I took my daughter up to a university open day at Manchester University on Saturday and was lucky enough on the drive home to be able to tune into BBC Radio Stoke to listen to the commentary of the last 30 minutes.

The commentary team included summariser Ray Williams, who I imagine was in some way linked to PVFC, and during commentary he actually said to the commentator "do you know what I actually hate Phil Brown more than I hate Garner of Preston".

The commentator also said about Southend fans when they kept the ball in the crowd toward the end of the game that they clearly had absolutely no brain cells!

Good to hear their disappointment at the final whistle.

Talking of which, they should have mentioned their very own 6 Chris Duffy. He was the idiot who got himself booked over the JW incident. So glad he upset the East stand. All their anger, as it should be, was directed at him and Vale.

The referee, who I think had a decent game, handled that White booking appallingly with the way he steamed over I thought he was going for red and thats what caused their number 6 and Bolger to get involved in some pushing and shoving.

Ref did more harm than good in that one.

FFS - what is it with people going on about "hoofs" and distribution from defenders....I am willing to believe that any of our squad can play an accurate 40 yard pass..they are professional footballers after all. However playing passes under pressure is a different thing.
It's clearly a tactical instruction...If Full Backs have to clear it, it goes down the line,...if CB's have it they go diagonal...don't blame the players, it's what they are instructed to do.

Ability to play accurate passes out of defence depends entirely on how the opposition are pressing us...as an example as people seem to be getting on JW's back. if he has the ball in the RB position and is under pressure from the opposition would we rather he tried to play it out of defence and lost the ball or lumped it long into the vague area forwards will be expecting it to go?

I seem to remember one particular Bolger basher last year slating him for a) getting caught trying to play out of defence and b) playing too many long balls IN THE SAME MATCH REPORT!

John White isn't a 'great' passer. I reckon he'd admit it as well. Coker is much better on the ball and has the skill to give himself time.

That in itself isn't a bad thing, as you say, because he gets rid. However I've seen plenty of games where White's inability to retain possession has put us under pressure.

White does seem to benefit from a winger on his wavelength (Kevan Hurst in particular). Coker seems to be fine with anyone in front of him.

While we're on the White-bashing theme, 1:10 isn't his finest moment.

But he did block a shot on the line - so all good.:whistling:

It would appear that White -bashing is your thing. Is 1:10 the best example to back up your argument. The other day you posted some ridiculous stats to favour O'Neil over JW.

After seeing both of them recently most people at least can see why the manager and his team mates hold the club captain in such high regard. In the summer we had plenty of posts about which players would not be able to cut it in L1. Glad to see he, like so many others in the squad, has proved all the doubters wrong.

Maybe, I don't think John White is particularly good. But I'm glad he's played well in the last two games.

What was 'ridiculous' about the stats I put up? We have got more points and conceded less goals, on average, with O'Neill instead of White. I caveated those stats.

We have competition across the park, which for much of last season we didn't have. That means that White (and Prosser, Deegan etc) have had to fight for their places and up their game to ensure they're selected. That's a good thing.

If White continues this good form then great, I'd be really pleased for him and happy to be proven wrong. However if it drops off I want O'Neill to get the chance because I think he's a good player (and my ridiculous stats support that).

P.S. 1:10 into that video is poor defending. Leaving two players free in the box to try (and fail) to double up with Bolger is bad decision-making, and very nearly cost us a goal.

Well luckily for us we have a manager (at the moment) who knows a thing or two about playing at right back. So I'll back his judgement if he decides to play either of them.

Lovely piece of irony on the factually accurate BBC Football Southend United Web page. The headline and then the main Port Vale match report show a beautifully clear picture of young Joe wearing......................yep, you guessed it, a NEWPORT COUNTY shirt and a haircut bordering on normal.

What is ridiculous about your stats is the O'Neill has only played 4 games. He happens to have come into the team when they are playing well. John White however has played considerably more games including the beginning of the season when the team were adapting to life in a new division. You have also not made it clear if they are White's Southend career stats or just this seasons.

The stats also in no way prove that O'Neill is a good player as they do not measure his contribution. They just show that over a very short period the team have played well. In fact one of the main difference over the last few games is that we are scoring more goals, something Coker has contributed to but nothing I recall O'Neill doing.

Using you logic Spurs should have ditched Gareth Bale after 24 games as clearly the stats prove just how useless he is.

I think it is an interesting debate whether O'Neill or White is a better player but you always know someone is losing that debate when they have to resort to spurious stats.

from what i've seen White is the better player - he's solid and dependable and you notice him more when he's not there.

Luke O'Neill probably has the potential to be a better player in time and is the better player attacking and maybe in the future.

if you had a hybrid of the two they'd be top of the championship at least so it's good to have the option

Yes - that is the future. If we can do it with cows, sheep and race horses why not footballers and genetic engineering. Footballers will be selling their sperm at ever higher prices as they go up the leagues and get international games.

I'm off to set up www.footballersperm.co.uk as a website before anyone else does .............:stunned:
