Hi from a lurking Gillingham fan.

The whole injury crisis\bare bones thing has been a bit overblown on this forum.
We don’t currently have a backup right back or left back, and our only backup central defender is a 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] year pro, yet to make a league start. So we still have some squad gaps to fill.
Our starting XI however is still strong, and our bench still had more options than yours in my eyes.
We have had some nasty injuries in preseason, the main problem this has given us is limiting our formation options. We have lost our only defensive midfielder in (Morris (who also covered RB and CH) and both our left wingers in Martin and Garmston. So we can’t play wingbacks, or anyone wide left in a 442.
Tuesday could be interesting as the manager wants to rest Oshilaja, who missed most a pre-season. So we look like we will be playing a youngster on debut in central defence.
If we give Hadler a chance in goal it will also be his pro debut, but I don’t see us making many more changes.

Please rest JET.

He must be very tired and you need to save him for league games.

I haven't seen a striker bully us like JET did on Saturday since we played Southampton in the Championship season and Kenwyne Jones tore us to shreds

He certainly was a big old unit. Watching him from the South Upper, when he got going on a run from South to North Bank, it was quite a scary sight.

I think the blame rests totally at the feet of PB on this one. How could he get his views and alter things in the 2nd half, when he's sitting in the stands. IMO he should be by the touchline managing the players. His pointless outburst at the officials at end of last season (why bother, when it's the last game) has cost us dearly.

One of the most powerful performances I've seen from a centre forward. When we've played against Akinfenwa in the past he's a handful but he isn't very tall and doesn't have pace, he just holds it well. JET's performance on Saturday was near perfect and I'm incredibly jealous he's on that side of the bridge.

We have him for the season so I presume QPR will let him play on Tuesday. His capture has given us a massive lift and was a real coup for us. When I first saw the rumours online I gave it a 0% chance of happening.

It sounds like we had a bid turned down, but then we used the 150k we got from Swindon for Norris, to top up our offer to QPR. Bit like trading in a Ford for a Ferrari. Just a shame it is on on a lease!

I said much earlier in this thread that Gillingham could be dark horses for a promotion place. If JET does that sort of stuff to other FL1 defences they maybe slightly better than dark horses. Now, if our lone Ranger snaps into gear and form, maybe we could yet be pleasantly surprised.

I really hope his form on Saturday was a blip and he's completely rubbish for the rest of the season.

Well if my boss called me in for a meeting on my day off due to the 'alarmingly poor' performance of my team, I wouldn't be expecting a payrise, that's for sure.

We don't know that it was a day off, with another match on tomorrow?

Having done really well for the first 30 minutes with McGlashan on the right and McLaughlin on the left why did they switch wings for the whole of the second half when they were both on the pitch. Both of them are very one footed and had to always stop and check back in on their wrong wings.

Who was on the post for the first Gillingham goal and why didn't he clear it? Even though Thompson got blocked off he still turned his back on the shot.

Oxley should clearly have caught the lob into the box leading to the throw for the second goal or at least get fouled trying to claim it.

And the pass from McLaughlin to King for the third goal was appalling and then everyone backed off.

All three goals conceded were completely avoidable.

There are too many players left from last season with shot confidence and it soon spread to Demetriou and Oxley.

Already people critical of Oxley. Can't say I'm surprised as some of the things mentioned were also mentioned by those Hibs fans happy to wave him goodbye

Better a lease than not at all.

Far too good for this level.

Perhaps he'll do a Barnett and stop trying after his first few games - too late for us though.

Trouble is, the rest of the Gills squad are not really up to it.

I would swap squads tomorrow given the chance. We have no midfield whatsoever and they had better than we started with on the bench. Dack and Wright were absolute class and ran the show.

I'm confused ? Why am I confused ?

McGlashen : "the jurys out" ?? He's played one bloody game !!!

Payne : of course he will be difficult to replace, he was out of contract and went to a Championship Team. HOWEVER, as I stated previously, we have bought in Cox ( clearly a creator or chances, as he did on Saturday) , Ranger ( an attacker) and also looking at Simpson.... I am still confused as to why you think I am confused. We created 2 clear chances on Saturday, after the goal, to go in 3 up !

You don't like PB, yep, loud and clear ... but please don't start stating I am confused when its abundantly clear I'm not ! Also, I've already stated on another thread that if we do get Simpson and the results stay the same, then yes, probably a change will be required, meaning that I'm not a PB blinded supporter, however I do think that after 1 game, people get a little more time ( unlike you, who thinks that after 1 game the jury is out on McGlashen ...)

Sorry to upset you but I saw McGlashen destroy us when playing for Cheltenham. 1 Game for us yes, but a whole season for Gillingham and they weren't sad to see him leave ! The jury is out because he has to prove he can reproduce the form he had at Cheltenham. I wasn't condemning McGlashen as I was excited when he signed but merely pointing out he has a point to prove. I thought he may have been fired up against his old team but sadly not. I hope he can reproduce the form that made him a hot prospect at Cheltenham !

And by the way, 'The Jury's Out' doesn't mean he's crap, it means we haven't seen enough to make a judgement, unless of course, you think differently so just calm down after '1 bloody game'!

God you are touchy but my point was that we haven't replaced the creativity we had with Payne and Worrall and Cox is effectively a striker.

And as for PB, I'm not a fan as you clearly state. We have Brown, a defender as manager, and Coughlan, a Centre Half, as his assistant but cannot defend set pieces, neither last year and yes, only 1 game gone, but apparently this year also. Simply no excuse.

You clearly love PB as I noted in another post to another poster 'Sorry if that upsets the eqlibrium of your hatred of PB'and in another 'You hate Brown ... We get that' . Please remember everyone has their own opinion.

Last year just check how many goals we conceded within the first few minutes of the second half, and what happens on Saturday, we capitulate straight after half time. What the hell does he say at half time ! A wasted 4 match ban for mouthing off at officials in a nothing end of season game just about sums him up.

Sorry but I'd like a manager who worries about results and who could put his effort and heart solely into his club management career.

Even though he was up against a decent/canny full back on Saturday, the Gills paid him the compliment of doubling up on him from the first whistle.

Long thread, not particularly inclined to read it all so....

Were we booed off on Saturday? I was in the Family Stand and don't remember hearing any.

Reason I ask is that in today's Racing Post, they tip up Gills to beat us again tonight and mention how we were booed off on Saturday. News to me.

I'm personally not pro-Brown and I'm not anti-Brown either. I hope he can get the best out of this team this season and we can kick on. Having said that I believe the points regarding having an ex-RB as a manager and an ex-CB as his assistant are very much valid - to be so, so poor at defending set-plays with these two in charge is absolutely criminal in my book and it's been an achilles heel for more than a full season now.
