No.But surely your description also applies to Prosser?

Nope...Prosser is far superior defensively to Straker. I think Sturrock wants another Clohessey for the LB position and although Straker possibly could do a job going forward he doesn't have a defensive bone in his body.

Prosser won't fly down the wing and overlap like Clohessey but as long as he has options he will play the ball to feet as he did quite a few times yesterday. In the first half he got well into the Wycombe half, played a lovely ball to Tomlin's feet who span and went with the ball.

Prosser will show the attacker inside too often, hoof soft high balls until Cocko warns him against it or (as at Cobblers) Martin has a word with him, he will not get in the tackle but back off, he will wander infield too often; he will win headers and block a shot but he is not a left back and is a cheap utility emergency cover & not good enough. What I have seen so far of Straker is that he is not the answer but it is early days for him so I will reserve judgement until he has a few more real games.

I seem to remember noticing Straker last year when playing for Aldershot against us and wishing we had him as a left back instead of Gilbert.

I'm sure he will settle and become a decent signing. Don't forget, Chris Powell joined us from Aldershot and didn't set the world alight when he first joined but just got better and better.

An excellent 3 points, somewhat laboured as we got nervous in front of goal and could not get the second goal we deserved. A surprisingly poor Wycombe should have got well beaten by 3 or 4 but were kept in it by some poor finishing. However if you had said before kick off we would get 3 points, would have taken it as thought a point was the likely outcome.

Belford 7 - Good game, was never put under great pressure though, but pleased for him a clean sheet
Clohessy 7 - Links well with Leonard and got dome good crosses in
Phillips 7 - Solid game from the skipper, forming good partnership with Cresswell
Cresswell 7.5 - Best game for us thus far, got his head to everything
Prosser 7 - Kept the ball on ths floor more, steadily improving
Leonard 6.5 - Steady but lacks any real attacking threat
Timlin 7 - Good performance, adding some bite to his game recently
Spicer 7 - Keeps it simple, deserved a goal yesterday
Hurst 6.5 - Looked good for the 25 mins was on, shame for the injury
Tomlin 7 - Worked really hard for the team, should really have scored at the end, nervous in front of goal
Assombolonga 8 - MOTM, superb performance, pace, graft, some silky skills, hope he stays

Straker 6.5 - Got better as game wore on, shaky to start, needs confidence
Harris 5.5 - Only on for five mins, had a shot from distance which really should have fed through to either Tomlin or Assombolonga, cannot remember which

We do seem to be playing it on the floor more, but have added some pace up front which worried the life out of the Wycombe defence. The balls over the top worked for our current strikers and hopefully we will continue to mix this up as it appears to be working. Both strikers can best their defenders either way by pace or turning them, this win for me has certainly removed the black cloud of the transfer window for now. UTB

I'm as delighted and relieved about the result as no doubt the players are. However, for me, the black cloud of the transfer window has certainly not been lifted, as Tilly would have said, "we are down to the bare bones." Risk of injuries and suspensions could find us very quickly in serious trouble, especially in midfield. To ease that situation and to strengthen the side we need to bring in two or three players on loan. Only then will the black cloud start to be dissipated. The result of Luggy's talk with Hall tomorrow will reveal whether or not we need to replace him for the moment. Bearing in mind that he may well leave after Christmas it should also be remembered how difficult it is to do good business during the New Year window.

Had to go to a wedding so couldn't make the game (lame excuse, I know !!). Love the ratings and comments threads, because it's a great way of find out the lowdown, however on this occasion i'm not too bothered how we played. I'm just so pleased we got 3 points. Onwards and upwards.

After what I heard, I would expect Hall to have a loan to Blackpool with a view to a permanent in January. Apparently NOT SUFC's fault it didn't go through in time.

It is good that SUFC agreed the Blackpool offer and that Hall had agreed personal terms with them but a shame, for some reason, the deal didn't go through in time.

Any idea why not ?

My understanding is that it was a problem at Blackpool's end, not sure exactly what, everything was ready from our point of view.

Lets hope so, know he wasnt playing in position yesterday but though Straker was awful.
I honestly thought he did pretty well when he came on.

He didn't start well but settled down and looked good going forward I thought. Put some decent crosses in but was sometimes positionally awry.

A long way from awful though to be honest.

For various reasons this was my first game of the season.

I was really impressed with the front two. Both quick and held the ball up very well - ball over the top was very effective, in particular with league 2 defenders not wanting to take chances against the 2 speedsters so we got a throw in an attacking area at worst.

In midfield, I thought Timlin was pretty good - spicer looked ok too. Leonard was ok, but Hurst was missing for me - other than his set piece delivery (although this included 10 mins where he couldn't see from one eye). I thought Straker looked really good in the first half when he initially came on, but was no where near as effective in the second - he's getting stick on here which I think is harsh based just on yesterdays performance.

Back 4 - Clohessy and in particular Cresswell were outstanding. Phillips ok and Prosser half decent, although he missed a couple of tackles and one interception which nearly cost a goal late on.

Belford didn't do too much wrong, but he is too short for my money - struggling to get to the punch time and again - I would rather see Smith given a game.

Really we should have won more comfortably, but if we look so comfortable with a ref giving us nothing, then we should do OK this season - especially if we can get a few more in on loan

Bore off and support someone else then. We are in a tough place at the moment, a few short on the playing front, four or five injured and no money to spend. Get behind the team or **** off

You are Adolf Hitler and I claim my "Five Pounds".
This is a board where everyone can have their views on all things Southend United aired. How dare you dictate to someone who shares a different view. Then go on and to tell him to, " **** off ".
What next ? You going to build a concentration camp with a gas chamber for people like me, and very many other's that are unhappy with the way the team have been playing, or the way the club is being run ? :omg:

i hadnt seen a proof of Godwin's law until now, thank you for being so ignorant and insensitive

Agree with all of that! The only thing I disagree with was that I quite liked the ref to be honest. There was the odd decision that was wrong, but I felt his linos let him down on those occasions. The main thing for me was that he tried to play the advantage really well a lot of times and brought the game back to book some dodgy challenges only once the advantage was lost. I wish more refs were like him.

Totally agree.
