0-0 Would have been fair wouldn't it?

They fashioned more clear-cut chances and looked a million times more dangerous in the final third today. They're not a good side - don't get me wrong, if they are one of this division's promotion favourites, that speaks volume about L2's shocking standard of football. But Southend were poor today, very poor, and made Shrewsbury look good. Southend lost themselves the game. So I'd say Shrewsbury deserved their win.

Well what can you say.

It would appear that certain teams will come with a game plan and that game plan is to nullify our creative players and in effect kill our game off whilst effecting there own.

You can see why shrewsbury are near the top as i thought there defence was superb and rarely allowed us to have a sniff all afternoon and left us resorting to the long ball game which was as ineffective today as it was earlier on in the season.

Our stand out players really struggled today and it was obvious that shrews management had done there home work and just as obvious that we are still lacking a valid and effective plan B.

What i will say before i do my ratings is the officials were really really poor today. Not only did they fails to award a blatant free kick when there was no advantage just before shrewsbury scored but missed the most blatant of hand balls from matt harold who then set up the shrews opener.

It wasnt just that incident , but there was numerous pushing throughout the game timewasting and a good few obvious offsides that were not called.

I cant comment on what happened between harold and bilel(i didnt see it) , but it looked to be a bad injury and he tried to run on it after the incident before crashing to the floor in agony. I really hope its not serious , but have a feeling its a bad one and the end of his season.

Morris 6 : Was unlucky with the first goal having got a hand to it and had no chance with the second which was a great strike. Would like him to release it a bit earlier as numerous times hall peeled away into space and he just held on and kicked long and most of those came straight back.

Clohessy 5 : Though sean was poor today and should have offered much more support going foward and his crossing was not the best . Seems his confidence is a little of at the mo. We do not have cover to put pressure on him which i think would improve his game.

Barker 6 : Was solid enough but has had better games in terms of finding feet , but was dependable

Bilel 6 : Had a right ding dong all afternoon with matt harold and let himself get riled. Looked a bit wayward today and im sure his injury has ended his season today.

Gilbert 5 : Had a great game against oxford but struggled today and missed the target when put through from 5 yards at 0-0.

Grant 5 : Was not good today and allowed himself to be bullied and wound up all game and tried to get opposition booked with lots of falling over. Alot of his passes lacked any vision and he didnt do a lot in an attacking sense.

Easton 6: Got around the pitch but was let down by those around him and often found himself isolated in possession with very little movement ahead of him and as a result had to go long more often than not.

Ferdinand 5 : Not a good game for kane today and he really got overwhelmed by number of shrews midfielders running at him and lack of support by his team mates.

Hall 6: Tried and tried and tried , but was marked by two players at all times and struggled to have have the impact he has made lately.

Corr 4 : I have not seen barry be so ineffective since he signed. Quite simply nothing came of for him and he was marshalled by his marker all game .

Sturrock 4 : Same as above but found himself out wide and was totally ineffective all game

Sawyer 7 : We looked much more of an attacking threat when he came on and pushed foward and looked very lively . Think he is due a start and that may come next saturday.

Soares 5 : Came on and missed a great chance from 3 yards

TBV 6 Great first half and subdued second

Not a good day at the office. Beaten comfortably and lost our star player to injury. Good crowd in today and we produce a woeful display.

Hmm, not sure about that, two crap performances from two of the top 10 sides in the division, just the way it goes.

UTB!

They had a game plan and they nullified our threat. We never looked like scoring, they did. And they did, twice. They were the best of two poor teams, so they deserved their win.

Maybe, wouldn't say they where better but I would say that they got in the two positions to score even if they should not have stood as goals!

I heard it from the S U

Their Right Back , No 18 was rather good

Too right. He was excellent, and the way he shut Ryan Hall out of the game completely was a considerable reason for how fruitless we looked going forward today.

We were poor today, make no mistake. Second best to every ball and came a cropper against a very well organised outfit. Shrewsbury aren't spectacular at all, distinctly similar to ourselves in fact, but make it very difficult to carve open opportunities against them and took there's extraordinarily well. Harrold produced a great finish for their second, whilst the first he did handball in the lead up.

As for us, well, where to start. Clohessy had a poor game, and it has been coming for a while. Hall was shut out by the excellent Gladinson and Grant was simply not at the races. As they shut out Hall, Corr was starved of service and was doubled up on by the two Shrewsbury centre-backs who dealt with him fairly well. Sturrock worked hard to little effect, and we really did make hard work of forcing any form of goalscoring chance.

Their goal, on the stroke of half-time, probably took it out of us, but we were still unquestionably poor and can perform far better than we showed today. Both sets of fans have a lot to answer for. I've not got anything against making it difficult for opposition players per se, but the abuse of Harrold overstepped the mark and throwing missile at him is the act of absolute scum. That said, the Shrewsbury fans who jeered Mohsni as he was stretchered off ought to be ashamed of themselves, too.

Ratings -

Evans - 5 - Kicking was awful, and brought a whole host of pressure.
Clohessy - 4 - Poor distribution, awash defensively.
Barker - 6.5 - Only player who can escape with any credit, bar Sawyer.
Mohsni - 6 - Needlessly got involved with scraps with Harrold, and Shrewsbury saw him coming.
Gilbert - 6 - Solid(ish), but still offers little going forward.
Ferdinand - 5 - Not at the races today, nowhere near as retentive as he usually is.
Easton - 5 - As above.
Grant - 4.5 - Second poor game in a week.
Hall - 5 - Jesus, he didn't seen the number 18 coming.
Sturrock - 6 - Worked tirelessly, no effect
Corr - 5 - Struggled immensely on his own.

Subs

Sawyer - 6.5 - Only one worth mentioning. Came on and looked to create. I'd drop Grant for him next week.

Take the blinkers off, dude! We lost 'cos we were sh!te! No two ways about it. If we had players who could put the ball in the back of the net, we would have won. If all 11 players turned up today instead of a crucial 3 or 4 going AWOL for 90 minutes, we'd have won. If we didn't allow ourselves to get sucked into a game of hoof ball during the first half, we'd have been able to impose ourselves and our football on the game a bit more. We did none of things, played poor football and allowed ourselves to be bullied. That's why we lost.

Yes we were shocking but first goal ref gave us advantage and failed to pull the game back when it didn't come. Then the handball. Second goal leading up to it the player receiving it on the left was AT LEAST. 2 yards offside. Make no mistake we were poo but decisions like that cost games.

Another crap performance!! Mainly due to the poor performance by the crowd, could have heard pins drop through the whole game :/
And i will reiterate the point about how bad Blair sturrock is. He cannot and i will repeat cannot compete at this level, he should go back to sunday shiittty league football. We need to get him out and get a BIG, BLACK stricker who canbang in goals! Its like tilson's era over again ARghhhhhhhhhh

Yes, agreed, whatever else happened (and according to the OS, it was 50% possession each) it was two poor refereeing decisions that gifted them the goals so at the end of the day, that was all it was down to. Sorry JTSB, nothing more clear cut than that.

What the heck does the colour of someone have to do with it??? What a ridiculous statement

Two decent goals won the game for them. Their back four seemed to win almost every high ball that came into their penalty area. We had no threat upfront, if Corr is off form then there is no goal threat whatsoever from our two strikers. Sturrock just lays off easy balls and with his back to goal is an easy player for a defender to mark as he is usually going nowhere. Shame about the abuse for Harrold as although he was poor for us he was playing at a higher level than this and did give 100% in his time here. He is just an average Division 2 striker. The only plus point was the performance of Sawyer.

Their first goal decent? No. Handball.

Sawyer offers nothing. Just goes sideways. What else does he do? Nothing, that's why Chelsea, Southend twice and Barnet chucked him out. All sizzle and no sausage.

Once again sturrock had a stinker, corr was poor, would like to see sawyer and paterson come in, coughlan who has been solid should be back soon but will Paul ever drop his son? Somehow i dont think so

The most blatant HANDBALL i think I have ever seen ,and to see the linesman laughing later for the the 1st decent!!!

Oh dear. Didn't really have Shrewsbury fans down for 'the scum of the earth' obviously wrong!

There was also a chant of 'you're going home in a southend ambulance' and they made ****** signs at him as he went past. Just from a small section of them, but that small section are absolute scum.

Beg to differ. Sawyer created more in the 25 mins or so he was on then the rest of the Southend midfield combined. He ran with the ball to feet, rather than pump it up in ther air for otehrs to chase. if you can't see that.....?

yeh think sawyer done well in getting the ball down and running at their players and trying to find a way through, would like to see him start a game and see what he can do for us then.
