Fairly good weather for football had drawn a crowd of 176 to Athletico Vange Arena. Athletico tactics involved an interesting 4-4-2 combination. The following players had been chosen: Hill - Chahal, Perraudin, Ewing, Salisbury - Elrick, Adamson, Hathaway, Salter - Henson, Damiano.
Southend had chosen a strategic 3-4-3 formation. The following players had been chosen: Wiegand - MacElheran, Martin, Landen - King, Huhtaniemi, Bennett, Healy - Askenbom, Moore, Lambert.
Evan Henson sailed high, high above the opponents as he headed the 1-0 in after a corner kick after 12 minutes of play. In the games 13th minute the visitors levelled to 1 - 1 as Andy Moore struck home on a bar rebound, following a shot from the right. After 15 minutes Andy Moore made a speedy advance and dropped the ball to Alex Lambert who shuffled the ball past the keeper. The score was now 1 - 2. 17 minutes into the game Evan Henson had to leave the pitch due to a knee injury. In came Jonathan Patrick. Southend seemed to suffer a certain amount of confusion about the organization of the team. Brian Huhtaniemi increased the visitors lead by putting a volley shot away on a pass from the right. 1 - 3. The structure of the game started to change as Southend decided to pull back and meet their opponents in the defensive zone. The visitors David Healy took advantage of an error due to a misunderstanding between the home side´s goalie and full backs in the 25:th minute. 1 - 4 for Southend. The game had been on for 27 minutes when David Landen broke through to the right, upping the score to the home crowd´s dismay. Southend´s were up 1 - 5. After several obvious shirt pulling incidents, Southend´s Björn Askenbom got himself booked. The teams went for a half-time break at 1 - 5. Southend, bringing the final ball possession rate to 70 percent, dominated the battle.
Southend -coach had an extra briefing during the break, and after that his players looked a lot more organized. In the 49:th minute Southend put themselves up 1 - 6 after an attack from the right, caused by a defensive blunder. Scorer was Alex Lambert. Southend increased the lead to 1 - 7 as David Healy scored from the penalty spot, putting the ball in near the top left corner. In the 61st minute Southends Alex Lambert received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first. The Athletico player was Anton Elrick who had to be helped off the pitch, unable to finish the game, but Jeffrey Knock came in to finish the match. Andy Moore increased the visitors lead by putting a volley shot away on a pass from the right. 1 - 8. The fortyfive minutes were dominated by Southend, with an impressive 73 percent possession of the ball.
The most dominating Athletico player was without a doubt Clemens Damiano. Darren Adamson on the other hand, had a terrible day. Southend´s best player was Andy Moore. Jeffrey Bennett was a disappointment, however. The match ends 1 - 9.
