Blue tinted optimist⭐🦐
I've just read through this thread and am amazed at some of the comments to be honest.
It is of course everyone's right to an opinion but as we live in a land of free speech it is also everyone else's right to disagree. As for telling someone to go and support someone else, I personally can't see anything wrong with that. Every supporter has the option of attending or not and if you really want to see top class football there are several London grounds where you can see one of the best leagues in the world week in, week out. We can't be compared football wise to those playing at the top or higher levels.
However, if you really want to support Southend, then do just that. Get behind the team, bring a mate or two along, buy a shirt, buy a programme. That way the club gets more money and is more likely to be able to get itself out of the financial mire it's in, thereby attracting better players who play better football, etc. etc.
The answer is so simple, yet so hard to do. Why is that? I notice how everyone has absolutely razor sharp criticism of all and sundry and retrospectively have all the answers. But does anyone actually think "What can I do for the club?". I know True Blue does and his efforts in generating support, club liason etc over the last season or two have been fantastic.
Let's be realistic shall we? We haven't signed any players due to lack of finances. Shock horror. There surely is no supporter who is unaware of our financial plight.
We've lost three of our quality players over the summer and one is currently injured.
Ryan Hall, another quality player, is not in the right frame of mind to play at the moment and there is speculation as to whether he ever will again.
Cresswell, Straker, Spicer, Tomlin and Assombalonga are all new and it does take a little time to gel. Anyone who says it doesn't really doesn't know too much about team sports.
Smith is arguably our best signing and is yet to play.
We were down to 17 available players on Saturday and included youth teamer Njie on the bench.
Wycombe were a league higher than us last year and have some decent players... Gareth Ainsworth, Gary Doherty at the back (who beat Cresswell in the air all ends up every time in the second half), Matt Spring, Dennis Oli and they had just signed Jo Kuffour. They aren't a bad team but had an off day on Saturday.
And we beat them with a scratch team.
Each player gave 100%.
We have 3 points.
There are some huge positives to take from that display... the form of Assombalonga and Tomlin, who have pace and are striking up a good understanding.
Hurst looked good before his head injury and delivers a good set piece.
Cresswell and Phillips were majestic at the back and we looked solid for the first time for months.
Timlin is clearly not fit yet but still gave his all and after a really poor opening 15 minutes got better.
Spicer barely put a foot wrong and made several intelligent and accurate passes. On another day he would have also had two goals.
Come on people, based on Saturdays game there's more to be happy about that not.
