I genuinely believe that Jakob will go on to be a very good defender given the right encouragement and a decent run in a team. None of those things are happening for him at Southend and sadly it probably is best if he leaves. Will Inniss fill the gap? maybe when fit, and we don't know how long that will be. The irony is that if he goes to Plymouth he stands a very good chance of returning to FL1 with them, we shall see I guess. Until all this happens he is still a Blues player and he gives us CB cover. Lets hope none of our current first pairing gets injured and we are then left bare without cover.

Just an observation - Adam Thompson took an age to develop into the player he is today, and we gave him that time including recovery from a long injury. It's a shame we can't do the same for Jakob, but it's PB's shout.

In all this discussion about individuals, let us not forget that there is the rest of the team to consider. All of the defence (and Oxley) is benefiting from having a well balanced midfield in front of them now (and how good that is to see) and the midfield is benefiting from having a good strike force in front of them.

I suspect that even the most gifted and brilliant defender would struggle with the way we were playing/set up earlier in the season.

Barnard was at the end of his usefulness, Clifford had potential that at 25 now has not materialised, Pigott had attitude and Cassidy at 23 needs to pull his socks up as he had something about him. All you have shown is that with these PB was no better with them than any other manager.
We did, though, have a squad earlier this year that did have more ability than the results showed. PB could not muster them. I am glad he has the personnel that can do the business and aid the team and results/performances are great. I applaud the side that he has built but still believe his past record shows the inability to get the best out of average players and we are a club that will always have it's share of those.

Apart from the ones who got us promoted from L2 of course. Oh sorry I forgot that day at Wembley was one of your worst.

I've been watching some great stuff lately from the likes of Will (he brings nothing to the team) Atkinson or Adam (league 2 at best) Thompson

We started the season without Ferdinand, Ranger, Fortune, Wordsworth, Timlin and Oxley and Cox needed time to settle. Now I know this improvement has spoiled the end of your year but the league is decided in May not September. Aren't you glad that the people who matter at the club didn't panic and try and sign anyone just to please a few fans.

Remember we had idiots on here telling us how Port Vale have got it right by signing 12 foreigners nice and early in the summer.....Wonder what Bruno Ribeiro is up to at the moment.

Completely agree, no-one is getting past those two at the moment, but that doesn't mean we should release/ditch every other option available. Wouldn't take much for Ferdinand to pick up an injury and then we're left with just Dan Matsuzaka or John White playing out of position.

True but we do have Barrett so lets not completely right him off. If Sokolik is going then PB clearly has someone else in mind.

I am not alone in believing our league 2 promotion could have been easier. As for Atkinson and Thompson, I have never slated them, and they are very capable at this level. Thompson may well go on and do well higher. Atkinson I am unsure of but maybe he is a late bloomer and will get better and better.

You put your opinion forward and I countered with mine. It's a shame you have to resort to labelling those that disagree with you as idiots. Still, I am sure it gives your argument strength even if only in your mind.

Despite the current run, and I for one am pleased about it, it is not clear PB gets the best out of better players. We saw with Hunt previously that better players know their business and get on with it. They were better players to start with and the manager has neither made them or moulded them. What appears clearer is that PB failed to get more from lesser players and the ability to do so is the mark of a good manager.

So if I'm reading this right you believe that PB doesn't get 'the best of the better players' or indeed 'more from lesser players'. What is your opinion(for what it is worth) on his ability to manage AVERAGE players then? Let me guess.

Why don't you just say 'I don't like the manager and it's personal' instead of trying to justify your opinion with a load of old pony?

Personally I think it's a shame we never saw Sokolik alongside Ferdinand. I never rated Thompson, I always thought he was a L2 centre-half but the improvement in him alongside Ferdinand has been remarkable. Perhaps Sokolik would have shown similar improvement alongside when handed an opportunity at some stage, he was certainly very impressive when partnered with Egan a few seasons ago. Real shame, good luck to him and I hope he does well if he ends up at Plymouth.

Anton Ferdinand has been one of our most important signings by far and Brown deserves credit for that one.

If Jacob has been offered a contract at Plymouth and a chance to play for a further contract then I believe PB has done the correct action by allowing him to leave (hence no contract offer to confuse issue) and make the most of his career.
I like Jacob and would have kept him, and offered him a contract for next season too; BUT not at top money and with the spoken discussion with him that he was only likely to be a sub/3rd choice.

Finally, could Timlin play at CB? Brentford switched Macca to a CB and he does well enough there.

Too short and lacks the physical presence for me. Macca was a bit more of a unit whereas Tims is pretty slim and even if he is a real warrior I can imagine the likes of Steve Morrison, James Hanson, etc having a field day against someone half as tall and half as wide as them.

Haven't we played Lenny at CB as a last resort before though?

I would have kept him and tried to persevere ah la Thompson. But, if we can replace with someone ready made/better it's an improvement in the squad. Nothing less will do.

Sokolik has lost heart at not getting any game time at the club. Just look at his lame attempt at tackling when we conceeded the late goal against Coventry after Ferdinand went off. Good player with the right encouragement but not here, best he moves on to get what he needs.

Ah yes - but there have been a few examples this season of year long loan players going back to their proper club so it is an option if both clubs are in agreement.

And I suspect that is the problem. He IS developing, just not so much in the 1st team - if Swansea are happy with that then that's up to them.
