Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-0 Southport

People moaning about the game despite us making 6 changes. Was never going to be a thrashing and Southport have got a few former EFL players with a lot of experience.

The almighty York City lost to a team hovering over the relegation zone two leagues below. Nothing is a given in this comp.

We controlled the ball well, dictated the game and didn’t let them have too much of the play. With all things concerned happy to be in the next round with a clean sheet. Job done.

A win is a win, but 1-0 against Southport is disappointing. By contrast Eastleigh put four past Basford and Aldershot whipped Chorley 8-0. Both clubs would be stern opposition for us in the next round so let's not count our chickens yet.
Both Basford and Chertsey (not Chorley) are a level below Southport. Am sure if we played either we’d have scored a few too.

That said, thought we really struggled to break down a stubborn Southport side.

Kev said Southport used the “low block” - a quick google tells me that this a most depressing tactic for any football team to employ.

Interesting that Kev said in his post match interview that we need to add some real quality, to what we already have, to push on in the second half of this season. A hint of what’s to come, or just a message to Justin et al?

Having watched Bonne week in and week out home and away this season he just can’t cut it at this level. He can’t score and doesn’t help anyone either, he misses every flick on or he gets too much contact and heads it straight back or worse off the pitch all together. He is a Sunday league headless chicken!!
Agree. he is at to low a level.....

A win is a win and after 6 changes it was always going to be a bit of a struggle. But we dominated the game by and large and should have had one or two more. Surprised Kendall was on the bench. Felt Bim was below par and as hard as Bonne works he just doesn’t look like scoring. Felt sorry for Waldron. Been left out the squads in recent weeks and given 2 or 3 minutes today. Stand outs for me were Wind, Gubbins and my MOM Morton. The guy has a sweet left foot and always looks to be progressive in his play. Lovely cross for KAF goal. But for all our possession we rarely carved them open and when we did we wasted the chances. But into the hat for the next round and if we get to Wembley in May no one will care about todays game

First time back in the NB for around 35 years for me. Actually enjoyed the experience. Food and drink good and atmosphere decent. Stood infront of Dan with the drum and most around us were standing and singing although others in the ES have said they couldn’t hear us much. For me Dan needs to go in the middle section to start with and then surround himself with those that want to stand and back the lads. Too many today were sitting and not engaging. The seats don’t make it easy as of course these are seats fitted on an existing terrace rather than purpose built. For it to work properly it needs to be made into a safe standing area or even remove the seats altogether. But it needs all of W block plus some to move there to generate the kind of atmosphere people want. But as I said I did enjoy it in there.

Thought Morton and KAF played well. Morton bossed the midfield which was so clearly lacking at Braintree.

I wasn't particularly impressed with Wind today, and also think Ralph and Pepple had rare off days.

I feel a little sorry for Bonne. Thought he was better in the second half and put a shift in. He's a striker that needs service and balls played to feet... which I'm not sure we managed for either of the forwards much today.
Ball played to feet and ideally six inches from the net. Even then……

From the Southport fans forum:

"Was a battling performance in a game with plenty of ebb and flow. More than held our own for a few decent periods before tiring. Shame that we wasted the one good chance we had. Southend clearly a much better team and had several gears if they needed them."

"Disappointed with the result, but cant complain too much. They were the better team, one of the more positive days with everyone in a good mood, welcomed well by the home fans. Hopefully some confidence built by competing with them."

King Kev’s say’s we had illness in the camp, so not going to complain. Two or three of them looked knackered. Pepple was one that looked well below par. Morton looked good, made the goal, that never looked like coming. KAF took it well. Tough watch again. Hopefully get a few back fit for Halifax. Kev’s also indicated a couple may be coming in? Looks like Moncur will be leaving back to the O’s??

And York lost to??

So depressed are my expectations that I was genuinely beaming with happiness to experience a toilet with hot running water and a food outlet which served hot chocolate powder which didn't taste like it had come out of a Chernobyl ration pack.
Had coffee from West stand outlet last match. It was truly revolting and I threw it away.

I wasn’t at the game today, but have seen a few posts saying that the midfield 3 were our best players (yours suggest 2 of them). But yet Bonne is not getting the service he needs. Appreciate there are other players on the pitch - but wouldn’t balls to feet typically come from the central midfield to the striker?

I did chat with a striker a few weeks ago, one who had seen Bonne a few times this season. He said he thought he was “@@@@@@@ useless”.
It's our best 3 IMO, but they should be playing in a 4-3-3, especially at home - maybe then we would actually create more chances

First half was a complete 🥱. Second half was better and they were unlucky not to draw level. Through to the next round, so that’s all that counts. However, i wouldn’t agree with Kev’s assessment that we looked comfortable tbh, could have easily gone to pens. Feel sorry for Bonne though, going to have to watch that one again later.

We did enough, but made hard work of it. We absolutely dominated the first half but only managed 2 shots on target. That kind of summed up this team for me, plenty of good build up work but no real end product.

Thankfully after the break we finally got a great delivery in (was it Coker?) and Appiah-Forsan did enough to force it in. After that we sat back too much for my liking and nearly got undeservedly caught out late on.

Both strikers were poor IMO today, Bim had a rare off day after a bright first 20 mins. Bonne… I’m sorry but I still can’t see much positive to say. He did make one good defensive header from a corner, and won a few flick ons if I’m clutching. He never should have been offside for his ‘goal’, and annoyed me that he had a pop at Kendall for being out of position after he made a lung busting run. Try practicing what you preach!

MOM Coker - Very impressive and proved he can play on the left side of the 3 midfielders. No need to use that excuse that only Husin is a natural there any more.
