Podcast / Fanzine Shrimperscast

Thanks for the heads up. The two COSU interviews offered up some great information and are well summarised by Beermonster in post #7.

One gripe: I lost count of the number of times Justin was interrupted or talked over during the two interviews. So frustrating when it's him we want to hear from.

Great work though, and thanks again for sharing it on SZ as I'm not sure I'd have come across it otherwise.
He got more out of them ‘in an hour’ since the cliffs forum compared to any other media stream. Questions and format were fantastic.

Quick bump on this thread. Every fan should listen to this. Helps to temper unrealistic expectations.

We are all so desperate for a bit of on field success but this new ownership model if successful could be a total game changer and not just for us.
Totally agree, no point going on about Kev's position being under threat without grasping COSU'S approach to expectations of what on field success over the next 5 years is.

Why though? None of what justin said made me think that Southend united will be example to follow for lower league clubs....... not like other small clubs don't cut there cloth accordingly, clubs like crewe have been doing it for years. The information iv gathered is they are heavily reliant on fans to keep turning up to make there business plan in the short term to work without having not to keep putting there hands in there pockets.

You dont find the concept of a club not relying on a single benefactor and being at the whim of their wallet, and a collective of local business people with the club at heart with flexibility for people to join or leave a good idea?

I much prefer that to being a rich mans plaything, or at our level prey for property developers.

It's great idea but nothing new though. They are also reliant on ron to provide funds for this new East stand which is bit worrying given ron track record of delivering nothing. I like some of there ideas but they do need to show bit more ambition in the transfer market...... can't expect 7k week with sub standard football on show, can't be 1 way street. Let's see what January and summer transfer window brings.

Yeah I mean spending a fee on a proven National League striker in Josh Walker. Bringing in a defender who played over 40 matches in the EFL last season.

Bringing Moncur in was a massive lack of ambition, and Bonne. Although admittedly Bonne hasn’t hit the ground running yet.

Ron will have to make those payments if he wants to build on Fossetts Farm. The City Council will deal with this.
I am not expecting much in the way of transfer business until January at the earliest. I would go as far as to say that if we had been able to do transfer business in May , then neither Moncur or Bonne would have been signed. However, no one in May could have foreseen losing the spine of our side in just a week.
Has been said many times before that promotion is just one of many priorities. All of which need dealing with yesterday.
I expect our Football Department will be looking forward to being properly active in the Transfer Market at the best time to bring players in. That hasn't happened for a good few years, thanks to you know who.

Walker didn't cost alot as Burton were quite happy to get him off there wages, orient are paying 50% of the wages maybe even more, gubbins was free but not 100% sure. Cardwell and kensdale haven't really been replaced. Bonne was just 1 year punt.

Walker still cost a fee, as did Crowther and Waldron. 50% of his wages, you know that for sure? IF what you say is true, we still have to pay the other 50%. Gubbins was a free, but we beat EFL clubs to his signature, so wouldn’t have been the cheapest.

Bonne, you class as a punt, but we still have to pay wages, signing on fees etc so isn’t free.

Cardwell & Kensdale will be replaced.

Waldron and crowther were last January from part time sides for peanuts. The fact is that Cardwell and kensdale haven't been replaced which leads fans questioning COSU lack of ambition in the market which I have right to do so. I'm sorry but your argument doesn't carry much weight when top players for Southend haven't been replaced yet. Hopefully in January and the summer transfer window COSU will give maher better backing instead of 1 year punt off scrap heap.

Doesn’t matter what the fee was, we paid fees. You can dispute it and say it’s peanuts but they are facts.

Of course you have a right to do so, just as I have a right to defend them. My argument carries as much weight as yours when you say we haven’t been ambitious, yet we’ve spent money.

Does make me laugh when I got stick for saying how Maher likes to do the recruitment in terms of their character, off the field stuff, making sure they are the right fit etc and others said we should just sign people and take a punt. Those same people are now knocking in.

Hopefully January and the summer we won’t be hamstrung by the previous regime, we will be able to be quick off the mark and sign the players we identify, like we would have had COSU taken over before they did.

If you want to question their ambition, and knock them, why not come and see Justin this Saturday at my Roots Hall Run. I’m sure he’ll be happy to answer any questions…

This thread is going from upbeat to sinking in the mire. Oh well, at least we still have a club to whinge about.

The fact is Southend haven't replaced there 2 best players with sufficient quality that's fact, Which has left maher & co hamstrung on the pitch..... so how have Southend shown ambition when they haven't replaced there 2 best players? Southend went into September with 1 striker available for goodness sake, doesn't exactly strike of ownership backing there manager does it..... i dont see how your argument can stand up. I will acknowledge the fact COSU walked into a mess with Southend so from that aspect i get things will take time to get Southend back to professional standard. I would love to meet Justin this Saturday but unfortunately I have to work this Saturday.

I agree with this but it's not just the fact that they're not longer at the club but the manner in which they departed:

Cardwell had a release clause triggered and was THE attacking lynchpin in the side.

Kensdale shot himself in the foot entirely of his own volition and has potential ruined his whole football career as a result. He was also, arguably, the key defender for a possession based team

All this happened in the same short period at the end of the summer as we lost 2 of the midfielders in our starting XI and have struggled to get other forwards fit. Most 'proper' transfer business was completed at this stage by serious clubs but Ron Martin's unwillingness to sign over the club until July meant that we were yet again missing out on top tier targets to improve the squad.

Instead we have lost significant quality (both temporarily and permanently) which has in turn affected performances & results on the pitch.

The podcast states that COSU will give Kev & John S a budget for wages & transfers and that, while they'll be expected to stick to it, there is wiggle room for the right player to come in that will genuinely see us challenge at the top end of the table.

COSU are not interested in promotion, they have said that their priority is to rebuild the crumbling and rotten infrastructure and operating model that caused Southend to fall out of the EFL in the first place. They want a solvent football club (or close to break even as any reasonable business plan will allow).

This is going to be a long year, because with only one guaranteed automatic spot and us in 16th with over 25% of the season played, we are again staring down the barrel of 18 more months of non-league football.

Now is the time to be patient & supportive of everyone at the club IMO

All these fans crying out for a bit of ambition to be shown - who would you be signing at this point? Who's available out there who would be of the quality/character needed? What if we pay fortunes to get a striker in who's 'better' than what we've got and he gets injured first game?? COSU are building for the long term and tbh I am personally pleased they aren't panicking .. nobody moaned when Moncur and Bonne were announced but because we're not top of the table suddenly recruitment is all wrong?

They have shown ambition with the level of player, and the fees they have outlaid so far. Whilst we haven’t been “pulling up any trees” isn’t exactly down to COSU.

Our primary target to replace Cards is injured elsewhere. We can’t do anything about that. In terms of Kensdale, I believe the plan is for a “project” very much like Kensdale was in the first place. Without injuries, we currently have Ralph, Gubbins, Crowther & Taylor. We’d be mad to spend the same sort of money in wages on another one, when only three will play. Yes, you can talk about squad depth, injuries, suspensions etc. I’ve heard of a name I like the sound of a lot as the potential “project”. Would you bring in a “project” now, when he won’t come straight into the team, or in January/February time when he will be able to get used to full time training, and then ultimately have a pre-season and hit the ground running next year. Brooklyn was a project but with a very busy father unfortunately.

We’ve been unfortunate in losing the spine of the team within the space of 7/10 days. However, you can’t replace Cards and everything he did in the blink of an eye. Kensdale, we did at least have Crowther already in the building. So Crowther has replaced Kensdale, the question is who replaces Crowther.

We’ve also got players that haven’t hit the ground running, players out of form, and a spell of Saturday/tuesday/Saturday and away days. Yes they are excuses, but they are also reasons too.

I think this season was always going to be tough to expect promotion. Yes I wanted to be higher in the table, and I still think the playoffs is achievable.

The next player we will need to replace is Gus. Although Wind is in the building already.
