Defender joins Southend United following a successful trial.
Southend United are pleased to announce the signing of Jakub Sokolik on a five-month contract until December 31st with a view to a longer-term deal.

The centre-back, joins the Club for a third time following a successful trial in pre-season.

This will be the third time the Czech has played for Southend after enjoying two loan spells earlier in his career.

The defender’s time in England started at the academy of Liverpool in 2013. Whilst at Anfield, Sokolik spent a period on loan at Blues in January 2014, making 12 appearances for the club.

The 22-year-old joined Yeovil Town in the summer of 2014, but was back at Southend in November for a month’s loan in which he made two appearances.

Sokolik made 52 appearances in two years for the Glovers, and Southend Manager, Phil Brown is glad to have him back at Roots Hall on a permanent contract.

“Jakub’s trial with us was certainly a success.” Brown said.

“He has mingled in with the team well, and we’ve seen the old Jakub over these last few weeks.

“That was culminated with a strong 45-minute performance over a talented Newcastle team.

“I think he is one of those rare talents that when he is one hundred percent he would play at the highest level, but when his concentration levels drop he’ll get caught out.

“I think the short-term deal that we’ve put him on will hopefully keep him focused on the field of play so we get the Jakub of old, and if we the Jakub of old I think we’ve got, fingers crossed one of the best centre-backs in the division.

5 months ! - is this a case of a desperate player at a desperate club ?

Hope not as hope that as he is only 22 then he will improve and become a long term replacement for AB.

I am happy to have him back as a Shrimper. How much he plays will be interesting.
I suspect PB may also be considering JW also as CB cover.

Overall i'm happy with both the signing and the length of the contract, if he plays pony every time he gets on the pitch, we can ship him out try someone else out in the new year, as appose to being stuck with him until this time next year. If he does a good job, i'm sure a contract renewal for him will be on the table.

Phil Brown. The master of negotiating new contracts.

Desperation signing and the 5 month deal shows that! Not better than what we let go in Prosser & Bolger

No, he's better than those 2 and has the potential to be much better. Prosser was terrible when he first came to us, however, I give him a lot of credit for working hard to improve, ended up a strong "**** and Vinegar" player in the end, basic, but hard working aggressive team player. Bolger was terrible at first, however showed flashes of his potential, but never seemed comfortable to be at "Roots Hall". Sokolik has a a history and credibility with us, seem composed and comortable playing for us in the past. Surprised and confused about the 5 month contract though.

Agree with all that, and like you I raised my eyebrows at the 5-month contract. What we don't know is if there are triggers in it to automatically extend. My guess is the devil is in the detail, which we will never be fully party too.

Decent signing as has the pedigree to be a great player - much better than either Prosser or Bolger will ever be. I think the difference is that they were pretty much the finished article, whereas Sokolik still has some potential left in him if he applies himself. He couldn't do much better than having Graham Coughlan as a coach and Adam Barrett as a mentor - both fine examples of players in his favoured position.

Decent signing, hasn't set the world alight previously but he's young with pedigree and can improve. He'll be battling Thompson to partner Barrett, for me Thompson would be ahead atm.

5 months with view to a longer contract seems unusual but probably suits both parties, he probably wants reassurances he'll play, so if after 5 months he hasn't played much or well enough then bye bye.

Welcome back Jakub.
