What I couldn't understand today was why we took so long to adjust our tactics when things were clearly going wrong. Their defence was gobbling up all of the high balls and set pieces that we put in. Corr was just not at the races, misjudging an embarrasing number of headers and flicking on to no one when he made contact. When we went 0-2 down (as a result of a hand ball and an offside - although Harrold's goal was well taken) we HAD to do one of two things. Either put Ferdinand to the back asap and throw Mohsni up front to give their back line an aerial challenge or keep the ball on the floor (even from set pieces) and play through them. We did neither until the game was past saving. It was Sawyer who got us playing properly again. Very, very frustrating. And you are absolutely right OBL - they were a bunch of yobs.

Too right. He was excellent, and the way he shut Ryan Hall out of the game completely was a considerable reason for how fruitless we looked going forward today.

We were poor today, make no mistake. Second best to every ball and came a cropper against a very well organised outfit. Shrewsbury aren't spectacular at all, distinctly similar to ourselves in fact, but make it very difficult to carve open opportunities against them and took there's extraordinarily well. Harrold produced a great finish for their second, whilst the first he did handball in the lead up.

As for us, well, where to start. Clohessy had a poor game, and it has been coming for a while. Hall was shut out by the excellent Gladinson and Grant was simply not at the races. As they shut out Hall, Corr was starved of service and was doubled up on by the two Shrewsbury centre-backs who dealt with him fairly well. Sturrock worked hard to little effect, and we really did make hard work of forcing any form of goalscoring chance.

Their goal, on the stroke of half-time, probably took it out of us, but we were still unquestionably poor and can perform far better than we showed today. Both sets of fans have a lot to answer for. I've not got anything against making it difficult for opposition players per se, but the abuse of Harrold overstepped the mark and throwing missile at him is the act of absolute scum. That said, the Shrewsbury fans who jeered Mohsni as he was stretchered off ought to be ashamed of themselves, too.

.

Agree completely.

Their no 18 played a blinder, and Ryan Hall had no chance to make an impact as he was marked completely out of the game. Clohessy, Grant and Corr all had a bad day at the office, which didnt help, and any hint of creativity was immediately and effectively dealt with by a well organised Shrewsbury side. They arent any better than us, to be honest, but they did work as a team far better than we did. They also looked like the sort of tricky team that does well in this division, big, strong and effective at railroading through the opposition. We didnt help ourselves at all by missing a couple of golden opportunities in the first half and getting dragged into hoofball, which was always going to be a bad plan against their height and in that wind! In defence of Blair, he was creating space, which Corr failed miserably to take advantage of - couldnt work out why he was substituted and Corr stayed on, thought he was the better of the two of them. We made a serious dogs breakfast of that, and until we can sort that out we will continue to be also-rans!

Evans - 5 - Obviously didnt notice the wind and distribution not as good as it should be.
Clohessy - 5 - as already stated, bad day at the office.
Barker - 6 - Looked unspectacular but solid.
Mohsni - 6 - Played well, caused a few problems, but should not have scrapped with Harrold - if he hadnt been carted off on a stretcher, I was convinced one of the two of them would be taking an early bath! Fingers crossed its nothing too serious and he's back soon.
Gilbert - 6 - Solid and unspectacular, but did nothing wrong
Ferdinand - 5 - Difficult game for the lad, he had an almost useless Grant and caged Hall with him in midfield, so was never going to cope.
Easton - 5 - Same situation - 2 of them trying to do four jobs.
Grant - 4 - Whatever's going on Granty, sort it out! Cant understand why he's taken to throwing himself on the floor in a poor attempt to get a free kick, and not sure if he's carrying an injury, as the sharpness has gone. Maybe a couple of games on the bench to let Sawyer have a run?
Hall - 5 - Had no chance today, was rendered completely ineffective
Sturrock - 6.5 - Worked tirelessly, pulled the defence to create space; all to no avail as he was running the front line on his own - why oh why didnt Sturrock leave Blair on the pitch, take Corr off and give Harry a run out alsongside him?
Corr - 5 - Looked a yard too slow and unfit today. However, overall, would rather have Corr up front than Harrold.

Never did understand the hatred of Matt Harrold that went on while he was with us, and I dont like to see ex-blues players given a hard time, but its also very irritating that yet again, one of our many under achieving ex-centre forwards pitches up at The Hall, plays better than he ever played for us, and then scores...

Special word for Sawyer - very talented, quick and intelligent play, which will become a huge asset at the back end of the season when the rest of them catch up!!

interesting Tweet from Blair "Its been a good run,Can't win them all but angry at how it happened. Please please groundsman pull your finger out"

Is he trying to blame the pitch?

Bit of a strange comment about the groundsman. I see we have agreed to swap a reserve game next week which should have been at Luton to Roots Hall, the reason being Luton want to protect their pitch from further damage.

How people can say 2 decent goals won itfor them! The first was a farce the ref waves play on as he sees an advantage, we immediatly lose the advantage, ball gets layed to Harrold and everyone sees he handles it (except the ref) and the ball ends up in net. 2 chances for the game to have been stopped so how is that a decent goal?
Second goal the player is clearly 2 yards offside how is that a decent goal!

As for ratings I just hav eto say everyone had a poor day, I will give everyone 5 except Ferdinand who I think was steady and deserves a 7.
Ref and his team deserve nothing except red cards!!
BV please move back!

The pitch was definitely cutting up yesterday, in the first half their left winger went past Clohessy only to scuff up a big divot which ultimately tackled him. So maybe Sturrock jr may have a point.

He does... one of the first things I thought when I entered the ground yesterday was that the pitch looked patchy at best. It's probably to be expected with the number of games we've played on it recently, what with the youths on an extended run too.

I'm sure the groundsman might be thinking 'how about you pull your finger out Blair, you could have played all day without even looking like scoring.'

To be fair, most of the groundsman who trudge around the pitch at half time waving their forks at the ground barely look like they know what day it is, let alone how to maintain the playing surface properly.

How bad must Corr be before people give him a rating that he currently merits, namely 1 or 2?
When people give say 5, it must mean he has done something constructive... yesterday I saw nothing at all that could be called this.

We have a competent keeper, above average defence (for league 2), exceptional midfield, and didley-squat up front...and that my friends is the reason we will not sniff the play-offs.

I don't think that we should overreact to this defeat - we are still one of the form teams in the division. I wonder though, if I am the only one that thinks that we should have played to the whistle for the first goal. Several of our players paused fractionally to appeal to the referee which allowed them to get in behind us.

Very frustrating afternoon, we played at too slow a pace first 40 mins, when should have taken game by scruff of the neck. Shrewsbury were comfortable at that tempo then caught us twice with the referee obviously not blowing for handball on the first goal and offside on the second. We then had nothing left in the tank to raise our game as much as Sawyer tried he could not do it on his own. On another day we would have walked out with a 0-0 draw and a fortunate point.

Evans 6 - OK, just looks a bit laid back at times
Clohessy 6 - Killer crosses missing today
Mohsni 6.5 - Harrold won their battle
Barker 6.5 - Usual solid game
Gilbert 6 - Best chance missed to score in first half
Ferdinand 6.5 - Too small for centre half yet
Easton 6.5 - Tried to keep us going
Grant 6.5 - Not as much an influence as can be
Hall 6 - Kept quiet all afternoon
Sturrock 5.5 - Nothing came off for Blair
Corr 5 - Does not look fit, leaden

Sawyer 7.5 - MOTM tried to make things happen, spread play and must start next week in place of Blair or Corr
Crawford 6.5 - Had more time than lately, no luck though
Soares 5.5 - No time really, just wish he would attack defenders.

Poor result, but looking at next 5 games in Feb, the only one that looks difficult is Wycombe (H). I am sure we will pick up points in the other four, Accrington (A), Torquay (A), Barnet (H), Northampton (H) with or without Bilel. The best thing is we now have a week without a midweek game to rest up and do not be surprised if we are not in the play off positions come March. UTB

Hmmm .. the youths have only played one cup game on it in the last 10 weeks ! Reserve games have been few and far between (nothing since October) and there have been just 6 home matches since the middle of November. Perhaps Ron's laid off the groundstaff?

Shrewsbury bullied us out of this game, which is credit to them really. They were very strong defensively and we just didn't have any pace to break them down. I'm not sure there first goal was from a handball, but it certainly came from the ref playing an advantage that never materialised and therefore play should have been brought back. Harrold's goal was worthy of winning the game, either way.

Evans 7 - no chance with either goal and I thought he commanded the area quite well.
Clohessy 5 - wasted several good crossing opportunities
Gilbert 4 - beaten easily on the inside twice by his winger, the second time punished with the opening goal. Missed a great chance to equalise or square the ball for a tap-in.
Mohsni 5 - he and Barker left Gilbert too exposed for the first goal
Barker 5
Ferdinand - 6
Grant 5
Easton 4
Hall 6 - the only real dangerous player we had
Sturrock 5 - weakly gave the ball away several times, the worst instance allowing them to score the opener on the break
Corr 5 - didn't turn up

I was going to say the same about Blair, don't even remember him touching the ball :s

The ref ruined the game! Harrold shouldn't have even been on the pitch, leading with his elbow against Barker then the handballs. Oh well, back to reality!

My thoughts entirely.
