Memory Lane Southend Town Centre

Totally agreed on Chelmsford.

In comparison to Southend, it's so much more pleasurable an experience.

Southend could be as good, but it needs a huge overhaul, IMHO, with the shops moved to the seafront end and the rail station end being more for a retail park experience with parking, cinemas, maybe a concert venue and chain restaurants, supporting the University already there.

As for the traffic management schemes!

Inside Talza arcade..

Southend High Street looking down to Pier Hill with The London Hotel on the left, also at the junction with Tyler's Avenue, note the Clock in the centre that has just been refurbished and is still there.

That's a great thing that R.A.Jones clock is working again!

Like you say, Kaymac, some superb pictures.

Southend High Street during the War II, you can see R A Jones jewellers store and the famous clock after the was badly damaged by a German bombing raid.

That second photo is tough to date.

The Tavern in the Town is still there, yet McDonald's is also there.

Has McD's really been here that long!?

EDIT : You beat me to it, Hypo!

The 1st McDonalds in Southend was that one near Tylers. It opened in July 1978

McDonald's first outlet, at the southern end of the High Street, opened on July 19, 1978.

Regal cinema in Tylers Avenue demolished in 1963....now the site of the job-centre..

A view back down Victoria Avenue in the early 60's before it was decimated for the new 'Gateway', St Mary's back right....
