Memory Lane Southend Town Centre

Things I should have known.

It's called Southend as it was at the "South End" of Prittlewell Priory.

I really should know that!

All the old familiar stores have gone such as Brightwells, Bermans, Garons, Dixons, RA Jones etc and latterly Woolworths and BHS. No character at all nowadays as a shopping centre, same applies to the erosion of Hamlet Court Road which has since lost Havens. All part of the SBC masterplan no doubt, rather like flattening all the houses along Victoria Avenue to create the 'Victoria Gateway' back in the 60's....dreadful waste of money!

I can't believe you didn't know that! Thought everyone who lives here did!

I've never lived in Southend, or an SS postcode. Just support the team as Southend and Col U are the closest pro teams to Chelmsford and I'm not gonna support Col U am I!!! Never knew why Southend was called Southend until now.

Ravens , Keddies and kelleys records too

Meanwhile Chelmsford appears to be thriving with a more than decent modern shopping centre that puts Southend's facilities to shame.

But you don't live here so you're excused!

On the corner of Victoria Avenue and Southchurch Road the Talza Arcade had access from Victoria Ave, Southchurch Rd and Broadway Market. This indoor market was enlarged by H. Garon's (3 shops). A tobacconist, furniture shop and Bata's shoe shop, also The Bluebird Cafe which was always full with bus drivers and conductors day and night. About 30 shops sold books, clothes, model aeroplanes, pet shop (they kept a monkey in the window) also a sweet shop, grocers, butchers and more. Above the arcade was a snooker hall, several Blues players could be found there on the morning of a home match. With three entrances at times the arcade would be a wind tunnel with paper, cigarette packets etc. blowing around. During rationing the arcade sweet shop and the one at 14 London Road sold boiled sweets. No ration books were required as customers had to supply their own sugar when purchasing sweets as well as money.
