Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1, Rotherham United 1

Generous mark for Britt.

I would have said very generous!!!

Personally thought he was our worse player on the park and I only recall him doing one decent thing and that was at the end of the first half. We can't keep starting with a striker that has only scored 1 goal in 14 games, so its time we gave Harris or Eastwood a run in the side.

At least when Tomlin wasn't scoring he was still causing problems for the opposition and creating chances (think it's showing how much we miss him!!), but Britt isn't even doing that.

Possibly, I thought he worked very hard and had good movement, Rotherham's defence were just able to deal with him quite easily. I thought there were certainly a couple of occasions where he won free kicks for us in the 1st half where he was fouled outside the box. There was also some good interaction between him, Leonard and Clohessy.

I thought it was a decent performance, just sooooooo frustrating conceding at the end.

Smith 7...Looked much better today. Was calling more, claimed crosses and made a couple of good saves.

Clohessy...6.5 Typical Sean performance
Cresswell....7 Did ok. Had an awkward customer
Prosser...7 Ditto
Straker...6 Average, but quicker than Barker
Leonard...7.5 No frills, just did his job very well
Hurst...7 Flitted in and out of the game. Cracking goal
Lund...6.5 Battled hard
Mayor...6 Looked pacey, but got pushed off the ball far too often.
Mohsni...7.5 MOTM Would I have brought him back to the club ? No. Was he the best player on the pitch ? Yes.
Assombalonga...7 Can't understand the Britt bashing. Worked hard. Had v.little change from their CB's

Be interested to know what those of you that "officiate" thought of the booking of Assombalonga for hand ball? I thought it was really harsh myself, but I realise that's possibly down to my impartiality!

Agree with the general views of the game on here (I.e. discounting for the odd comment which suggests a different game was being watched).
Thought Mohsni was great and as well as what he contributed on the pitch there was a lift in the crowd when he touched the ball.

Reflections on his performance in a bit more detail:

Positives

You wouldn't know he had played so little football this year, full of running and stamina
Played some really simple football as well as some skilful touches
I think he scares the opposition, lots of nerves as he was charging towards them
Won so much in the air, not just with flicks but purposeful headers
Willing to put his hand up for the goal

Less positive

His enthusiasm means he sometimes gets in others way (recall one where he took the ball from Cresswell's head)
I thought he came a bit deep at times leading me to wonder if he might be worth playing in CM at the moment with Lund holding as he looked composed when deeper but we then lost the outlet up top

Whether or not we needed to make a change, I do agree that bring Fred on for 3 mins again doesn't do anyone any good and playing BBBC in midfield was somewhat random.

Let's hope Laird and Tomlin are back soon! If the rumours about the return of Tam are true, a midfield of:

Mohsni-Laird-Tam-Hurst

and then Britt and Tomlin up front is as good a midfield and attack that you'll find in this division.

What a crap game, going nowhere until Hurst scored the lack of subsitutions was really frustrating Sturrock seemed happy with the 0-0! A point was probably a fair result in the end.

I assumed that the booking was for time-wasting; Britt had the impudence to hit the ball in direction of goal after the whistle, and you really shouldn't be doing this with that kind of I-am-the-one-who-must-be-noticed refs

It was the shot at goal he was booked for after the whistle had gone, not the handball.

Saddest thing from me was the cheering every time Smith caught the ball.

And did the 3 minutes extra include the amount of time the ref took to lecture players ets?

Just slow mo'd their goal a few times. What a mess. Mohsni said elsewhere that he called for it. He misses, it goes over his head. Cresswell takes a wild swing to welly it, and misses the ball. Smith tries to welly it, not only misses, but falls to the ground, Mullins hooks the ball back across goal, and Mohsni heads it in.

Never seen so many mistakes in about 4 Seconds.

I'll have to take a look at that in slow mo. My Marks out Ten may change, soon....lol

Another boring, depressing home display in league 2 apart from Hursts fantastic goal.

Britt was booked for kicking the ball away after the free kick was given against him I thought. The same offence was committed by one of their centre half's midway through the first half but the ref merely told him to calm down :stunned:
The same defender was then booked in the second half after a final warning for multiple fouls committed.

Smith - 6 - annoyingly wasteful with his kicking and such a better keeper when he punches/crosses. Couple of decent saves
Clohessy - 6 - even one of most consistent players seems to be off form a touch in the last couple of games.
Cresswell - 7 - pretty dominant performance (mom)
Prosser - 7 - as per Cresswell, a good partnership against big centre forwards
Straker - 5 - as much as I want him to succeed he continues to show little. Too many occasions where easy ball failed
Leonard - 6 - average from Ryan
Hurst - 6 - great goal apart he struggled to come to terms with centre midfield position
Lund - 6 - allowed the Rotherham midfield too much time and space
Mayor - 6 - looks good when running at defenders but little end product
Mohsni - 7 - lots of energy and great ball to Britt to create chance in first half
Assombalonga - 6 - falls over too much and wasteful of possession, apart from chance in first half he had little else to feed on

Corr - 6 - not sure of his centre midfield role (me and him it seemed)
Eastwood - not on long enough

Ref - 6 - inconsistent decisions. Lund rightly booked for late tackle but similar challenge by Rotherham player unpunished. Britt booked for unsporting behaviour but again similar offence by Rotherham player allowed. Why were Rotherham players that received attention for head injuries allowed to stay on and not asked to leave the pitch?
