Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2-1 MK Dons

The other thing to savour from tonight was yet again the large amount of halfwits who left five minutes early (doing their usual superior trying to be first out to their car, avoiding the crowds etc)and therefore missed Barneys goal - i fail to understand why you would pay £20 to see a game but can't stay around for the duration - you'd have thought they would have learnt by now especially after Gillingham - it must be disheartening to the team to see large gaps of empty seats appearing late in the game..
end of rant!

That'd be me then, but i have to be at work at 10.00, so leaving when the board goes up means i get to stand up the back for a quick getaway, not missed a last minute goal yet though !!!

Although i did leave the Gillingham Cup game after Freedman missed from a yard, just too depressing to stay to the end....

Really wanted to be there tonight, but I had other committments to attend, which is rather unfourtunate. But when I found out we beat them, it completely made my evening!
3 pts will boost the confidence levels in the team, hopefully this can continue at Tranmere as well, and we can get another 3 pts as well!
UTB!

No, not end of rant, i will continue it. In the east stand we have to cross a few isles to get to an exit, you part time supporters cause many many people to miss, sometimes important action because you want to leave early, if you must leave early then go to the back and walk across, that way you disrupt the fewest supporters. If you don't want to come to a whole match then don't come at all. Tonight, especially tonight the team and the management put everything into your entertainment, at least stay and say thank you. Now if you don't agree with the above then why not just stay away, i am sure we can all manage without you. UTB. Well done lads.

Agreed.Personally I hate people leaving before the end of games WHATEVER the reason.

If people have to leave a few minutes early to be somewhere that they really have to be, then so be it. That's the long and short of it really. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to stay until 5 minutes after the final whistle before meandering out of the ground and home. I've had to scoot off 5 minutes early several times in order to get to work on time and avoid getting in trouble for being late. Deal with it!

Garbage. If someone has to leave early to get somewhere then they will, it doesn't make them any less of a fan than you, me, or Dagenham Kev. Missing important action? They're in your way for a few seconds, tops, and I know that I always coincide with me leaving for the bar at half time when the ball is out of play.

What does get my goat is the people who complain to me when I try and get past if I'm getting the drinks in at the bar at half time. You're. At. A. Football. Game. Not. An. Opera.

Fantastic game last night, good to see the team keep battling to the end. Shame Wimbledon didn't bring many fans but suppose they dont have many to start with??
Keep up the good work Tilly and come on Ron give Tilly some money to strenghten the squad!!

As always, there's predictable criticism aimed at particular players, and as usual, I struggle to understand it.

Mildy - 7, composed and in control, never doubted him all evening, has had massive confidence boost in recent games and it shows
Grant - 7, did he start at RB? Can't say I noticed till 2nd half, did what he's being asked to do at the moment, some good covering as well
Franno - 7, I guess he was put in the middle cos of Wilbraham's height, and oggy apart I never noticed him all evening so he must've done ok
Barrett - 8, kamikazee? No way! Captain's performance and commented on by one of the friends I was with, joke of a booking
Herd - 6, did some things superbly and others he was made to look vulnerable. Excellent long throws, need to concentrate on his weak areas though - positioning being one of them
Laurent - 8.5 MOTM was on a winner with me from the moment he walked over before the match, shook my hand and said "hello Kay"!!! In all seriousness though, this was Franny at his best, running at full tilt and causing havoc
Macca - 7.5, solid and creative. Why the criticism? Two pretty decent long range shots, one of which missed by very little, some very good passing, particularly to Moussa, Barney, Laurent and Scannell
Christophe - 7.5, wasn't surprised he got MotM, he was very much in evidence, good bustling, good challenging in the main (there was a dodgy one I thought he was in trouble for)
Moussa - 5, that's a couple of games in a row now where I've thought he's been poor - is this a ploy to keep him underneath the radars of others?
Freedman - 6.5, again harsh criticism, he never stopped running all evening and was making a real nuisance of himself. We have to get over the fact he used to score goals - that's NOT what he's here for any more
Barney - 7.5, saw absolutely nothing wrong with the goal just before the pen, never offside in a million years. He's so strong now, and it was a priviledge for me to have him as my first Player of the Month presentation

Sub: Scannell for Dougie - 7, right sub at the right time, came on and caused problems with his pace

Ref: 3, he did get some stuff right, but ohmigod, didn't he get a lot wrong?! Bit of a farce in the end, kept expecting him to drop his trousers in a "oh matron" kind of way!

Crowd: low on numbers, but big in heart. Well done everyone for getting behind them when it mattered and huge congratulations to Steve Tilson for celebrating his 6th anniversary in charge so well!

Finally, the players' walkround - how can you doubt the passion and how much it means to them? This is what makes it all worth coming, yet still some of them went straight off.......why?!

Doogie never stopped running?? He never started!
Maccas shots were close as in they didnt acually fly out into the car park this time?

Here goes... on the whole it was an entertaining game, and a good (but unexpected) result! Was expecting much better from MK Franchise, they werent that good and we made look better because we gave the ball away so much! On the up-side, both teams at least tried to play some decent football, which was mainly interrupted by the **** with the whistle!!

Mildenhall 7 Getting better and better as time goes on. Looked solid - let down by some terrible defending, which is probably only to be expected under the circumstances!

Francis 7 Out of position and spent the whole game looking lost! I understand totally why he was there (height against Franchise's tall strikers) but think Grant would have been a more solid option at CB.

Barrett 7.5 Usual commitment from AB, no complaints!

Grant 7.5 Completely out of position! Not one of his better games in defence it has to be said, he is definately better in the middle - he is becoming a credible CB despite being a midfielder! However, cant fault his commitment and he got the job done. fast becoming a favourite player for me!

Herd 7 Inexperience showed at times, but getting better. Made good use of his long throws and free kicks tonight. Good to have 2 players on the pitch with decent dead ball delivery. We will have a decent first team LB by the end of this season I believe.

Laurent 8.5 I love laurant - definately our most creative player! He ran rings round their defence and caused them no end of trouble. Final ball a bit iffy still at times, but a real find! My MOM, for entertainment value as much as anything!

Macca 8 Seems to be getting back to his old self again. Still got a tendency to launch his 'shots' skyward!

JFC 8 Looks good. As I have said before, doing a really good job when no-one notices he's there and think he's doing nothing. Solid and boring but very strong and reads the game well. Shame the goal has been credited as an OG - thought he deserved it!

Moussa 6.5 Out of sorts today. Not one of his better games.

Barnard 7 ran around a lot, picked up a pointless booking, and was completely ineffective until the penalty. Again, well taken pen - maintaining his record! Will be our saviour this season, cos I cant see where any goals would come from without him.

Freedman 7 Wasnt there for his playing abilities, we needed that footballing brain and experience on the pitch - so he did his job really well. He was marshalling the troops when the ref went all card-happy and lost control in the first half, and I think he managed to keep barney and macca out of more trouble with the ref! Think Doogie was about the only player who didnt get booked!

Subs
Scannell 7.5 Brought some more creativity to the team in the second half and although it didnt come off properly, he was opening up gaps in the defence with his speed.

Ref - off the scale! How many more games can officials almost ruin this season? Lost cound how many times the yellow card came out - better in the secnd half - did he lose his pencil??

Lino's - one redeemed himself by giving the penalty... some weird offside decisions as well.

Laurent - 8.5 MOTM was on a winner with me from the moment he walked over before the match, shook my hand and said "hello Kay"!!! In all seriousness though, this was Franny at his best, running at full tilt and causing havoc

Thats because the whole squad had a meeting recently about stalkers and how you must be nice to them but not over friendly, your name was mentioned as a definate stalker and extereme caution should be observed ;)

You have your prejudices meaning you notice the negatives, try putting a positive spin on things and look for the good for a change.

While I agree that Macca's performance was much better last night, he could well have been sent off for slapping Baldock, one of the many things Deadman missed. I've always liked Macca but with the paucity of our squad he has to cut this petulance out as wecan't afford to have any player facing a 3 match ban.

Freedman - 6.5, again harsh criticism, he never stopped running all evening and was making a real nuisance of himself. We have to get over the fact he used to score goals - that's NOT what he's here for any more

Sorry Kay, but i fail to understand HOW you can continually defend this guy. He is a striker yes? Then surely he gets paid to score goals. If he's here just for the "coaching the younger players" role, then pay him coach's wages, and let him work behind the scenes. His wages could go on one or two decent young strikers who WILL put the ball in the back of the net.
Over the last few months more and more people are realising that he is quite useless these days. He simply cannot cut it anymore unfortunatley.
What i find quite worrying, if Roy Keane was there scouting Barny last night, and decides to nick him come January time, then we are left with Walker, Freedman and Scannell. Oh and a few youth team players. :(

I would defend Freedman but it's Barnard who is left to attempt every knock-on and header - in my view if Freedmans not scoring there that's what he should be there for.

Barnard got another booking doing exactly that and so Dougies got to sort it out

Laurent was outstanding - he made their ginger captain look a complete idiot all night

Roy Keane was there scouting Barney...only good news is he left 15mins from time so missed his goal :)

Result mattered more than the performance which wasnt great, dont think Gueret had to make a single save.
First half we were poor, MK dons couldve had 3 or 4 with better finishing. Both their wingers were getting the better of our full backs.
Second half much better, worked much harder and started getting more balls in the box.
Ref was poor for BOTH sides, shame about Grant as he has been excellent in a variety of positions.
Two biggest disappointments were Doogie (for the umpteenth time) and Macca whos passing and shooting left much to be desired.
Saying that with only 3 fit defenders and 14 fit professionals, a fantastic result.

Mildey- 6, not much to do but did it fine.
Francis-6, poor first half, got better in 2nd half.
Barrett- 7, typical AB, threw himself into everything.
Grant-7, been really solid wherever he has played across the back.
Herd- 7, a few dodgy moments, but 2nd half thought he was superb.
Laurent- 7, only player capable of taking players on, but must improve final ball.
Macca-5, poor passing and shooting, plays 2 bad passes for every good pass.
JEff- 6, not sure why MOTM, wasnt his goal and he gave ball away a lot.
Moose- out of form but no one to put pressure on his place. Did improve 2nd half.
Doogie- 5, anonymous, barely broke sweat. Must be enjoying his £3k a week.
Barney- 6, cool as you like for penalty, didnt get much joy from their big centre backs.

Fairly good ratings.

Thought we battled really well for the whole 90 minutes. I said to my Dad with about 15 minutes to go that, the whole team looked absolutely dead. Understandably of course. Just shows how professional they are, trouble with wages, lack of players but still battling 'til the very end week in week out.

Laurent, was amazing tonight, I think partly because his actually very skilled, and partly because his an unknown player to most defenders in the league. I'm sure when they look at the team sheet, Laurent is the last person they would be worried about, more concerned with Freedman and Barnard.

Freedman, what to say? Can't add much to what's been put on here for the past few weeks. Was his performance worth £3,000? No. Even if he adds valuable experience to the side, his wages cannot be justified. As soon as he is gone it'll be a huge weight of our shoulders.

Would like to see Walker start next weekend, or perhaps Scannell again, who looks quite lively. Just felt that tonight we really looked dangerous when running at MK, Laurent proved this. Whilst Walker is liable to a frustrating slip or miss pass- he can run at people, and deliver a bit of magic when required.

Okay, Ratings.

Mildenhall- Didn't have much to do. Saved well from Puncheon in the first half, some good catches and did the basic's well. Another solid performance. 7

Grant- At times looked shakey, but on the whole did his job well. Good tackling in the second half. 7

Barrett- Personally think that right now, his the most important player we have. Passionate, committed, determined- he gives absolutely everything. Won his headers, battled well against some very good MK strikers and put everything on the line for the team. 8

Francis- Some good passing, did his job but from where I was, seemed to be part at fault for the first goal. 6

Herd- Some very shakey moments, and his lack of a right foot is a huge worry. I thought that to make it as a pro now days you had to be able to at least use your weaker foot at the most crucial times? Don't get me wrong, his young and being called on when not 100% fit, so no big criticism of Johnny. Generally doing a good job, just when it's on his right foot- I worry. 6

Laurent- As covered above, he was brilliant. Full of running, turns and tricks. Played some nice one two's as well. Very talented player and was my man of the match. 8

JFC- Started poorly. Some misplaced passes and sloppy control. Also thought he got muscled off the ball easily which is strange considering his size. Got the 'goal' which from where I was, clearly came off the defender. Thought he has, like most of the players, a better second half. 6

McCormack- Thought he was quite good. Managed not to get booked but still battled well. Wish he'd rediscover the fire he had from two-three years ago. He still has good pace, just wish he would use it more. With Barney and Freedman up front, we don't have the fastest frontline. But we do have pace in midfield, Laurent, McCormack and Moussa. Let JFC cover while you get forward Macca! And please please please, work on your shooting. 7

Moussa- Has such good control of the ball. Mildenhall targeted him a few times with long balls and he managed to control them and get the ball moving again. Not the best I've seen him play but he was very good. Such a bright talent. 7.

Freedman- Could say everything that's wrong with Dougie, but it's been done and I've sort of covered it in the above. Too old and over paid. 5

Barnard- Full of effort. Think he's actually looking better and better each time I see him. When he first signed for us (3 years ago?) I thought he was too lightweight, lacked much pace etc etc. But he's really developed into a complete striker. Showed how clinical he really is with the two off-side goals. Needs more service but he got the goal that his effort deserved. 7

Subs

Scannell- Looked fairly lively. Held it up and made runs behind their defence, injecting some much needed pace. Useful player. 6

------------

Overall- Pleased I came back from Uni to see this one. Was gutted I missed the Gillingham match but this went some way to making up for it.

Well done you Super Bluessssss.

Do we know Freedman is on £3k a week ?!

I to would like to see Walker or Scannell start next week though, I thought Scannell looked lively when he came on last night and gave us a bit of much needed pace up top, looked like he'd lost a few pounds aswell.

Laurent - 8.5 MOTM was on a winner with me from the moment he walked over before the match, shook my hand and said "hello Kay"!!!

And not forgetting just before that Macca walking past you and not even making eye contact!!

;)
