Here we go again! -

Mildenhall - 8 - Made a very sharp stop from Mcclean (spelling!) and looked very commanding. On todays performance, definate improvement on Flavs
Franny - 6.5 - Solid but drifted in and out of the game
Barrett - 7.5 - Kept Mcclean quiet all game and was commanding throughout in the air
Clarke - 8 - Same as Barrett but also scored the winner
Harding 6 - Didnt do anything awful but didnt win anything in the air and the left side was taken apart again and again by the winger (esp. 1st half)
Scannell - 7 - Did some good things and has very quick feet but didnt get enough crosses into the box
Bailey - 7.5 - Made some hard tackles and was solid but gave the ball away too much and in silly ways.
Moose - 7 - Promising youngster imo. Rarely gives the ball away but is sometimes a bit too cautious
Walker - 7 - Improved as the game went on and showed a couple of good turns of pace. Wasted a couple of good crossing opportunites though
Barnard - 7 - Worked very hard and made a couple of deft touches but was caought offside too much
Furlong - 6.5 - Solid but feel that he didnt win enough balls in the air and didnt hold the ball up particuarly well

Betsy - 7 - Liked him for the 15 minutes I saw. Good touch and a decent turn of pace. Closed the game out well
Revell - 7 - CAme on quite late but won most of the stuff in the air (more than Furlong)
Grant - V. late sub but again closed the game out well!

Reception bailey recieved??

What was the goal like?

Bit of booing at the start but was mixed with applause. tbf to him, he got stuck in and people warmed to him

Goal was scrappy. Corner came in, somebody headed it and it bounced up in the 6 yard box and clarkey just flicked it in

Maybe rons word with him might have given him the kick up the arse he needed.

And every goals a goal, so it's all good!

Sweet result, now lets follow this result up throughout the rest of the season!

still think we missed macca in midfield betsy grant and harding look like 3 decent signings

betsy has got some pace on him!
harding solid left back hasnt got the mulgrew delivery on free kicks tho
grant tough tackling midfielder id prob start him in front of moussa as i think he's too weak

thought mooooooooooooooooos had a good game today, a little harsh on furlong thought he won plenty of headers

Dont agree with those ratings thought Harding had a great match im afraid my favorite player Francis was very lax in the first half and their player Boyd was ripping him apart for the first 30 mins then tilson swopped the full backs for a while and harding was marking him he really did a good job on him. Also Bailey really was not happy with his outburst yesterday and wanted to give him some stick but he was magnificent today and was reading the game so well and getting some great tackles in man of the match today for me

Here are my ratings. Cant agree with the initial post that Baileys mind was elsewhere. I thought considering all that went on yesterday, that he was immense !

Mildenhall - 8 (Made great save, and caught everything - sometimes at second attempt)
Francis - 7 (Not up to usual standard, but has set high one)
Clarke - 8 (Brilliant at the back, looked like a leader and not a player looking to get away - goal crowned excellent performance)
Barrett - 7 (Solid - and not forward as much as usual)
Harding - 7 (Better defender than previous left backs, and got better as match went on)
Scannell - 5 (Poor today - looked nervous to be honest)
Bailey - 9 (We will miss him - was everywhere and battling - gave 100% and cant argue with that - did give away ball a little in 1st half)
Moussa - 7 (Good on ball, but too many sideways balls - still not proven at this level)
Walker - 7 (Much better second half, when got the ball to his feet)
Furlong - 6 (Held ball up well and won some headers but rarely threatening)
Barnard - 7 (Same as furlong, but came alive in last 20 minutes)

Subs - Betsy (7 - looked good and changed game), Grant (6 - not enough time), Revell (5 - did more in 2 minutes than he did in 90 against Canvey!)

Good stuff Blues, very solid, and only clean sheet in whole division !!

For me:

7 - Mildenhall - Seemed solid but was nothing special, just what we need.
7.5 - Harding - A solid left back that showed to me his championship class. Would be a good signing on this showing.
8 - Clarke - Scored the goal and got a clean sheet, bossed the defence about in his usual style.
7 - Barrett - Seemed solid but didn't have too much to do.
7.5 - Francis - Showed his class as per usual, easily a championship quality right back.
7.5 - Scannell - Showed his class at times but didn't set the game alight. P'boro's OS seemed complimentary. A snip at 5k.
8 - Bailey - Showed just what we'll be missing if he leaves, I just wish he'd sign a contract.
7 - Moussa - Didn't do anything special, but didn't look out of place at this level. With a bit of improvement, confidence and experience he could become a good centre mid for us.
8.5 - Walker - Ball stuck to his feet all day long, knew when to pass and when to run with it and had the right back done all game long. Could be his best position until he finds his shooting boots.
7.5 - Barnard - Chased the ball all day, never got the chance he deserved but you knew he cared and that if the chance came he'd finish it.
7.5 - Furlong - Won his fair share of headers, very quick for his age, wasn't off the pace at all and clearly had a good footballing brain. Very good signing on this showing.
subs:
7.5 - Betsy - Looked good, lovely touch to Furlong late on, didn't have enough pitch time to make a real judgement.
7.5 - Grant - Seemed solid, didn't have too much pitch time but managed to keep it in the corner with Francis for a couple of minutes much to the joy of the Southend fans.
7 - Revell - Won a couple of good headers but wasn't on long enough to make a difference.

Overall, a very good, solid performance, exactly what I would have hoped for. Defence seemed confident and that word again, solid. Midfield did well and attacking we looked quite good. A good result against a big team in the league.

my thoughts on todays game

OK I know Im very much in the minority on this message board with my thoughts and opinions, so I would like to give a very honest opinion of todays game after all the pre season in board fighting etc.....

Well today I thought we did ever so well to win the game, with out ever playing that well, and without needing to play that well, for me Peterbrough we well well short of what I was expecting and maybe they majorly underestimated us, because they were poor, they had absolutely nothing to frighten us and yes I thought hey played much better football than us, passed the ball well and alot smoother than us and possesion wise I would have said about 62% 38% to them, However I do feel sometimesw clubs that go up do kinda find themselves on the crest of a wave until the real business starts and they actually have to start playing. Our defence was untroubled, and If and its a huuuuuuuuge if we can keep it together (because you can see how quickly things start to move, by looking at the NB Situation) for the season we should be ok, I like clarke and Barrett they both know each other inside out now and maybe not the best technicley they both wear there hearts on there sleeves. Francis is a great player and again will do well, The new Left back looked good, and was worth holding out for after the Mulgrew disapointment and although clearly showing he didnt know much about us or how we played or the winger he would be playing with, still played very well for the time he has had to meet the players etc. Midfield well NB by far the best player on the pitch although I felt he didnt play as well as he could if if the situation was different/ had macca been there. For me Musssa wasnt and still isnt up to the standard, I just dont see what he is gonna give us this season I really don't, totally outcalssed and muscled, Walker anonomous, clearly not a winger and I feel its a liberty paying to watch players playing out of position, we will have to find a wide player if we are to score goals this season, Scannall of course my opinion and youll scream at me for this but, have I missed something??? a truley avergage footballer, plenty of skill but saw nothing else at all, again if we are to score any goals or player any sort of attractive football then we are gonna need a wide man who can cross the ball. Furlong I was plesantly surprised, no were near Saun Goater type player, and I wont be fooled in to thinking he ever will be for us, but held the ball up ok, had no movemnet from our clueless wingers to feed the ball out to, and before he got subbed played a couple of nice pieces so not bad, howver I would hope a fit Alex revell can play that game with alittle more venom, time will tell....
Barnard good the only real threat we will have infornt of goal thi season, missed any crreative player from the other 10 today to feed onto. And lastly Liah Bettey loooked ok and managed to put a cross in waahhhhhhhoooo could be a good addition, Anthoney Grant looked as affective/non affective as he did last season and thats about it really, an excellent win, and if Borough are gonna be one of the top clubs then fek this league is poor this season. Howeverr I feel we have work to do, we need to play alot more than we did today otherwise its gonna be a looong tuff season

8500 about right, I thought Peterborough would bring more fans down 1800?

a good win southend and a great start

Bailey - 9 (We will miss him - was everywhere and battling - gave 100% and cant argue with that - did give away ball a little in 1st half)

Agree with that, looked like the same old Nicky got stuck in well. We will really miss him if he leaves (especially with Macca out)

Mildenhall - 6 - I thought mildenhall had good presence in the box but showed a bad case of butter fingers!
Franny - 7 - played well once he got the poorly weighted passes out of the way in the first half.
Barrett - 8 - Usuall committed WYSIWYG display.
Harding 6 - On this showing, not in mulgrews league with regard to dead ball delivery,s
Scannell - 6 - Appears to have gone back to last years form. Looked a little lost at times. Perhaps that ridiculous beard is weighing him down.
Bailey - 8 - Put in a great display. Wayward passes in the first half but looked 100% committed and made some excellent hard challenges.
Moose - 7 - Looks composed on the ball. Reminded me a bit of maher.
Walker - 7 - Agree with BIAL
Barnard - 8 - Became more influencial as the game went on. Never afraid to get in where it hurts.
Furlong - 3 - Showed nothing all game.

Betsy - 5 - Didnt really show anything to get excited about. Disagree about the pacey bit. Looked the opposite to me.
Revell - 7 - Agree with BIAL
Grant - 7- Agree with BIAL

Cant argue with much of that post. Scannell looked good against preseason opposition, but might just be first day nerves. Worth sticking with, and trying Betsy on other flank?

Not sure how you can rate Grant on a few minutes football though>!

As for Peterborough - they ARE a very good side, and we dealt with their front men very well - more credit to our defence than on them.

A workman like performance in my opinion.

Still shaky in defence allowing attackers free headers at set pieces. Mildenhall flapped at one, dropped one, but made one a smart save.

The midfield lacks creativity but worked hard.

Walker is wasted on the left wing. I thought we looked better when him and Scannell swapped wings before half-time.

Betsy looked good when he come on.

I didn't think anyone played bad so i would say everyone about 7 but Barrett who was my Man of Match i would give 8
