Just goes to show.......Barnard wasn't the problem.

Unless it was mainly confidence?

People go on about formations and things and while we probably weren't set up in an ideal formation for Barney, the idea that a decent striker like him can't adapt is silly. His confidence was rock bottom, and he was missing awful chances. It seems he's found a bit of a form which is what the loan was about IMO. Hopefully he'll come back confident and be much more productive and useful to the squad and team.

Agree with all of that. Sturrock also constantly changed systems but we were hardly net busters. By his own admission Sturrock admitted that he fiddled about too much at times during games, actually causing confusion. Many of the games I have watched recently or listened too Brown has changed the formation regularly during the game and been praised or criticised for it, it still didnt contribute to improving our goalscoring capability or Barnards. Its hardly been one rigid set up designed to ensure Mr. Barnard cant find the net?

What proof do you have of that? Barney's problem was not getting enough opportunities - both in playing and in actually getting selected. He doesn't fit Brown's preferred system, that is the issue.

I spoke to the guy and performed a battery of psychological tests.

No, hopefully he'll be offloaded from the wage bill at the next opportunity. Wait and see the difference in how many he scores before getting a contract with Stevenage and how many afterwards.

whether he fits into Browns system or not, the fact remains that he hasn't scored a goal for
us in open play since he returned! He has scored 2 penalties and possibly missed one too....and that's it....22 appearances later.

Lee Barmard is not our answer to this critical issue we have of needing a finisher. He is on a purple patch with Stevenage at the moment, but guaranteed he'll come back and within a few weeks we'll wish he hadn't.

poor poor signing by Ron!

Barney reborn at Boro?

Friends of mine watched the game and were impressed by Lee,He scored a great goal then a tap in and also managed to hit the bar with a thunderbolt.

I would be amazed if he returned to play under Philip again.

Barnard's goals for those who want to see them, first was him scoring into an open goal and the second was Lee picking up the ball a few yards from goal and choosing to go round the keeper.

Couple of good goals there and just shows he hasn't lost that instinct of getting into those positions.

Should we have loaned him out? Just because he is scoring there doesn't mean he would have been scoring here. He goes out on loan to get match time to build up confidence. If he does well, then he can go straight back into the side with Corr up front. If he doesn't, then we haven't lost out on anything and probably get someone off our wage bill for a month.

Should he come back in? If he comes back full of confidence and he wants to still be here then why not. If he carries on like this at Stevenage and comes back full of confidence, then he goes straight into the team for me. Big question is if he wants to come back or does he think that starting a fresh somewhere else will see him return to his best or close to it.

Agreed completely, can't green this sadly.

Wow, amazing goals. On both occasions Barney had no outfield player within a 3-6 yard radius of him when he received the ball and was no further than 7 yards (being generous to him) from and facing the goalmouth. The first goal he scored, he didn't even have a keeper to beat.

I think it's fair to say that both goals were MASSIVELY assisted by his colleagues.

I looked at the tranmere game too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohhqHLtERJo - 1:38) and whilst a good finish. The setup came from an outrageous howler by the Centre Half that put his partner on the backfoot a bit, allowing Barney to run through and finish.

None of the 3 goals I've seen have changed my mind on him, but with goals comes confidence....Maybe he might start scoring goals borne from quality over luck as he carries on.

When a manager promises you that you will be given a run in the team, and then promptly sends you out on loan, how would you feel? Would you want to return? Would you trust the managers word again? not sure that I would.

If I were Lee Barnard I would not want to come back, but he may have to seeing as he is under contract.

Goals from tap ins count excactly the same as goals where the player has beaten eight players and smashed it in from 30 yards.

The point has always been that Barnard is a goalscorer. He was in there to score those goals. Other players wouldn't have been. Play him in a system where you create chances and he will put a lot of them away.

If you want a striker to contribute to overall build-up play and create space for others then that isn't Lee Barnard. It isn't for Barnard to adapt to the formation and tactics of the manager. He can't becoming bigger or stronger and faster than he is. He's a goal poacher and if he comes back to Southend then Phil Brown needs to play him in a formation where a poacher can get some goals. Otherwise there's no point in him being here.

Brown never wanted him here in the first place and certainly never signed him!

Maybe Ronny might try his hand as manager?:winking:

Presumably we can watch him for ourselves on Thursday against Maidstone, 7.45 pm BT sport. Be interested to see what people then think about the system issues and there relevance?

More goals from open play in 2 games than Barry Corr has scored all season, i know who i'd rather have at the moment, who cares if 2 of them weren't pretty. Also how does capitalizing on a defensive mistake take away from the quality of the goal?

Brown has confirmed he will definitely be returning at end of loan spell, could be a win win for everyone....barney got game time and goals....we get an in form striker.

By that token, I should rock up at the hall for a trial!!! Most 7 year olds could have scored those goals. No show of strength, pace, agility, heading, control, flair....even finishing to some extent.

my main point was that his colleagues can claim the plaudits for 70% + for those goals. How many times has Barney been put in those "open goal" situations with our midfield? Therefore he needs to get his goals by showing more quality and being able to turn a defender or send some 20 yard screamers in. Otherwise he'll come back
to his barren run which is no good to us or him.

we need someone who makes things happen
