Well they say a week is a long time in football and for southend f.c and its fans the last few months have seemed an enternity.

All that has gone before has been well documented and tbh having been a fan for 20 years i was personally fearing the worst having witnessed some of the performances this season.

Well what a releif it is to not only see a team playing with confidence at home aswell as away . I had felt as far removed from the club and the team and the management as i possibly could just a few months back and times were grim. Now just a short while later this does feel like southend united again and i do genuinely feel for these players as i had done for previous teams.

Fans are somewhat reluctantly returning and perhaps our recent run has raised interest again. Lets hope to get our first 6k crowd saturday in what is becoming a regular 6 pointer in our quest not just for the play-offs but for automatic promotion.

On to the game itself.

As against barnet just few days earlier southend started poorly, but unlike barnet who in truth didnt posess much threat oxford attacked with more vigour and took the lead following some indaquate defending with constable notching from close range.

Blues could have taken the lead as early as the second minute but corr uncharacteristicly slipped the ball wide.

Oxford not content with just the one goal pushed to try and put the game beyond blues and it but for decent keeping and the woodwork they would have surely doubled there tally.

Southend were not only gettig dominated physically but tachtically and sturrock senior gave the word to revert to a 4-4-2 formation. The referee did award a few yellow cards to the oxford team and this meant that some of the challenges from then on were not so robust.

Southend just weeks ago would have capuitulated at losing the momentun so early on and the crowd would have seen fair course to jeer, but these are thankfully different times and the blues starting to change through the gears and the support was upped .

Its fair to say that a love affair with certain players has been easy whilst others have had to walk the plank . I am ofcourse i am talking bilel and the likes of sturrock junior, but maybe even that tide is turning and i was delighted to see blair get a standing ovation which has been a long tim in the making.

As for bilel is it possible for him to do any wrong? Another goal another comical yet dominant display and we find out that he does speak english after all. Is there no end to his talents and what will the blue voice do now this language revelation has been revealed.

Special mention for Ryan hall who when at his best is almost unplayable . He scored a goal from nothing and ripped the oxford backline to shreds.

On to the ratings

Evans 7 : Was solid and made a great save to prevent a 2-0 scoreline and was unfortunate with the goal he coceded as it look to go through his legs.

Clohessy 6.5 : Not seans best performance and he was not able to get forward as much as normal. Worked hard to contain oxford down his flank , but his crosses were not the best .

Barker 7.5 : Solid solid solid. The ultimate pro. A much better footballer than league 2 and an integral part of what we are trying to achieve. Makes defending look easy , which it isnt!

Bilel 8 : Aside from a few comical moments he was his usual self. Popping up everywhere and win headers he has no right to . He scored the match winner and is becoming a cult figure in the shortest of time.

Gilbert 8 : I have not been the biggest of gilberts fans along with a few others , but i thought he had a great game last night both in defending and attacking. Its clear that confidence levels had been knocked by criticsism , but he answered that in the best possible way by pushing high up the field playing the ball short and whipping in some great deliveries. Hope the injury is not too serious as that performance has been a long time coming.

Hall 8 : Wow . This boy has a lot of tricks in his locker and boy is he pacey. When he runs at players time and again they simply get bypassed or resort in fouling in and around the box . His goal had quality about it . A couple of keepy ups followed by a tame shot that was so accurate that it simply beat the keepers dispairing dive. The frightening thing is there is more to come and with a bit more calmness infront of goal he will score a shed load more for blues.

Easton 7.5 : Does what a captain should . Gets all over the pitch trying to encourage movement in others and offering them support. Had a few dodgy passes last night in amongst some great ones . Would just like to see craig get more assists and shots on goal.

Grant 7.5 : Much the same as the captain , but does make forays foward and has great feet which unfortunately makes him surely our most fouled player. From where i was sitting it did look like a yellow card , but there player saw red and the ref was better placed. He also encouraged gilbert to push up and get involved in attack which is something i hope to see more of. Not sure about keep ball in the final third though granty, especially when players were open infront of goal.

Ferdinand 8.5 MOM : This boy is as promising it gets at this level. Is he really 18? He plays like he has been playing for years and has the body of someone much older. I would love to know what his pass completion ratio is (stattos) because he does all the simple stuff by winning the ball and just simply plays it to feet. Never plays a long ball and never tries the eye of the needle stuff. As a sweeper and protector you will not find a player better in this league. He will not go unnoticed for long and surely he will be the one we are trying to hold onto. As an aside i did see a little bit more of running with the ball last night and i think it could be that kanes confidence is starting to peak. Keep it up Kane , its no coincidence that since you came in we are winning games.

Corr 6.5 : I am a big fan of barry and think he will hit 15 in the league this season and should have gone a step closer to that tally last night. Not only did he miss a sitter but he wasted good position and chances by shooting when pass was the option and passing when shoot was the option. That aside he worked hard and was really roughed up by the oxford back line. Barry is a good striker at this level and it wont be long before he is back amongst the headlines.

Sturrock jnr 8 : I hope people are finally starting to see what blair brings to the table. He wont score more than a handful of goals but he will work hard for this team and he has a brain which is top drawer in the lower leagues. His hold up play and some of his passing range is a joy to watch . Ok not all of it comes off and yes he does miss the odd chance , but if he didnt he would be a championship player. Great all round game last night and shows why he is in the team.

Sturrock senior 8.5 : Now we are starting to see how has won so many promotions. The team are gelling and he isnt afraid to ruffle feathers or try new things. I am a huge tilson fan and always will be , but would steve go 4-3-3 and would steve have changed it if it wasnt working . Would the likes of ferdinand be getting the games he has. Sturrock has the experience and calmness to get us out this league. You are winnig me round sir and im not alone in that sentiment.

TBV 7 : Not as loud as they have been and its nice to see a few more people in there. It does help having an away following to banter and credit for not jumping on players backs at 1-0 down and merely encouraging.

Bring on shrewsbury...

Obviously not his best game for us but he wasn't that bad either. I thought he was always putting pressure on their defence; he won vital corners with good close control (one of which won us the match) and won free-kicks, although not quite so many as usual. Similarly Ferdinand was very decent, but 9 out of 10? Not for me. Take away your two extremes and I'd not disagree that much:

I've taken marks off for his attitude, especially to young players like Ferdinand and Hall. As he was played along the left in the second half I got to see/hear a lot of what was being said, and he really did berate Hall at one point for passing to Clohessy on the overlap, who had no marker, instead of passing to Grant, which would've had to go past two defenders to get to him.

I can understand Grant wanting the ball, and I can understand the frustration at being switched out of position, but it shouldn't cause that much of an attitude shift... it was like a polar opposite that descended in the blink of an eye. Testament to Easton for having a word with him to calm him down.

Already on the case fella!

I actually think that Constable looked very sharp last night and might have done some serious damage to us had the defence not been switched on!

I did say earlier in my post that they looked lively, first 20 in particular. This comment referred to their constant berating of the ref, Lino and their niggly fouls throughout. Their personalities not their football

Evans 6 Not too confident in dealing with corners into 6 yard box
Clohessy 6.5 Struggled a little defensively
Gilbert 8.5 Much more positive in defence and attack
Mohsni 8 Great in the air but a bit rash at times
Barker 8.5 Very assured
Easton 8.5 Tremendous work rate and better distribution
Ferdinand 8.5 Very good tackling and covering effective simple passing
Grant 7.5 Held ball well until ambitious shots gave Oxford the chance to attack
Hall 9 Not just our best attacker but defended well at times
Sturrock 7.5 Worked hard holding up ball and finding many good passes Spread the play.
Corr 7 Another hardworking performance even chasing to defend

Subs

Herd 4.5 On long enough to show weakness in defence and ball retention
Sawyer and Crawford not enough time to rate

I think Gilbert's been playing like that most of this season. He maybe showed a little bit more going forward which maybe caught the eye, but he's been fairly sound defensively most of this year. I can't help think that the improvement in his marks is because we got a chance for a direct comparison between him and Herd.

Seriously? I don't think it's anything to do with Herd. Gilbert has been poor all season, his all round game has not been good enough. He has been caught out on countless occassions and has had no idea how to pass a ball and 99% of the time reverts to 'hoofing it'!

Last night it was like seeing a different player altogether - but he has been poor up until the last couple of games.

No the improvement in marks reflects the substantial upturn in his overall game over the last two matches. Up 'til then I was wondering why on earth Northampton were upset to lose him.

Gilbert has been pretty solid defensively all season, which is what his job is primarily about.

Agree that he hoofs it too much. However it's preferable to hoof than to give it away, which is what Herd did with his first six touches of the ball.

Yes, in last nights game - but overall Gilbert has been the weakest link in our defence all season.

The stats don't tend to give that argument any substance...

Football is not all about stats - it's also about opinions, personally I agree with Travelling Blue.

Lovely quote about statistics:

Do not put your faith in what statistics say until you have carefully considered what they do not say. ~William W. Watt

Gilbert played well at Stevenage until he was sent off. Apart from that I always wondered why he was such a favourite at Northampton. His positioning was poor, his distribution was poor, and he seemed to want to argue with everyone.

However, last night he was steady and dependable, and a season of performances like that will see him go up in fans estimations a lot. As for Herd, yes, we had the chance for a comparison and all I can say is that there wasn't one.

Well, you could argue that football is mainly a results business, and we've been getting far more of them with Gilbert at the back than we have without him.

Well I must be seeing different games to most people. We were poor at Barnet and would have been punished against a better side and last night we were equally poor first half and only the goals redeemed the performance. Admittedly second half we were better but that was when we kept the ball down more. Hall is very good but maybe becoming overconfident as there were times a pass was better option to the shots he took. Equally Grant, a realy good player, chose the shot over the pass several times when clearly the pass was preferable. We created enough second half to at least have scored another couple and so were wasteful in spurning the opportunities. I keep hearing how the sides home confidence was affected by the crowd, well they must have taken that problem to barnet. I could not rate any player last night as higher than a 5 as playing for half the game does not warrant it. No I take that back. Barker and Ferdinand were at the races all game. I know this division is poor but if we truly entertain play off hopes then huge improvement is required and a wave of euphoria is not enough.

I haven't commented on last nights game yet and missed Barnet unfortunately but I make you not far off mate.

Confidence is probably the most important factor in the way a player performs and we are starting to show as a side that we can mix it and get results. If we keep this up for another month then I fully expect us to be tearing teams to pieces in March... but it's not happening yet.

Last night for the first 10 mins I thought we were the better side and could have been 2-0 up. Then they started to get a foothold and their goal wasn't a complete surprise. For the next 20 mins we were under the cosh quite a bit, didn't have a sniff at goal and then all of a sudden we started to knock the ball about (I guess this co-incided with the change to 4-4-2).

Hall's goal came out of nothing but you could sense the momentum we had and for once we scored again when we were on top. If the half had gone on another 5 mins we'd have got another one and Oxford were really on the ropes.

I thought in the second half we started well but Oxford were awful in their distribution and kept giving it to Hall. We didn't threaten much which was a shame because I felt we needed the third. After the sending off however we somehow found ourselves on the back foot when we should have tried to kill the game off instead of taking it into the corner for the last 10 minutes. I know it's professional etc. etc. but I hate that. Ok with a couple of minutes to go but not when we start doing it! Go for the kill! We don't have to throw players forward unecessarily... just try and find a blue shirt!

I feel a 5's are a bit harsh because I feel we had good performances full of character from everyone against a decent side. We also came back from behind to win for the first time for God knows how long which says something. But equally we're not the finished article yet and Shrewsbury will be a toughie. But they say the sign of a good side is when you can win without playing well. I'll take that.

Evans - 6
Clohessy - 6
Gilbert - 8
Barker -
Mohsni - 7
Hall - 9 - MOM
Ferdinand - 8
Easton - 8
Grant - 6.5
Sturrock - 7
Corr - 6

Subs -

Herd - 4
Sawyer and Crawford - not on long enough to mark. I didn't see either touch the ball more than once!

Think you hit the nail on the head there. We didnt play badly we were extremely wasteful and on another night would have increased our tally significantly.

The fact that we didnt hit top gear but made oxford who are a good team in this division chase shadows at times shows we have the quality to move into the promotion picture.

I actually thought that for a half an hour period we played the best we had all season. The passing and movement both on and off the ball was top draw.

As i have said oxford are no mugs so part of our poor play as you put it might just in some part be credit to them for having a real go. Football is a game of two halves . They had 30 mins of the first half and and us 15 mins and vice versa in the second.

Im happy with the performance and more importantly the 3 points.

Didnt think we were amazing but we got the job done and thats all you can ask.

Positives.

Hall is looking every bit the creative dangerman we needed and is now integral for the side, Moshni again delivers above what is expected both at the back and upfront. Ferdinand simply oozes class in a simple and calm way. I thought Barker was superb once again and even Easton who im not a massive fan of looked assured. Blair was good from start to finish and Evans looked solid in unspectacular.

Negatives.

Clohessy for my mind is really not great. He cannot seem to get a decent cross in and I feel all to often his sole idea is to get his head down and motor down the line which rarely works. Gilbert was better than he has been but is still in my book a really poor defender. I cant help but think we would be a better side with say Phillips in the middle and Barker at left back. Finally Jonny Herd - I loved him as a player but he was dire last night and I really think the writing is on the wall. He gave the ball away in dangerous places by over playing. Sorry Jon mate but I feel your days are marked.

Corr I also felt worked so hard but got little reward. Not his fault but this new formation leaves him a little isolated at times.

Superb performance tonight from what is looking a very good side. I remember sitting head in hands at Stevenage a month or two back when we were behind and we really looked clueless, but what a transformation. Some key players back like Mohsni, Easton and Barker, and finding Ferdinand have really moved us on a level.

Oxford are a good side, and we made them look pretty dreadful at times tonight. We didnt start well but we gradually got into the game, and fully deserved the win in the end. Some smartarse mate of mine (Torquay fan) texted me after Constable scored with the words Ello Ello Ello. In two first half minutes that shut him up, and Hereford went on to win at Plainmoor - happy days :)

Evans - 6 - slow off his line tonight and looked shaky to me. looking forward to the return of Morris
Clohessy - 7 - Did well tonight bombing forward and rarely beaten at the back. Good solid full back
Gilbert - 8 - Another sterling performance, and shame to see him go off at the end. Didnt he hit the bar before the goal?
Mohsni - 8 - A few shakey moments but generally won most in the air at the back when needed, and some timely tackles.... oh and the winner. Legend
Barker - 9 - Majestic performance and bossed the back line. Great bit of business
Easton - 8 - Worked his socks off tonight against a good side and drove us forward in the middle
Grant - 8 - Real leader on the pitch tonight, especially in the second half - proper pro
Ferdinand - 9 - Class act for his age. Not just getting in the team - but nailing down his place. Lee who?
Hall - 9 - Wonderful goal and a wonderful game. Just getting more and more confident. Could well be Hall who is worth big money at end of season
Sturrock - 6 - Held ball up well but not as effective as other games. Finishing is truly lethargic at times. Respect to him - he is winning booboys over
Corr - 7 - worked hard without really troubling them tonight, but it was effective

Herd - 5 - worries me immensely. I think he might get released at the end of the season. Defensively too small at this level
Crawford - 5 - didnt really have much time to do anything
Sawyer - 5 - use up time sub

Ref - 7 - Did ok although think the red card was slightly harsh - right in front of me and seen much worse

Ive pm'd you!
