Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southampton 3-1 Southend United

If indeed Moussa does want to stay and we can keep himself and Grant for next season it will be a very good central combination for league 2. Build round those in the middle, Scannell on the right and an out and out winger [maybe from non-league] on the left and that would be a very good league 2 midfield, doubt there'd be any better.

Great day out, good performance from the team really against a team who don't deserve to be facing another season in league 1 in my opinion. Couple of comments, why was Dan Harding not booked for that late handball right in front of us? Anyone else notice Lee Barnard sitting next to Adam Barrett in amongst our "extras"? And I thought there was a suspicion of offside for their 3rd. Shame about the eventual score because I thought for probably the first hour of the match we were more than equal, it was really down to their substitutions. Macca always gives out loads of kit at the final game of the season, Mildy always does his gloves, it was good to see some of the others doing it as well this time. Where was Tilly at the end though?

Mildy - 7, made some very good saves and a much better performance overall, just let down by kicking again
Franno - 6, quiet game for him, couple of good set pieces, but think he was having to defend more than usual
M'voto - 7, guy is coming on in leaps and bounds now, much more what we wanted and has formed a good partnership with Balders
Baldwin - 7, straight over to the fans at the end, looked genuine in his appreciation. Played well, obviously kept very busy
Herd - 6, looked a little weak against strong opposition
O'Keefe - 7, links very well with others, Macca applauded him at one point for a very intelligent through ball that so nearly came off
Macca - 7, a typically dogged performance by Macca in what I think was so clearly his last game
Grant - 6, thought Granty was a bit quiet, although he was helping out more defensively
Moussa - 7.5, MotM, great goal, and worked very hard throughout
Crawford - 7, like him, he's a strong young man, coped very well with the physicality of the Southampton defenders - and made Harding look a mug at times
Paterson - 7, also thought he did ok, good to see the two youngsters playing from the start, I think it has to be the way to go

Ref: 7, good, balanced bit of reffing, let the game flow well

Crowd: 10, has to be really, absolutely awesome, made me feel so proud.

Too late though to be fair, games like Tranmere away where we NEEDED the support to help get a win!

Also, to be fair, over many years I have yet to spot the correlation between good away support and good away results. Good away crowds have, more often than not, returned home disappointed.

Interesting theory - it cuts both ways I suppose Leeds on one side taking 3 seasons to get out of this league and Norwich only 1

Sorry, probably didn't make that clear. I was referring specifically to Southend matches.

Yeah but is there any real reason though?

Statistically we lose more than we win away from home. Matches which attract the really big turn-outs are the important end of season games (eg Donny, Grimsby etc), Cup ties at big clubs or simply visits to "ex-big club' grounds eg Southampton. On balance we're not going to win many of them anyway. I personally don't think chanting, drums, baloons etc make players better. And if it makes them try harder, that a disgrace because they should be giving their best anyway.

Guess we should not bother then?

By all means, if you enjoy it; just don't expect it to make that much of a difference.

I do think you are wrong there Mick, players have continuously said us fans have been brilliant, and say that it does give them a boost, using us as the 12th man.

Even though we haven't used that 12th man on the pitch, it definitely means something to the players. WITHOUT A DOUBT!

I think that's just a cliche players and managers come out with. Why should it make a difference? If it makes them try harder. they are admitting they wouldn't otherwise be giving 100%. They probably enjoy having good support, who wouldn't. But affecting results? I don't think so, but that's just my opinion.

If he'd stood still and the ball gone in you'd be moaning he didn't move. When the header is that close it's just a reaction. you can't blame him for that.

Ayrshire BLue can blame Mildenhall for anything.

Just seen the goals, great finish from the Moose and from his celebration I think it's clear were he wants to be.

But he was at fault for the cross for the equaliser

Harsh to blame someone for getting beaten on a 2 on 1.

Its quite simple for me, if our away support actually made any difference to the team, the way we played, and the results, we would have won this league comfortably, because our fans away have been Premier League class let alone Div 2
