Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southampton 3-1 Southend United

You guys are excellent, the fans who traveled down today were all brilliant and it's just a shame there wasn't a better footballing match on show to justify the trip.
"That's why we're going down" when Matt Paterson missed the 1v1 was brilliant.
Best of luck next season and I hope you get promoted, but I bloody hope we won't be there to greet you.

Providing you keep Lallana, Lambert and Barnard and I see no reason why you can't keep them, you will walk that league next season. All the best with it.

First away match of the season for me and for 70 minutes what a pleasure it was. We were the better team and the match stats would back us up on that. Intelligent use of substitutes (Tilly take note) seemed to make the difference. Nice ground easy to get to and from apart from me screwing up and missing the Park and Ride, though half a mile from the ground parking and many home fans staying behind helped. I wouldn't read too much into Macca's giving his gear away. He may well be off but I think that was a genuine gesture at the end of a disappointing season.

Highlights for me today were Midly (not often I can say that). Francis, Baldwin and Mvoto and Moussa. Grant and Macca did OK, some good tackling and interceptions making up for poor passing. Jury still out on o'Keefe and Crawford, both need to bulk up but the possibilities are there. Some comments on Patterson are a bit harsh. Been a long while since we ha a forward that wins more than their fair share of headers and he looks to hold the ball up and use others.

Nice ground. Big grounds look good when 2/3rds full. I only hope when FF is built we're a high flying D1 team.

Biggest winners today were the fans. Very proud to have been among them.

Edit, oh dear, I appear to have forgotten about Herd. Four corners in the space of 10 minutes. 3 of them didn't clear the first man. Needs to work hard on his game in the summer

I think Macca has a thing about League 2. Doesn't seem to like it much. I think that's why he originally went back to Preston when he came here on loan.

great day, glad we scored. love southampton as a place. got a soft spot for them now. spent the whole day with a great group of mixed fans. hope they go up next season.

Just seen the goals, great finish from the Moose and from his celebration I think it's clear were he wants to be.

But he was at fault for the cross for the equaliser but for me the keeper can do better, all he has to do is stand up and it hits him in the chest.

Soft penalty for a bloke that size to go down like that, poor defending all round for Lallana's goal.

Oh well. Here's to next season.

Agree with all that.

Nice to know Saints fans have mentioned us in their emails to BBC too!

If he'd stood still and the ball gone in you'd be moaning he didn't move. When the header is that close it's just a reaction. you can't blame him for that.

No, If he'd stood still the ball would have hit him. Much like the goal at Oldham, he jumped out the way of it.

Wasn't up there last time, but heard nothing but positive comments about that match. The atmosphere was fantastic not only for our fans, but for your fans as well. I thought it was a nice gesture upon your fans to not only applaud us after the game, but to applaud us as the Southend Coaches left the ground. I wish you the best of luck next season, I'm sure you will be up there in the top 6 next season! Hope that we play you again soon, really enjoyed the trip!
Once again, good luck for next season,

UTB!

Having seen the goals, it was lovely link up between Herd and Moussa for our goal.

Shoddy defending from M'Voto for their first and second and a pathetic powder puff challenge from McCormack for their third, reminiscent of Oldham's second goal the other week. If we don't defend any better next season, even in the League below, then we have no chance of having a decent campaign.
