I think Sturrock played 3-5-2 to counteract Crewe's system, there have been 22 goals in the last 3 Crewe games. It didn't work tho.

Did he not think to himself that they might have been going through a freak spell, instead of thinking that it was to do with any particular 'system' that they play? This is League 2 for Christ's sake, not the Champions League. It doesn't matter how we'd have set-up today, Crewe never looked like they were going to run riot.

Sturrock is over-thinking it WAAAAAAAAAY too much. Just play the 4-4-2 and let the players get on with it and express themselves.

This game was lost before a ball was kicked. The players are incapable of playing this formation - there was no cohesion, no team pattern , in short nobody knew what they were supposed to be doing (or, if they did, they aren't good enough to carry it out). Sturrock opted to line up against the free-scoring Crewe with the same defence which caved into Port Vale + Johnny Herd! Good grief - we got what we deserved.
Ratings :-

Morris - 5 - OK apart from the second goal, but has to take the major blame for that.

Clohessy - 6 - not as comfortable as usual, but the best of the back 5.

Coughlan - 3 - dodgy for both goals and his distribution was horrendous.

Prosser - 2 - almost as bad as against Port Vale. Not League quality.

Barker - 4 - his poorest game for us.

Herd - 4- a couple of decent crosses, but woeful defending and gave the ball away too often.

Soares - 4- runs around a lot, but neither creative nor productive.

Timlin - 5 - a mixture of the good and bad, but never protects the defence like Easton.

Grant - 7 - Our only hope today. Our best player by a country mile.

Paterson - 2 - I never want to see him again in a Southend shirt. I can always forgive limited ability, but not a lack of effort. I hold him responsible for the first goal when he failed to challenge for a ball played into the centre circle and that was typical of his approach all game.

Fairhurst - 1- Can't give him more than that. An absolute waste of space and an incredible miss at 0-0. Sturrock's ventures into the loan market don't look very inspiring.

Subs:-

Crawford - 5 - added a bit of endeavour, but got no service.

Hall - 7- Brought some pace and guile to the proceedings. Should have started.

Jarvis - 4 - still haven't seen anything from this lad. Send him back to Cardiff.

This is the theory that I subscribe to. He seems to think he's managing Man Utd and can play whatever system he fancies and have his world class players adapt to it. Not happening, pal.

Support your club whoever is in charge, blah blah, yeah I get it. But it is becoming more of a chore to watch this dross with each passing week. Bad, bad, bad management. I want him gone, and I want him to take his **** tactics and his nasty style of football with him.

If we were going to make these kind of statements after one particularly bad performance, then Tilson would've been gone long before RM eventually cast the axe. I value your opinion on these boards as they're largely more rounded than 95% of regular posters, but I do think that kind of judgement is rash.

I thought Herd played quite well today actually.

I thought he was absolutely abysmal.

It's hard to see where we've come from and where we go from here, to be quite honest. To start with, I could see why we went with a solid three at the back and two wing-backs, as Crewe pressed with a front three onto our back line in the first half and looked to mount pressure, which is something I understand they've done continually this season (which would explain their freakish results). However, we were all over the place today. Either we weren't familiar with the formation at all, in which case we shouldn't have played it, or the players went completely to pot when it actually mattered, in which case individuals have to be held accountable.

I felt for Barker today. He's generally a consistent performer, but he had Herd gifting possession to the opposition to his left, and Coughlan doing the same to his right, leaving him conducting the job of three people himself. Clohessy was great, as always, and probably the best of an awful, awful bunch defensively. Coughlan didn't do an awful lot wrong in this field, but his distribution was abysmal. Prosser, again, I felt for. He struggled positionally, which was largely down to Johnny, Johnny Herd. Herd, IMO, was all over the place. His positioning was terrible, his distribution even worse and I genuinely can't think of a performance that played into the opposition's hand as much as Herd's today. I know I haven't been his biggest fan in the past and I know how this might come across, but I genuinely cannot see where Herd goes from here. I'm led to believe he spent a week with Crewe earlier this month, and they must've known exactly how to get to him.

In midfield, Grant and Timlin toiled but were let down massively by those around them. Soares was massively hit and miss and needed to get involved more, but Herd was miles off where he should've been and there was absolutely no balance in the team whatsoever.

Up top, the less said the better. Fairhurst, I just can't see what he offers the team at all. He's not quick, he's not good in the air and he certainly doesn't look predatory... Him and Paterson both shyed away from sticking their foot in when the ball was whipped in, and it cost us a goal in the second half... Both PS and TW went bat**** mental when Pato/Fairhurst failed to get anything on Soares' deep cross, and it led directly to Crawford being brought on who definitely looked to be more effective.

It's been said that we're a Jekyll and Hyde side at the moment, and that was more than evident today. I'm trying not to put today's blame at anybody's door, but Herd's performance enrages me every time I think about it. For the second goal, Barker had to drag himself out wide as Herd was woefully out of position and, when the cross came in, Herd was nowhere to be seen. Yes, Morris should've done better, but nobody even attempted to get anything on the delivery.

Tactically, it's hard to tell. We went in with a system that directly led to our downfall, which leads me to think that either we weren't prepared for it at all, or it just didn't translate to the playing field. Either way, it was to blame for todays abysmal showing and PS needs to learn that this crop of players don't look like functioning in a system other than 4-4-2 or, at a push, 4-3-3/4-5-1.

Ratings, for Pringello's benefit.

Morris - 6 - Distribution was good as ever and was tragically let down for the goals.
Clohessy - 6 - Easily our best signing this Summer, with Corr a close runner up.
Barker - 6 - Let down by those around him
Coughlan - 5 - Defensively sound, anything else was terrible
Prosser - 5 - If he was meant to play CB, then he was good enough aside from one slip. If he was meant to play LB, he was out of position most of today.
Herd - 4 - Less said the better
Grant - 7 - Never say die attitude, yet again.
Timlin - 7 - Class act when things were going his way, showed some spirit when it wasn't.
Soares - 6 - Difficult to judge as we were so imbalanced.
Fairhurst - 4 - Bye.
Paterson - 5 - Ineffectual, needs to develop a pair of testicles and put his body on the line for the cause.

Subs - Hall - 7 - We looked a far better outfit when he was introduced with, funnily enough, more balance.
Jarvis - 5 - Pretty ineffecutal, but the game was long gone by the time he came on.
Crawford -6 - Impressive work rate.

3-5-2 is absurd.

Why when we won 3 and drawn 1 of the last 5,and out played the opposition away when we lost did he change the tactics?!

Its hard enough gelling the team that had no pre season without changing to stupid tactics.

Baffling.

Very very poor, there just seems to be no passion, belief or desire when we play at home.
We seriously need to sort out our home performances and fast.
If this carries on we will seriously be in big trouble.

Glenn Morris - 6. Job done for most of the game. Not sure if he commanded enough for their second goal.
Sean Clohessy - 5. Did ok.
Graham Coughlan - 5. Likewise.
Anthony Grant - 7. Slightly generous, perhaps. But head and shoulders above everyone else in a blue shirt.
Matt Paterson - 4. Didn't do a lot.
Luke Prosser - 4. Biggest culprit for giving up possession.
Louie Soares - 4. Didn't look great in the middle of the park.
Johnny Herd - 3. Ineffective as a winger/wing-back. Out of depth as left-back.
Michael Timlin - 4. Some dodgy passing, and giving up of possession. Not done himself any favours if he wants another months loan.
Waide Fairhurst - 4. Didn't do a lot either.
Chris Barker - 6. Again, did ok.

Ryan Hall - 6
Harry Crawford - 5.
Nathaniel Jarvis - 5.

If we played away at Crewe you could almost understand the tactics today. But we was at home ffs. Yes, they have scored goals. But, they have also failed to win on the road, until today. They are the draw specialists, have a leaky defence and we should of gone for the jugular this afternoon. Changing the formation so dramatically for the visit of the likes of Crewe (No disrespect to them, they made us look like ***** today) just goes to show how far we have fallen. All on the back of a decent run of form as well.

Some strange views by some people on here tonight.. I can only assume you have been bamboozled by the tactics

Sturrock not taking blame on radio for the poor passionless show- fair enough, but should for playing that formation. It didnt work and never looked like working.
From the reaction of Widds and Sturrock during game I think Paterson may have played his last game for us. I thought Crawford looked excellent when he came on - seemed to play like a proper centre forward. Fairhurst is wasted in that role but did nothing for me. Shame as he looked good last week.

Thanks.

I can see where you're coming from, but it's not a rash judgement from me. I've been unhappy about things since the first ball was kicked against Stockport; I've often been unhappy when we haven't even lost. Yes we've won 4 league games this season, but much more often than not, tactics have been negative and stifling for our own players, and the style of football has been horrible and boring. There is a good bunch of players here, a bunch of players that could have this club pushing for the play-offs. But the management is letting them down. They're not world beaters and they can't deal with all of these silly elaborate tactics and all of the needess tinkering. Sturrock hasn't got the basics right with them yet. He just needs to set them up in a 4-4-2 and tell them to go out there, enjoy the game and express themselves. They need some freedom. But his tactics stifle them and put the shackles on, and the style of football is awful and just doesn't play to the strengths of several of our potentially dangerous players.

I'm just not enjoying watching the football at the moment. I will always support my club, but at the end of the day, you need to enjoy what you're seeing too. And I'm just not. I'm finding it a chore at the moment, a chore to go to see us play sides who, man-for-man, we could and should be defeating but instead are losing to. Losing without a fight, and losing whilst playing an awful, awful style of football which just sends me to sleep. A lot of the sides that we've lost to, we've sat back against. I just haven't seen the side come out at the start of a match and just go for the throat and really take the game to the opposition. If Sturrock told them to do that, maybe there'd be more wins on the board. Today, Aldershot, Gillingham, Northampton, Port Vale, Morecambe, Lincoln.....I've seen more awful matches and more dire/depressing/clueless/BORING Southend performances so far this season than I have in the last 7 years. I hate losing as much as the next person, but I don't mind losing quite as much if I see some fight and if I see that the team have gotten the ball down and tried to play some attractive, incisive and attacking football. What I've seen so far this season is none of those things, even in some of the matches that we've won.

The players looked passionless because half of them didn't appear to know where they were or what they were doing. Because THEY were bamboozled by the tactics. Ultimately, the blame for today lies at Sturrock's door.

Definitly the wrong formation, even when it was changed we still has players in their incorrect placings, Herd is a left back not a midffilelder still he will soon be at Lincoln!!
I give all of them 4 except Timlin who I will give 5 to.

Worst display so far we may only be 4 points off play offs but we are closer to the bottom!!
Patterson just looked lost and not interested, we need someone to take charge of the team on the pitch and marshall them. Forget this formation it does not work!!!!

Ratings

Morris - 6 looked solid until the 2nd goal which he has to take the blame for
Clohessy - 5 OK nothing great going forward though
Herd - 6 was delighted to see him start but by the end wondered why he did. I would prefer Gilbert any day
Coughlan - 4 stay reserve team coach and stay as far away as possible from first team, all he done was hoof the ball
Prosser - 4 useless, don't know why we signed him, Phillips should have started instead.
Barker - 6 nothing dramatic but didn't do anything today, worst performance for us this season
Grant - 7 had a few good shots but looked lackluster and didn't want to chase the ball MOTM
Timlin - 5 like this lad and have been impressed but today he was awful, continuously gave the ball away
Soares - 5 don't understand why he plays, no creativity or desire to play.
Paterson - 4 can't blame him he had no service
Fairehurst - 4 again had little service but still am wondering how he missed that chance in the first half from 3 yards.

Subs
Crawford - 5 done more than the 2 strikers that started
Hall - 6 should start ahead of soares any day, looked lively but done very little
Jarvis - 5 don't know why we bothered to get him on loan if each game he only gets 10 minutes

Ref - 3 poor, didn't know what he was doing half the time

TBV - 8 - good but seemed a bit desperate towards the end with the get martin out chants

What where those chants near the end of the game, sound like; "[somebody] out". Anyone clear that up for me?

We should stick to 442. I travelled back from Chesterfield last week fairly happy because despite losing we played well and deserved a point. Today we played 352 amd lost all our shape and looked awful.

Sturrock is becoming another tinkerman with his tactical switches, 3 -5- 2 did not work today. His decision to play Soares and not Hall baffles me completely and some of his signings are clearly not up to Football League standard. Our two legendary and superb managers, Webby and Tilly both opted for 4-4-2 systems and rightly let the opposition worry about us rather than fiddle around, especially against teams in the bottom half of Division 2!
The best thing for me today were the "Martin Out" chants from the guys in the West Stand, well done lads. Martin has dragged into the dirt the club we all love, the fans should upset him as much as he has upset part of our lives with his sacking of Tilly and Brush, the ******** about the stadium, financial woes, owing fans money etc etc etc.
He should be given as much grief as possible. We all know that there is a consortium of mainly Blues fans interested in taking over, there may be other interested parties too.. Martin could yet be hounded out before he eventually goes bust and has to sell anyway.
Just being passive is giving him an easier time than he deserves.
