Large parts of w block. 0/10. Its easy to sing when winning. But do you really think the abuse of Smith helped? Do you not think that paid a part in his performance. Well done! By the way I stand in w block and am as upset and shell shocked as everyone else but I support the team or shut up

I'd rather lose like that, than labour to a mind numbing long ball 0-1 defeat.

And if we are going to ship 5 at home, I'd much rather we did it in the JPT than the League.

I think PB will have learned a lot more about certain players on the back of that.

Bentley is our #1 keeper
He needs at least two defenders (Phillips isn't fit that much and Prosser is struggling)
Payne and Clifford are worth a run in the team
We should never play one up front on their own, unless its Corr
Reid is at best a reserve.
Timlin is a shadow of the player before his injury

Absolute shambolic school boy defending!! Its so easy to blame Smith for 2 of the goals but before you do ask yourself;

How did their player get so much space on the left wing for the 3rd?

What possessed Prosser to ignore the call of Smith for the 5th and head it past him?

When are we going to learn to defend set pieces no matter who is in goal!!

The Abuse of Smith was disgraceful, as mentioned on another thread we need to support the team through the game and vent our frustrations after, no matter what, Dan Bentley may be a "fans player" but ask him if he felt the abuse of Smith was fair.
Phil Brown has the "luxury" of 4 defenders and due to the financial mis-management of a certain person has a job to do with hand tied behind his back, if you want to voice your anger direct it where it is deserved.

Woodrow and Payne came out of this mess with their heads held high, ALL the others need to have a good look at themselves and ask if they could have given more.

Smith - 4 Guessing that bar injuries, this will be his last game for the club. Nice guy but good riddance
White - 6 Tidy at times but exposed second half with no support infront of him. Sadly not a leader of men
Prosser - 4 I am a Prosser fan but had one of his worst performances in a Blues shirt tonight
Phillips - 5 Rusty, lacks match fitness and can't pass wind but we need him in the side.
Coker - 6 Tries hard, quality link up play but also exposed at times by pacey Daggers attacking players
Timlin - 5 Poor distribution and needs that testing 50/50 tackle, but it's minutes under his belt
Clifford - 6 liability in a tackle but tenacious, poor ball cost us in build up to a goal (set piece from it).
Payne - 8 Made tonight worthwhile, always wants the ball, passes well and has raw pace.
Hurst - 4 Once again, I am a huge fan but when he has the odd stinker like tonight, you don't get much else effort wise.
Straker - 5 What does he actually give us?
Reid - 5 Held the ball up well at times against the entire backline but no support aound him. Unfit but thats due to lack of games.

Subs
Woodrow - 8 Getting better with each game
Corr - N/A Why leave it until 88th minute to introduce a second forward when your 5-2 down?
Atkinson - 6 Tries but lacks that bit of quality

Oh dear. The first half was bland in the extreme. Second half started off fantastically well as we turned it round before what can only be described as the most shambol1c defending I've ever seen at Roots Hall, 4 goals in 8 minutes was it? And it could have been more. We actually looked quite decent going forward in the second half with Payne at the heart of most of it.

Smith 2 - He came for a cross in the first half and got it, what happened?!?!
White 4 - The whole defence must take responsibility for that cluster****.
Coker 5 - Got forward well but left us exposed to D&R's pacey forwards
Prosser 2 - I like Luke but...
Phillips 3 - [see above]
Timlin 4 - nowhere
Clifford 7 - played quite well, put himself about, looked to push forward, really should have scored.
Payne 8 MOM - At the heart of everything good, the creative spark we've been lacking.
Straker 5 - Tried too hard sometimes & final product lacking.
Hurst 7 - Linked up well with Payne and Woodrow
Reid 4 - nowhere

subs
Woodrow 8 - Energetic, took his goals well, caused Dagenham problems
Atkinson N/A - too late to make any difference
Corr N/A - too late to make any difference

Surprised in some of the marks given to Hurst. Some on here have given him 4, which is a joke right? The guy never stopped running tonight, put in a few good crosses and some not so good. It was his shot that led to the second goal as well. He remains one of our more consistent performers and also creative players

Strange night really, thought we passed the ball well in the 1st 20 mins, but playing Reid upfront basically on his own didn't work. Defending was woeful for all the goals. Payne is gonna be a tidy little player. Timlin I'm hoping will get better, cause he certainly put effort in, just suprising how misplaced his passes were.
If we could just get the solid defending of last year with the creativity of this year we would be a very good side.

I think some people have allowed the result to cloud their judgement. We were the far superior team in the first half, playing some good football but the set up was wrong from the off. Poor Craig Reid is not the man to play a loan striker role, he kept going out wide with the ball leaving no-one in the middle, much improved from that aspect once Cauley came on. Delighted for him, needed those goals and hopefully that will have done his confidence in front of goal the world of good.

Can someone explain to me what the point was of putting Atkinson on for Straker? At that stage we should have been chasing the game and putting Corr on. Midfield were doing ok, I didn't have a problem with Straker being replaced as he couldn't do much right, but to not bring Corr on until 7 minutes from the end or so, chasing a 5-2 deficit is practically criminal.

For all his running, I thought Payne looked a little out of his depth in a 3 man midfield, it needed Leonard or Atkinson on from the start there with Payne introduced at the kind of time Atkinson was. I blame last night's loss entirely on the shoulders of Phil Brown. He treated that match with the same kind of disdain Prem managers do a lowly team draw in the FA Cup 3rd round. He clearly doesn't understand the significance of the trophy to lower league teams. Plus, he's the man that sees Paul SMith training every day, he must have thought he was ready.

Smith - 3, ok 1st half but whatever he once had to have played at the kind of level he did, it's long gone. Time to retire old son
White - 6, kept going
Phillips - 6, looked fit enough to me, thankfully, as we'll need him Saturday!
Prosser - 5, composed at times, but was caught out a few times too
Coker - 7, my MOTM, never stopped, tremendous outlet and great crossing
Clifford - 7, ran Coker close
Payne - 5, little lightweight at time
Timlin - 5, some terrible passing 1st half, but much better when defending the back line
Hurst - 7, another who kept going and kept crossing and challenging
Reid - 6, did ok, just unfortunate
Straker - 4, no, not enough

Subs:
Woodrow for Reid - 7, delighted, best game in a Blues shirt
Atkinson for Straker - 6, should have started
Corr for Prosser - 5, did nothing, far too late - and why for Prosser anyway who could have gone up top and done a Mohsni? We needed height up front against a susceptible keeper

Whilst I often agree with you OBL, I'm not sure I can agree on your scores for the defence or Payne. While Smith was terrible, the defence left him horribly exposed (and yes that is in part down to El Tango's tactics). The fullbacks never seemed to be in the right position leaving an obviously unfit Phillips & lacking in confidence Smith unprotected (not enough support from midfield?), and Prosser with too much to do (he looked excellent in the first half I thought). As for Payne, yes he's small, but he drew a lot of fouls because of that, and without him we wouldn't have got our two goals, he just seemed to be able to drift past players, I was very impressed with him.

Timlin is a shadow of the player before his injury

There's been a lot of emotional outpourings on here, unsurprisingly, but thank you Lord Football for the most sensible post so far that sums up my thoughts too.

Smith had a poor night, but didn't deserve the abuse he got from our own supporters during or after the game - Straker must have been delighted Smith was playing as it stopped the so-called fans abusing him all night!

We sold our best central defender (Cresswell) and have not replaced him - that is clear. We got rid of Barker and replaced him with Bennett who was unlucky to get a bad injury during his first appearance (I don't buy the crock thing as the injury he sustained was unrelated and on the other leg to his previous ones).

Reid was given a chance to prove himself last night and didn't take it - I don't think the system suited him to be fair, but even so Woodrow showed a lot more desire when he came on and deserved his goals.

Timlin is not 100% fit physically or mentally yet - OK to play him in the JPT as part of his rehabilitation, but leave him as a reserve in the league please.

Payne is a great little player, but better attacking than defending.

Of the goals we shipped last night,
  • the one in the first half was dubious - both for a potential offside and a handball - linesman missed both!
  • one was John White's fault - way out of position leaving their left winger with so much time and space to put the cross in
  • one was initially Timlin's fault for a misplaced pass which then put Coker under pressure and led to him committing the foul (still should have defended the set-piece though!)
  • one was jointly Prosser and Smith's fault - mis-communication - this is the 2nd comedy goal Prosser has gifted the opposition at home this year!
  • the one from the corner was initially a good save from Smith but he couldn't hold it and nobody was tracking the forward who popped in the rebound

This business of defending set-pieces is becoming a huge issue now - we missed having Barry Corr on the pitch for these last night as he is quite influential. Phillips is still not looking fully fit and Prosser is only good enough to be a back up at centre back, shouldn't be first choice. Thompson has come in, but is just a kid and certainly no replacement for Cresswell.

Unfortunately until the chairman sorts out the football-related debt and annual accounts, we're going to remain under embargo and Brown, Penney and Coughlan are going to have to do the best they can with what they've got. Clearly on last night's evidence that is going to be the equivalent of trying to make the proverbial silk purse out of a sow's ear!

Totally agree with both of you

I couldn't go last night , but listened to the first half on BBC Essex , with Glenn Pennyfather as the pundit.
Now for those who didn't listen , Glenn ( who usually has a sound view IMO ) , said that the half time scoreline of 0-1 was really unwarranted , and the goal aside , Southend dominated and played some really good passing football.
He added that Dagenham were lethargic and not in the game at all.
I couldn't listen to the 2nd half , but got text updates that we had scored 2 in the first 10 minutes , so fully expected us to win quite comfortably.
What happened next has been well documented , and too painful to revisit , but just wanted to know from 'people that did go' whether Glenns summary of the first half was accurate or not ?

on the radio last night they said that either they hadn't interviewed PB yet, or didn't have time to air it -I'm not sure which , but that it would be broadcast this morning. Did anyone hear it ?

I think dominated is a little OTT, but we were the better team IMO --and we had a couple of good chances . Our defence seemed certain that the goal was Off side- I have no idea from where I stand

I was in East Yellows so couldn't see what the fault/blame was for their first goal; but had a great view of the others. The "foul" that was given for their 2nd was not one, the Daggers player tripped on his own foot! And then Luke wasn't close to cut off/impede his players run or get in the way. Smith had a few howlers but he did shout he was coming for the ball that Luke then headed for the 5th. By this time confidence and team working at the back had gone. Generally we are too small and light at the back without BCCC on to help out at times when needed.

Just seen the "highlights". I can see no issue at all with the first goal. Not even nearly offside.

Didn't look offside at first view and clearly not offside on the highlights. Makes Prosser's yellow look even more stupid.
