Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-0 Southport

Found it quite amusing how salty Kev was (yet again) in the post-match interview.
Claiming we were totally comfortable and had plenty of chances...flied in the face of what the ever-rational Paul Clark had to say.
Basically that we keep possession well but do the square root of **** all in terms of end product.

Definitely wasn't as comfortable as Kev likes to make out. They could have quite easily been in front at half time for a lack of quality.

I liked what I saw from KAF, George Wind and James Morton.
Pepple was man-handled out of the game and Bonne did bugger all as per (waiting for the hipsters to hit me with meaningless stats to suggest otherwise).

What was the point of getting Waldron on with 2 minutes to go. Insulting. Surely he gets at least half an hour in a game like this.
Kev seems to really struggle in the face of criticism. Better get used to it, as back to back 1-0s against inferior teams like Braintree and Southport isn't going to bring rave reviews.

We look rather toothless.

Southport fan here Awful game to watch . Not unsurprisingly you were far better on the ball and controlled the game from start to finish. Dubious goal perhaps ? Couldn't tell from away end . Looked in n no complaints from players . Shame we've no midfield . You're 22 was brilliant Good luck in rest round and In league .
👍
Our number 22 very seldom gets on the pitch, but he is pretty useful in the air when he does:Winking:

I thought we played quite well against a team who were difficult to break down. Patience is needed against this type of opponent. Plus points were the excellent passing of Moreton and Appiah Forson deserves to start the next game in place of Husin. It was refreshing to see a midfield player getting into the box along with the strikers. On the downside Bonne never scored again. In the first half a great cross whizzed along the six yard box and he just stood still and watched it go by rather than try and get on the end of it. Certainly not a natural predator.

Well, not a game that will live long in the memory, but don’t mind the quality, feel the result.

Pitch held up well but Southport were set up not to concede and try and catch us on the break/score from a set piece. Harsh but true.

Hard for the midfield (who individually all played well) with a very low block and a resolute set of players giving up possession but not allowing us through. The lack of an x-factor dribbler or express pace dulled any chance of rattling up a decent score. Good header from KAF following a good cross from Morton and that’s really it. Bonne? I think his race is run. Pepple - not his day, today. Gubbins - good performance. Likewise Ralph, Jeacock and Wind. Bridge disappointing.

We are 6 grand up and in the draw for the next round. Wembley bound? WS Junior and his best mate who finally saw us win are up for the cup (slash trophy)…

How much was hospitality for this game? Tempted to do it if at home next round as I think it was cheaper?

Sorry that’s not correct, both those incidents were right in front of where I sit. It wasn’t a header on a plate he and the defender arrived at the same time, it wasn’t even a half chance he just managed to get there slightly first, and Husins shot was not going in, it needed the touch, whether he was offside or not I couldn’t say .

Thought Bonne did well 2nd half with plenty of intelligent link up play, he also took up a number of good positions for passes only for the ball to go backwards.

If I was a foward relying on goals to further my career, I’m afraid Southend would be one of the last clubs I would consider as we create very very little for the forward line to feed off. Pepple may have 10 to his name but all bar a couple have been self made with Collymore-esque runs. Until we sort that issue out then we aren’t leaving this league anytime soon.

Onto the game, rinse and repeat the last few games really. Morton was the best player on the pitch, I thought Gubbins did ok in the middle, Ralph, Coker and Taylor were themselves…Bridge was poor again and Wind probably had the worse of his few games for us so far. Thought their nr 6 did well against Bim and their 9 lead their line well.

We’ve played 3 poor teams in succession now without too much conviction, will be interesting to see how next week against Halifax goes
Yes the service to our forwards is questionable, but the facts are that Pepple has 8 goals in 18 appearances (some of which were sub) and Bonne has 0 goals in 21 appearances.
One is always looking for a way to take full responsibility for the outcome and the other is hiding.

I would say we are more than 6k up , you have to take todays paying crowd into it.

My take on today.

If we want to move forward then bonne and Waldron need moving on.

Harsh on Waldron but he just isn't at the standard required to be EFL..

Bonne is a complete waster and had a first half chance put in a plate for him by bridge and didn't even attempt to get on the end of it. Then dug bridge out. He has had plenty of chances and he isn't going to cut it. End of story.

KAF deserves a chance. Really good effort, great first touch and gets a goal, although it seemed a little contentious and possibly a keeper OG after hitting the post and rolling along the line. He gets forward well.

I also thought gubbins and Coker had decent games and passed the ball well.

Wind has so much pace and didn't really try and beat his marker at any point.

Southport fans were a credit to their club. Decent numbers and voice and were annoyingly loud in the railway before the game. Good luck to them, although in truth we should have created much more against their team and 1-0 seems to be kevs mantra.

The northbank. Not for me.

Thought the atmosphere wasn't great, the entrance and exits were cramped. I loved the north back in the day when it was a proper terrace, but this just isn't the same, although the toilets are vastly improved. I'll stay in the west. Also, the queue for the burgers was crazy and cash only for beers as the machine was broke.

Another dull and uninspiring game which we scrape through. 3 wins on the bounce against very poor sides.

Things need to be so much better in the final third and I'm still dubious that Kev is the right man for the job.

For now though. We are in the next round and I hope we get another home draw against a lower league side.
