Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-1 Rochdale

Listening to mahers interview he definitely still got the hump fans are Discussing, having a dig about hearing boos when he made changes, I feel that feeling from last season is now growing further apart. Back to the game, probably a fair result on the first 10 and last 20 minutes of the match. We didn't do enough to win

The triple substitution on 65 minutes changed the course of, what had been up to then, a frustrating afternoon, and in particular the introduction of Macauley Bonne. On paper he was the replacement for Tom Hopper, but actually it was his channel-running as a outlet for our defenders to go a little more direct - which is what Charley Kendall had been tasked with - that proved to make all the difference. That's what led to the own goal, and he fired an effort into the side-netting shortly after that as well.

More than that, it was his experience, intelligence and his gamecraft that really got us going, getting in a confrontation with an opponent that saw them both cautioned. That seemed to lift everyone around him, and from that moment, even whilst we were behind, we felt in more control of the game, which was no mean feat against a Rochdale side that were well-organised and kept possession well.

I think Maher was justified in making the tactical switch with Coker starting ahead of Walker for that reason; whilst three up front could've posed more of an attacking threat, if we coughed up possession as much as it transpired we did - with Taylor and Morton particularly culpable, I thought - then we wouldn't had enough control of the game for the front three to have had any influence.

What the introduction of Bonne, Walker and Appiah-Forson, and subsequently Chambers-Parillon, did was to give us more intent in attacking areas. We actually worked the ball into fairly good positions throughout the game, but the ability of Bonne to run in the channels turned the Rochdale defence around; to that point, even when Kendall was released in similar positions, he seemed to lack the physicality to maintain possession, and so the move either broke down completely or we had to reset, allowing the visitors the opportunity to recover.

In the end we were well worth a point, and it could've been all three as Chambers-Parillon curled off-target and Walker sent an effort narrowly past the right-hand upright; it certainly wouldn't have been unfair on Rochdale, who themselves had earlier chances to extend their lead when Rodney smashed over and later, after Taylor had misplaced a square pass, when Ralph did superbly to read the play and dispossess Mitchell.

There are still areas where we can - and, I expect, will - improve. The midfield three all worked hard, especially out of possession, but equally were wasteful at times, and Bridge wasn't at his threatening best, even though he occupied defenders just by being an outlet on the left. Hopper and Kendall were not as effective as a partnership as when they had Walker around them on Tuesday. We were possibly a little more direct with Goodliffe in the centre of defence as opposed to Golding, but he is fairly solid and is willing to go up and win the ball in both penalty areas, so their competition for places is fascinating. Chambers-Parillon will be fighting for a midfield role soon enough, but for now I quite like him being an impact sub for 15-20 minutes at the end of a game and, as he works his way back into full-time football, I wouldn't rush him into a starting berth.

It's still a big battle to get into the play-offs this season, but I thought the squad showed a lot of fight today. It's only the third point we've gained this season after conceding the first goal, and the fourth where we've been behind at any time. Personally, I'd prefer us to take the lead and control the game so we don't have an opportunity to improve that statistic, but realistically that won't always be the case and sometimes you have to show your mettle, and that was clear in abundance this afternoon.

Another team - like Barnet - who showed exactly how far behind we are if we want to get out of this League.

Quick, one touch passing and movement, even their GK was sweeper keeping.

However as others have stated the subs made all the difference- Walker looked lively and LCP, wow what a player.

But my praise and MotM goes to Bonne for showing passion, fight and a nice touch of **** housery especially to their 14.

Deserves a start on Tuesday night.

what a plonker

Anyone know where I can pick up a programme for today’s game? I’ve collected every one this year but the vendor wasn’t there today
When that's happened in the past, a few have ended up in the club shop. sometime on the Monday.
Might be worth ringing them on Monday, 10am--4pm. 01702300205.

Excellent point at the end of the day and we were unluckily not to snatch it at the end but many are left scratching their heads as to why Kev changed things. When will he learn that attack is the best form of attack and the subs proved that.

Bonne was superb and both KAF and Leon gave us that attacking edge in midfield and Rochdale struggled to cope with it.

I didn’t see much difference in them and Halifax, so why should we change what was a winning formula.

Well deserved point in the end against a good side who play some classy possession based football.

I could understand Maher wanting to play an extra man in the centre of midfield as otherwise Rochdale could have ripped us open far more often. However once again, Coker did not perform anywhere near his best, chasing shadows for the majority of the game. I was crying out for young Leon to come on after 60 mins, but somehow Kev deemed KAF the better option at that point. I was certainly left scratching my head at that decision, especially after the positive impression Leon had made on Tuesday night.
Nonetheless, when he did enter the field after 80 minutes, he wasted no time in reminding us what he has to offer us. He added another dimension to our play. His run into the penalty area had the Rochdale defence running scared with 3 of them completely bamboozled by his silky footwork and ability to change direction.
Bonne once again made a huge impact when coming on and really did unsettle their back line. It was his excellent run and cross that led to Hogan putting the ball into his own net. He takes up some really intelligent positions in wide areas and demands the ball is played out to him. He's becoming more likeable every time I watch him. I love his positive attitude.

Morton, despite giving the ball away a little too often for my liking, again showed why he must be one of the first names on the team sheet. As well as his passing abilities, he is very skilful and some clever footwork created some really good openings which we failed to capitalise on.

The Rochdale goal was a bit of a mess from our point of view. An excellent first time cross (take note Jack Bridge) was headed high and back into the danger area by Ralph before Rodney headed the loose ball in the top corner with Hayes helpless.

Next up on Tuesday night is Aldershot. I want to see both Bonne and Leon rewarded for their positive impacts today with starts in place of Hopper and Coker. Let's go out and get on the front foot and get some early goals.

Mixed emotions after that. Really happy to get a draw so late in the day but could (and should) have put our chances away to win.

Silly goal to concede. Goodliffe called for the ball at the top of his lungs only to head it straight into Ralph’s back.

Also surprised Walker got dropped for Coker as he looked miles better Tues night, although he did miss a chance or two tonight.

Share of the spoils - for Southend United against Rochdale (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

A LATE own goal from Rochdale defender Liam Hogan rescued Southend United a share of the spoil at Roots Hall this afternoon.

The Shrimpers seemed set for another disappointing Saturday when Devante Rodney headed the visitors in front in the first half.

But Blues secured a point six minutes from time when Hogan slid Macauley Bonne’s right wing cross into the back of his own net.

Play-off chasing Rochdale threatened first with Rodney volleying wide of the left post from 12 yards before Blues hit back with Gus Scott-Morriss seeing a deflected low shot saved by Sam Waller down to his left hand side.

Tom Hopper then headed James Morton’s right-wing cross over the top of the North Bank net before Charley Kendall dragged a left footed shot wide of the right post from the left hand side of the penalty area.

But Rochdale stood firm and opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Jili Buyabu’s dangerous left wing cross was headed off the line by Blues skipper Nathan Ralph – only for Rodney to nod the rebound high into the top left hand corner of the net from 10 yards.

Blues hit back with Oli Coker’s deep right wing cross clipping the top of the crossbar on its way over before the visitors wasted a huge opportunity to make it 2-0 in the 35th minute when Buyabu’s left wing cross was cleared as far as Rodney who somehow fired over the crossbar from six yards.

The Shrimpers replied and had a goal ruled out on the stroke of half-time when Scott-Morriss converted a right wing corner from Morton but his effort was disallowed for quite an obvious handball.

Blues had plenty of the ball after the break but struggled to create clear cut chances.

In a bid to become more of an attacking threat, Shrimpers boss Kevin Maher made a triple change in the 65th minute with Macauley Bonne, Josh Walker and Keenan Appiah-Forson entering the action in place of Hopper, Kendall and Noor Husin.

Rochdale still threatened next with Hayes doing well to smother an awkward shot from Buyabu before the hosts came close to equalising when Coker’s low, left footed shot was cleared as far as Scott-Morriss whose follow up effort was cleared off the line by Kyron Gordon.

The Shrimpers made a fourth change in the 81st minute with Leon Parillon replacing Coker in midfield and five minutes later the home-side were level.

Bonne did well to break the offside before cutting in from the right flank and delivering a dangerous low cross Hogan could only slide into the back of his own net.

Blues pushed for a late winner with a last ditch challenge from Gordon stopping Walker scoring before Parillon fired wide of the right post after bursting into the penalty area.

The Shrimpers then threatened right at the death with a shot from Walker dropping inches wide of the right post after Waller had failed to claim a left wing cross from Bridge.

Full credit to Kev today as his changes were what turned the game on its head. Bad luck leading up to their goal, and Rochdale are a good side and you could tell. They missed one or two good chances but they had plenty of quality. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them make the play-offs and do well.

The triple substitution changed things in our favour, and LCP coming on added to that too. All four of those subs were a huge improvement on those who started in the same roles. Who knows what impact they would have had from the off.

Hayes 7 Maybe had one save to make and had no chance with the goal. The only player with any urgency at times.
GSM 7 Just stupid punching the ball in. Did pretty well other than that.
Taylor 6 Looked a bit more sloppy than usual, but still managed to save himself.
Goodliffe 6 Hoofs and heads, and is a threat at set piece, but often feel like he’s a mistake waiting to happen when he gets on the ball.
Ralph 7 Strong defensively and got forward well later on to support. There are times where you can tell he’s played at a higher level.
Bridge 4 Lost any pace, was beaten every time defensively and couldn’t beat his man going forwards. Such a weak link.
Husin 5 Game seemed to pass him by almost completely.
Morton 8 Composed on the ball and at times was the only one getting back. He’s not a destroy like Cav but he dictated the tempo.
Coker 6 Seemed to be a little lost at times between getting forwards and defending.
Hopper 6 His experience helps, but too often he was too deep and too static.
Kendall 6 So energetic and does so much, but just can’t produce the end product.

Subs
Bonne 9 His movement in the front line changed the game completely. Superb work and persistence to force the goal.
Walker 8 Some actual pace and movement which helped, and he was afraid to take a shot.
KAF 7 Actually took people on and made things happen, I’m not 100% convinced by him but he brings something different.
LCP 8 Physical, fast, strong, and confident, very attacking minded and really helped push us on.

4 points from this week is a good return. We could’ve been behind by more by half-time and we could’ve won by full-time, so a point feels a fair result.

5 assists now for Bonne- top alongside Morton, another player who has some real quality

Bonne can play the target man but is equally at home either side in a three as he has more pace than credited for and his delivery is very good. There is absolutely a player in there and glimpses of why he had one very good season in the Championship - as applies to LCP who seems like an unbelievable piece of business.

LCP would ideally be in a 10 role - if we play three up top probably left or right in a front three. I would start him Tuesday as I would Bonne. Personally I would start with Bonne and Walker up top and give LCP 60 from the start.

We can then bring on Hopper and Kendall and either go three up top or bring in Coker/KAF according to the game situation.
