Good to get the 3 points, had a dodge 5 mins in the first half and the last 20 was awful to be honest, you would have thought we had ten men not them.

Ferdinand was outstanding, easily motm for me.

Thought Moshni, Barker, Hall, Sturrock and Gilbert played well.

Corr and Grant were disappointing plus Johnny Herd is a little boy lost, will be amazed if he gets another contract.

was working so missed the game, but cracking result! seems like the spirit is there, and as we all know this kind of spirit and confidence and winning mentality can transfer an average squad into contenders.
long may it continue :)

Sorry, your humour was wasted on me. Tonight was great, good football, good movement. Ferdinand is a gem, he does the simple stuff and lets Easton free to do his thing. Ferdinand is a find and a half.

Fully agree, happy for all the talk yesterday being about Moshni and Grant, and now Hall being praised; that, hopefully means that Ferdinand is being allowed to bed in nicely with little pressure, for me he looks the real deal.

Sometimes wonder about some of our supporters though. Guy in front of me reckons that Ferdinand is absolute pants and can't see how he's getting in the side.........

Not able to make the game listened on radio sounded good. I think the players are starting to gel. The team spirit was clear when you listened to Moshni at the end in his interview.
Well done!

First 20 minutes we were pretty poor - Oxford got a deserved lead. Constable & Craddock caused all sorts of problems. Blair was completely lost playing wide left.

Then we switched to 4-4-2 and looked the better team, Blair really started to get involved up top - dropping into the hole and dictating play. Saying that, his shooting wasn't great. Hall was fantastic and his goal really helped drive us on. Well played to Grant too, who did a good job playing wide left.

Second half I was disappointed that we didn't create a bit more. When Oxford went down to 10-men and went 3 at the back - I would have loved to switch the wingers to get them on their natural feet as all the space was out wide.

Special mention to Ferdinand who won so many balls in the second half in particular. Well done son. Gilbert too -his best game by a country mile.

Also, I note from defending corners - I love the way Bilel doesn't have anyone to mark - he is free to attack the ball. Great idea when you have a player like him who attacks everything and heads it for miles. Probably to enable us to do this we sacrifice leaving a player on the halfway line though, which is a shame.

Oh - and weren't Craddock & Contstable complete ******s?

Just thought I would mention it.... thats 14 straight league games where we havent failed to score... thats impressive in itself

I actually think that Constable looked very sharp last night and might have done some serious damage to us had the defence not been switched on!

Got to say I have not taken to Mr Sturrock since his arrival, however the transformation in the team since the departure of Mr Widdrington is just monumental!! What impressed me last night, and not for the first time in the last few games, was that seeing that we were taking a bit of a pasting after twenty minutes he changed it to 4-4-2 - this made all the difference.

Fantastic all round team performance and three very, very welcome points.

One point of not particularly good news, I was told at the game last night that none of the Staff and some of the players still have not been paid for January - I hope this is not the case.

Evans........6 Did what he had to do
Clohessy....6 Solid but quieter game
Gilbert.......7 Without doubt his best game for us by miles
Mohsni......7 He really does love it!!
Barker.......8 MOTM easily the best football player on the park
Easton.......7 Battler
Ferdinand..7 Does everything simple, has a great future.
Grant........6 Quieter game, but effective
Hall...........8 His goal definitely changed the game, most improved for me.
Sturrock....6 Worked hard again, but his finishing...................???
Corr..........6 Again worked hard, should have scored in the first minute.

Subs : Herd 6 I like Johnny, battles
Crawford 6 not enough time
Sawyer 6 not enough time

Thought PS change to 442 won us the game. Corr should have come off for Crawford as he was blowing.

Fans were incredible again 10/10

very , very impressive last night
Gilbert had his best ever game and didn't look like the weak link in defence unfortunatley Herd did when he came on and was out muscled almost immediately
Disappointing that we couldn't get the third goal, as we were very close to thowing it away at the end, you would have thought we were the team with 10 men!

someone said we have now scored in 14 games on the trot, our goals against also looks OK compared to the teams above us

One or two observations and a slightly different perspective, from afar.
I'll start with a little concern.............Coughlan off at Barnet with a hamstring problem............Gilbert off last night with a groin problem. This is somewhat countered by the enthusiasm and confidence that is flowing through the side at the moment, so we may be able to fill in and cover more easily at the moment but.............depending on how serious both injuries are............perhaps PS's first dip into the loan market next week will be to arrange some temporary defense cover?
This was clearly a better performance and result than the one I was priveleged to see last week........I don't think it could be said that Macclesfield were in the same class as Oxford. It sounded that we had problems during the first period and PS admitted that he got the formation wrong at the start, when we changed to the trad 4-4-2 things improved. One of the most encouraging things from last night was that, while the usual suspects (Grant, Barker, Easton, Mohsni etc), all played well, it was the steadily maturing progress of Ferdinand and the vertiginous advances made by Hall and Gilbert over the last few games, that have really caught the eye.
I would spare a thought for Lee Sawyer, it's at this time his new maturity needs to show through, when he must be thinking what on earth he has to do to get into the side. He needs to keep his head down and continue working hard, whether it be in training or in the reserves..........his chance will come, he needs to remain patient and be sure to grab the opportunity when it arises.
Finally, I have to say that I am starting to get a bit pis**d-off with some posters on here and Bilel Mohsni in particular, who keep on mentioning the aim of getting to the play-offs. Honestly......................................................................................................who the F**K wants to get involved in the lottery that is the play-offs????? We are five points off third place..........can the person who is tutoring Bilel in English add a couple of words to his vocabulary..........

AUTOMATIC PROMOTION!

Loving the support last night moving down the front was nothing short of a master stroke!

Starting to look forward to more home games now!

Roll on Saturday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a tribute to Oxford's number 2 Batt. Absolutely useless the whole game, did nothing right nothing good or nearly right. He then gets sent off, what a hero!

A special score for him of 2. 1 point for putting his kit on, 1 point for not arguing that much when he got sent off!

great three points last night, the players added something new last night for me...CHARACTER. Missing chances either side of conceding a soft, soft goal...what did they do? Go into their shell...play hoof ball....hell no....got the ball down on the deck and played FOOTBALL. The midfield looks better and better each week, the short passing of Easton, Ferdinand & Grant is a joy to watch...football is such a simple game but also great to watch when it is played like this (also they had 90 minutes in the tank now...fitness levels have definitely increased recently). Hall is just ooooozing confidence and he is fast become a player that you get half out of your seat when he even get's near the ball (that left leg of his is great, especially in front of goal now). I have liked Blair (opps) Sturrock all season but the way he looks up and picks out a man is very good, he's adding long balls to switch the play as well. A few nerves at the end (with Herd coming on) but Moshi was immense at the end, his command of the box under high balls is fantastic.

All players get a 9 for me and PS an 11. Great support from the fans tonight...this is the benchmark now (best performance of the season for me for so many reasons other than the scoreline). Sturrock will make sure that they have there feet well planted on the ground...play like that then we do any a chance of promotion, more importantly play like that and don't win games and you will not hear a negative word of me.

Can't wait for Saturday

I'm sure he's been doing it in his head.............but probably content that Blair is out there doing it on the pitch. :winking:

Excellent summary. Nice to see someone that doesn't automatically dish out 8's, 9's and 10's to the entire team just because we win. Appreciate that some players contribute by doing their jobs and not excelling, and some still struggle and are supported/carried by the better performing players on that particular day - i.e. a team performance.

It's very difficult to praise the players and enjoy the win without getting carried away, I think you've caught the balance well here.

Roll on Saturday, and let's hope the non-payment of wages rumour is just that - a rumour.

A professional performance last night if ever I saw one. Resolute at the back, dominant in midfield and fairly impressive going forward. After a dodgy first 20 minutes where Oxford came flying out of the traps, I thought we asserted ourselves very well and mounted a confident level of pressure without ever looking to rush the play. This is something I've thought for the last two months or so, we've looked far more confident and assured when in possession and I wonder if this might be Widdrington's dismissal, us hitting some form or a combination of both. When Widdrington was here we always looked in a hurry to score and certain players were prone to the odd panic and lashing the ball forward with little thought or direction.

Stand out performers for me were Mohsni, Gilbert, Ferdinand and Hall, and with the exception of the much-improved Gilbert, those three are beginning to look like a consistent trio pivotal to our success.

I can't wax lyrical enough about Ferdinand (thankfully, he justified my programme notes), He really does look a prospect. Comfortable on the ball, hugely experienced without it and I think I counted three misplaced passes all night out of around 40 he attempted. He's been a major focal point of our recent improvement because the defensive aspects be brings to the table allows Easton to push further forward and impose himself on the game. This new 433/451 tactic suits the pair of them perfectly, and it's great testament to Sturrock for having the balls to change the system to accomodate a youth player.

Hally continues to impress. Now he's confident, he really is a player who takes some beating at this level and he'll run all night if you asked him to. Some of us were talking last night about how Hall has taken to the league in comparison to Scannell, and there really is no comparison. Hall was made for League football, Scannell, arguably, wasn't.

Some negatives, though. I'll start with Clohessy who, I thought, looked a little suspect last night. If you watch him, he has slight errors that experienced defenders can pick a mile off. When he's hugging the right touchline, he drops his right shoulder when he's about to move which instantly indicates his direction and intention... This also narrows his angle, allowing the defender to get tight to him knowing that he's only going one way. It's a symptom of not being at all confident on your left foot, and it's something that needs to be worked on. It's only a slight error, but one that will come to haunt him against better, more organised defenders. He was solid enough last night, though.

Now, onto Granty. Early on it became clear something was eating at him. Whenever anybody overlooked him for a pass, even if the ball to him was a Hollywood pass with a 10% success rate, he threw a tantrum and berated the player. At one point in the second half, Easton called him over and asked him "What's wrong?" and all Granty said was "I want the ball." Well, it's a team game Grant and you're not going to get the ball all the time. When he did get the ball, his only intention was to keep it as long as possible and look for goal... Whether he was tipped off about a scout in the crowd or he was just having a bad day, I couldn't say, but that was his worst game in a while for us purely down to how selfish/arrogant he was on the field. Simple fact is that, in this current tactic, he isn't as important to the team as he once was. He was even worse when Sturrock pushed him out wide to accomodate a change, and his attitude wouldn't have endeared himself to PS at all. Sometimes you will have to play out of position, that's football.

I actually thought that the Constable/Craddock partnership, particularly in the first half, looked pretty impressive. Their movement was great and Craddock always looked to get in behind Barker, knowing he could do him for pace. Evans done well to respond to these runs and claim the ball, but it definitely gave our defence something to think about it. Constable took his goal very well, and it was a well-taken free kick that they played around us. Their game is all about understanding, and Constable/Craddock have it in abundance... Definitely one of the more impressive forward lines I've seen this season (up there with the Richards/Richards of Vale).

Ratings:

Evans - 7 - Looked pretty sharp
Gilbert - 7 - Hope he's not out for too long, thought he was very impressive yesterday while Herd frightens the life out of me.
Mohsni - 8 - Massive
Barker - 7 - Caught for pace once or twice, but solid enough
Clohessy - 6 - Not as commanding as previously, but still good.
Ferdinand - 9 MOTM - Simply outstanding
Easton - 7.5 - Good performance dictating the tempo
Grant - 4.5 - Less of the sulking, less berating of your team mates, less selfish play and more looking up... Otherwise that move'll never happen.
Hall - 8 - Another great performance
Sturrock - 6 - Not quite there, but did enough.
Corr - 7 - Battled all night in keeping their back line deep while also proving a threat from set pieces.

Subs

Herd - 5 - Not on for long, but gave the ball away an awful lot and looks frighteningly short of where he should be.

Sawyer/Crawford not on long enough to mark.

Obviously not his best game for us but he wasn't that bad either. I thought he was always putting pressure on their defence; he won vital corners with good close control (one of which won us the match) and won free-kicks, although not quite so many as usual. Similarly Ferdinand was very decent, but 9 out of 10? Not for me. Take away your two extremes and I'd not disagree that much:

Ratings:

Evans - 6 - Okay
Gilbert - 7 - Two decent games in a row
Mohsni - 8 - A couple of lapses but generally towering performance
Barker - 7 - Ball watching a couple of times, but sound
Clohessy - 6 - Okay
Ferdinand - 8 Tidy performance; did little wrong
Easton - 6 - Okay
Grant - 6 - Not at his best
Hall - 8 - Continues to show great promise
Sturrock - 6 - Good in areas where it didn't matter, poor in front of goal
Corr - 7 - Set up winner -looked to be struggling towards the end and should perhaps have been substituted

Subs

Herd - 5 - Not great.

Sawyer/Crawford - n/a
