovers. 6.5

and right...now...we have Laurent he is the most hilarious, crazy player, I have ever, ever watched. He has the most skill we've seen down here ever. Everything he does is really funny, how can he be so good. He scored 2, how did it happen? Brilliant interview at the end aswell. The bloke IS A GENIUS! LONG LIVE FRANCIS LAURENT! I assume that you left Christophe out as he was so poor.....I will rate him for you.

Christophe - 1 He turnt up

I'll do my ratings later but just a quick view on M'voto.

Chucked in a bit from the start after Barrett had to pull out, but I thought he was much, much better tonight.

Won everything in the air, ok he was up against a 5 ft 7 in Charlie MacDonald but he was still very powerful and dominant in the air.

With the ball at his feet he looked a lot more assured and confident.

Begs the question was he fit when he'd been playing and making errors, especially against Hartlepool.

Tonight was the first time he's looked fit and mobile since the Leeds game in September.

When we came back 2-2, we were the only team who looked like going ahead and winning the game! I'm happy we didn't lose, but i'm dissapointed we didnt score a 3rd :(
Other than that, lets win at home to Brighton, away to Oldham and definetly at home to Stockport.
Everyone in the second half tonight played quality.

Game of two halves. First half sloppy, little heart or effort and going nowhere, but 2nd half I thought we were excellent. Relentless attacking. Need to stop starting so poorly though, it's no good to be chasing games all the time. The fact that a loanee from our arch rivals was named captain today ahead of our so-called VC McCormack clearly speaks volumes about Macca's attitude.

Mildenhall - 6.5 - What little he had to do, he did well. Don't think he was troubled much, and made one particularly good save to his right in the second half from a long-range volley.

Franno - 7.5 - Got forward well, crossed superbly.....our strikers need to get on the end of those more, because crosees like the ones he put in tonight are begging to be put in the back of the net. Don't remember any defensive frailties, but does switch off and get sloppy with his distribution sometimes.

Herd - 6 - Not bad. Got forward and failed to track back sometimes, and got beaten on the outside a few times too. His throw is a fantastic weapon but has a bit to learn defensively.

Baldwin - 6.5 - Solid and no nonsense.

M'Voto - 8 MOM - Best performance since before he got injured. Solid, composed, aggressive, won some great tackles, positioning and distribution good, and didn't look like he could make a calamitous error at any point. Well done to him.

Grant - 6.5 - Ran his heart out sometimes, and then walked about lazily a few minutes later. Passing sometimes a bit off, but looked a menace going forward with the ball at his feet. 4 times he took wayward long range shots when passes were clearly on!

JFC and Macca - 5 - Very poor partnership in the middle. Both drifted out of position leaving gaping holes in the middle, no communication so got in each others' way, couldn't string any decent passes together between them, wandered around looking like they'd rather be somewhere else. Both very frustrating.

Moussa - 7 - Unspectacular, but never really put a foot wrong. Passes were good and looked dangerous going forward.

Vernon - 6 - Poor in the air tonight, but quite good with ball at feet. Never really looked like getting into a scoring position though.

Laurent - 7 - An extra point for the goals, he'd be a 6 without. Whilst he looks dangerous going forward, he still loses the ball too much, he's still to greedy when passes are on, and he overcomplicates things too much. The silly back heels with his back to goal are particularly frustrating when he'd be better off controlling the ball and turning towards goal or running it into space.

Kettle - 4 - Missed things for both sides that a FL referee simply shouldn't be missing, gave the away side too much protection. Generally poor.

Decent crowd tonight, got behind the team well for the most part, but there were periods, even in the 2nd half, where you could hear a pin drop. Banter with Brentford fans was fun after our 2nd went in, though.

Mildy 6 - 1 decent save, some good clearances but too slow off his line twice could have cost us

Francis 8 - Our joint best player

Herd 5.5 - Not much there today, still no worse than Malone and he can throw it long

Baldwin 6 - Poor distribution, but looked comfortable defensively

Mvoto 6 - Played well, but left Cort far too much space for the second goal

Moose 7 - When he had the ball he looked like creating something. We missed him

Grant 7 - Worked hard, our other joint best player

Macca 7 - Worked hard and kept the ball well, still not much going forward

JFC 5 - Can't understand the critisism of him on here tonight, he played well by his recent awful standards tonight. One moment in the second half summed him up when Francis was in 30 yards of space, by the time JFC controlled the ball he was in 20 yards of space and then he passed the ball straight to the Brentford player.

Laurent 7 - Looked really good second half. I couldn't see from my angle, but was his first goal a cross that got deflected in - if so, that's irony for you

Vernon 6 - Held the ball up OK, but so slow

1st game of the season

First game for me this season being back in the UK... Very frustrating evening and we are clearly lacking in class and we seem to be carrying some players through to the end of the season.

Where has the wonderful passing football gone? Is it because we are nearly relegated that the football is all direct hoof ball? Players seemed to get in each others way (communication?) as well which was worrying. Way too many loose passes.

Tilson seemed very quiet. Not sure relegation will be good for us thats if we even get there.

Horribly expensive.... 22 quid a ticket for a team 3rd bottom in the 3rd division. Perhaps you can argue that we are contributing to the clubs success... call it a donation but the footy has to be much better. I think its called 'value'.

That said i love watching the blues especially when they score... nothing like it... and I had a good shout at the players which i enjoyed immensly and flet like a teenager again! Ive been waiting all season to put my ratings down so here you go.

Mildenhall - 7 - not bad, one dodgy kick and 2 great saves towards the end of the game to make it 1 point not 0. Big keeper hence both low shots going in and under him.

Francis - 9 - Man of the match by a country mile. Clearly the most talented player in our squad. understand he hasnt been the most consistent but looked supremely talented and carried almost every player on the pitch... good skill, good free kicks, passses, crosses, defending and attacking. Seemed to have time on the ball and used it intelligently. If only we had a great right winger there who could interchange with him.

Baldwin - 6 - slow but solid... felt nervous every time he got the ball. Seemed to get caught out time and time again when players turned him and versus pace.

Mvoto - 6 - clumsy but solid... seemed to get in the way and headed well. Distribution horrible and all sixes and sevens but generally got in the way of a lot balls.

Herd - 7 - a little bit dodgy at times - lost his man a few times and some nervous defending. Played well in the second half and put some nice balls down the wing for the front pairing to chase.

Grant - 7 - didnt see him too much in the first half and played like a central midfielder. What a shame he isnt in the middle. Pretty skillful player and tried to make things happen to fight back. Hopefull he stays and makes the centre all his (and more to the point we get a decent right wing).

Christophe - 4 - I see others comments here today and for previous matches and i cant believe his ability has disintegrated so far. On todays performance he has been one of the biggest disappointments. i cant believe he has become so bad. Dreadful passing, couldnt tackle for toffee and was a complete liability in giving the ball away. What a shame because im sure he was good when he first arrived. Perhaps the payments, relegation has hurt him more than others. Would be nice to get behind him but he just couldnt do anything right. Perhaps its his frenchness and the white flag is flying.

Macca - 5 - wasnt impressed by him either. Both too deep, got booked, no creativity... perhaps he needs someone better in center mid because he seems to be carrying Christophe. I think its midfield where we nearly lost the game - some horrible passing, defending , pressing. No time to really look up and do something with the ball.

Moosa - 5 - was he playing? I didnt realise until he was playing in front of us in the second half. A few nice runs and passes. He played too deep, didnt offer himself enough and has no left foot. A major issue as a left winger. Again not a winger but this has already been discussed in depth before. Grant and Moosa for next season?

Vernon - 6 - tried hard and ran his heart out. Apparently he is the target man but i dont see how. He didnt seem that big - perhaps it was his lack of pace. Again not very skillful. In one move, he collected the ball and mvoeed inside of the defender. He then shot and if it wasnt for the defender we might have given them a throw in. Appalling effort. Got in a few good positions but we dont have the players to pick him out.

Laurent - 7 - I know he scored 2 but he had easier shots and was well off. he ran his heart out... tried a few tricks and some didnt come off but he could be pivotal but only if he plays like the second half every game. for the full game.

Subs... none!
Refree... 6 - seemingly could only see anything in one half... gave everything to the team playing from the north bank to the south bank

there you go. I reckon its relegation. with a 5 points difference, possible 9 points deduction, players not paid, and inability to score first or even look like wanting to play, attack, score and win... then we will go down. Maybe good for us maybe not... time will tell. Disappointing to see how much the blues have dropped from the top of the cyclical good times.

Up the blues as always!

You could have got a ticket for £10 using the special offer, mind you it would have been in the Family Stand.

Why could we be deducted 9 points?

Mildenhall - 7 I thought he could have done better on the first goal but couldn't do anything about the second. Two fine saves as well.
Francis - Awful in the first half. Gave the ball away virtually every time he got it and his body language was awful. Fabulous in the second half though, pulling all of the strings.
M'Voto - 8 This was the player that we got from Sunderland in the first place. Really solid and kept the ball well.
Baldwin - 5 Looks more fallible the longer we have him. MacDonald roasted him for pace. Too many mistakes - possibly the captaincy got to him.
Herd - 7 Did fine. Got caught out once that I noticed but kept the ball well and used it effectively. One of the few who played well in the first half. Put quite a few good balls into the box.
Grant - 7 Held onto the ball well but tends to be negative in his passing and took two shots at goal when he really should have passed. On the first occasion, Vernon was in the clear. His error, giving the ball away in midfield, led to their second goal.
Christophe - 4 His first touch and passing ability is awful. His decent tackling isn't sufficient compensation.
Macca - 5 Pretty poor really. Good first touch and starts driving ahead in fine style but gives the ball away AGAIN and AGAIN. MUST do better. When shooting, he should aim at the ground as the ball goes over EVERY time. Good free kick that nearly went in.
Moussa - 8 Did really well and was instrumental in most of our good moves.
Vernon - 7 Held up the ball really, really well and was a constant outlet for the team. He really must believe in himself in front of goal as he barely had a shot.
Laurent -8 Poor in the first half although he didn't stop running. His first touch was poor and he blazed a decent chance over the bar. His second half was fabulous - he can be such an exciting player.

We're down, but thanks for the second half lads - my boy and I did enjoy the game despite it all.

Only doing ratings as im ****ed off,

Mildy 6 - Made two good saves but wondered if he could have got down sooner to both goals.

Francis - 8 - Slow in first half superb in second im fast falling in love with him again.

Herd - 6 - Looks for a pass which I like but looked a little jittery.

Baldwin - 6 - Solid enough at the back but please stop hoofing it col style.

MVoto - 7 - Marshalled McDonald so well but learn to pass please.

Moussa - 7.5 - Two assists and a willing runner.

Grant - 9 - Could he give us anymore? I think he is a class act.

Macca - 7 - Worked hard and was at the heart of al the good stuff.

JFC - 4 - Being kind - He is a shadow of the enforcer we say when he was on loan.

Laurent - 7- Scored twice (all be it one was a o.g) and created havoc but still a bit to headless for me.

Vernon - 6 - Not a fan - Ran hard so full credit there but never looks like scoring.
