Well surely I have just come up with a few....

Asian youth club when i was growing up I couldnt attend, a gym I cant attend as I dont fit the muff only policy, first 50 women get in free to a nightclub but men have to pay and that was saturday night, Rasta's allowed to smoke drugs in the street but I am not, Islamic mortgages as Muslims do not believe in paying interest which apply to muslims only, Muslims only team that play football in the Brighton league who I played against but cant play for, Southend United giving cheaper ticets a few years ago to people with an Asylum Seekers card, LTSB not charging overdraft interest on overdrawn current accounts opened with an Asylum Seekers card....need I go on??

Nightclub - its a marketing ploy, because they know you'll go wherever the women go and they know you'll pay.
Rasta - become a rasta, wy don't you convert?
Islamic mortgages - again Islam is a religion, you aren't prevented from converting
Muslim only teams - again nothing stopping you converting
cheaper tickets - also for unemployed, students etc people who wouldn't otherwise come. Again its because they know that you'll pay the full whack so they charge you the full price

What more details do you need ?

I presume she's not with her husband any more?
Why won't her kids help?
Is there no-one who can appeal on her behalf? It might be a case of too long a waiting list
Or can she talk to her MP?
Is there any cash left from the sale of her house? This can be used against her in assessment, I suppose
Is there anywhere else in the county she can go? Might have a better chance of being housed?

I don't know the whole story - these are just a few things off the top of my head. It's sad when this happens, but cases like these are genuinely rare as they can be resolved quite quickly

The true facts are ....I, as she new my mother before my mother died ..have paid and still do to this day for her everyday expenses mobile fone whatever about £50 a week. She has to survive on I think it is 18 pounds a week as her benifits pay for the care home...Now this I understand is fortunate ...She does have care now paid for by the state. I think they charge the local council about £1500 a week for this. But she hasnt her freedom or her pride anymore.She would like to get back into society after a few years adrift.I doubt she will. The list and obstacles she faces are to huge. I have spent many an hour fighting her cause..My sons Mother is The Top Lady in Social services in Southend and has tried her utmost. Its all about a "points" system.If you get enough you get promoted....

Now where have I heard that before.

I think saying you can easily convert isnt the point of the discussion, its about inclusion and exclusion. To use the mortgage as an example. Its not as simple as saying "hey, i want a nice mortgage, ill convert to Islam and job done".
Now if an Islamic mortgage is only available to people who are islam, then that isnt right, however if there is a similar mortgage available to everyone with exactly the same financial aspects, then why call it an islamic mortgage?

A Shariah compliant mortgage is hardly giving Muslims more rights. The whole point of it is so that they can have the same rights (eg the opportunity to own their own home) without them having to compromise on their religious beliefs.

As far as I know anyone can apply for an Islamic mortgage, the Islamic bit just means that it is compliant with Islamic laws, not that it is open to only Muslims. Its like eating Kosher food. There's nothing to stop you eating Kosher food, but you probably won't bother because its almost certainly more expensive and/or inconvenient that just getting your un-Kosher food from your nearest shop.

It is interesting to see how many of DtS's objections to discrimination are based on religion, when he said he felt persecuted on pretty much every other ground - race, colour, class, gender - except religion. In fact, I expect DtS isn't even religious (although he has been known to dress as Jesus).

People saying that they are discriminated against is IMHO largely a case of ignorance. They have only experienced one side of the coin and are oblivious to the hardships faced, and only recognise the instances where they have been disadvantaged, not the examples where they have been advantaged.

What about those who were educated at a Catholic school (Tommy Moore, St Bernard's, Our Lady of Lourdes etc) - how many Jewish or Muslim kids went there? How many Sikhs or Muslims went to Scouts (an organisation which is linked to Christianity, holds regular church parades etc)? How many times have you gone down the pub drinking with your boss (an option many who don't drink for religious reasons would feel awkward doing), maybe even had an informal interview there which helped clinch a job/promotion? How many times have you been denied a visa for a foreign country when someone sees you have a British passport? Do you earn the same or more as your female contemporaries (despite it being illegal, men still on average earn more than women)? How do you know that you didn't get your job ahead of a more qualified disabled candidate?

I'm not supporting discrimination, I'm just trying to provide the counter-argument to get some balance.

Your example is a very sad case, but if you want me to give the positive side, I suppose the positive side is the council are paying £1,500 a week. I know its not freedom and pride, but its something (and that is a hell of a lot of money).

The £1500 a week is the total madness of it. Which is why I mentioned the figure. They would rather pay that and give her no life,than reduce that figure and give her pride back at a much smaller price ...This she wants , but as I have said no chance of having while she is pushed to the back of the queue.

True story, a white South African guy i worked with tried to join the Employee's of African descent group and wasnt allowed to join as it wasnt aimed at him..... :(

That reminds me of a night at uni. There was an African night held in the club on campus. A mate of mine was South African but was refused entry on the grounds that he was white. Not only is this racist but clearly incorrect as he was of AFRICAN origin. How shocking is that?! :mad:

Why should I have to convert to being any of the above in England just to get these benefits? I am hardly going to convert to Islam just to get a better mortgage deal am I?
