Southend at this level

Matt_CUFC

Youth Team
Afternoon chaps,

Just reading our local paper up here today and the line is that if we finish above twelfth this season, it is a new high for Essex clubs.

Does that sound about right? This isn't a "look at us, we're higher than you" type post, but just wondered whether, during your previous stay at this level, whether you'd been higher than twelfth?

12th was indeed our highest finish back in 1991/92.

We were top on 01/01/92 - for a few hours :hilarious:

Yes spot on.
Highest we've ever finished was 12th in 91/92.
Highest we've ever BEEN was higher than you as you've not hit top spot of this division!

Heh, that's true, we had to make do with fifth place :)

I thought that Southend had, at some point, been higher than twelfth due to the stuff I've read on here, but wondered if they'd finished higher than that.

Thanks!

Our promotion to the old 'division 2' was (I think) the start of the infamous run of years without ever finishing in the top half of any division. 12 years, I believe, which at the time was some kind of record.

:o

Did you have any notable cup runs during that time?

I think, with us (and hopefully you) staying up this year, then success in this division in future years for us will be similar to what we have done this year - middle third of the table and then throw in a cup run every other year to give something extra.

Did you have any notable cup runs during that time?

Not really. Got to the 5th round on a couple of occasions I think and had some great away days at Everton and Sheff Wed in particular - but no 'run' has been that memorable.

Our most successful cup exploits were reserved for this season!

Oh, and there was the glorious LDV run of course. Now, a day out at the Millenium Stadium to watch your team in a cup final, that's something you'd never want to miss out on... :)

Heh, I know, must have been fun.

We will just make do with our three visits to the old Wembley in the 90s

Same old Col Ewe...

You'd generally have more luck trying to procure sexual favours from the Pope than getting them to acknowledge that record on our part and now all of a sudden, when they think they might beat it, they're all too happy to focus on it.

How does your highest finish compare to that of your "real" rivals (for the moment) just up the A12?

As in the original post, this is not a "look, we're doing better than you" thread.

I simply thought that Southend had managed a finish higher than twelfth but, in retrospect, may have been thinking of Cambridge who had that notable season just before the Premier League started.

And look at them now!

Ah, there Cambridge are!

As I say, look at that top half, only Blackburn and Middlesbrough have made significant upward progress since then.

Cambridge tho... :(

Edit: And as for the "typical Col Ewe" comment a couple of posts ago that I replied to, the interest was also to see how our best season stacks up.

Might as well enjoy the good times - as you know from your rollercoaster ride, the rug can be pulled from underneath you when you least expect it and that's particularly pertinent when you look at how Cambridge's fortunes have changed.

So basically you all want us to join in with a chant of "Lets all laugh at Cambridge"? :p

Us Cambridge and Grimsby all won consecutive promotions (3 teams going from 4 to 3 to 2 is unlikely to be repeated) and at one stage in the season all 3 were in the top ten of the 2nd Division.

And we tonked newcastle 4-0 !!

:hilarious:

No, because then I would be accused (again) of selecting our rivalries to fit

If the shoe fits...

If I wanted to find out something about Col Ewe's history which might possibly represent a point scored over them, should I:

A) Look it up on Soccerbase like anybody else?

or

B) Pop over to a Col Ewe forum and post an innocently worded request for that information, then feign shock when told where to go?

Hmmm...

:guns:
