Scotland worried about losing their identity!

ok "put up an electric fence and keep the jocks out" was just the jist of what that poster said, the actual wording was quite clearly geared not to be banter

I think this has rumbled on for far too long, but i just want to add that the poster who made the above jibe has been a personal friend of mine for the best part of 20 years, and i can assure you it was banter ... if you can't take it as such then i really don't see what else can be said

thanks mate. my whole post only said 'rebuild build it, wire it up to the electric and plug it in. that would stop them coming south.' that and nothing else so the whole bit about i said this that and the other is not correct and i added that on page 2. to be honest tho i don't care if the whole of scotland hates me i live far enough away for it not to bother me.

as you say not sure what else can be said other than are there any welsh on this board.

I think you are being unreasonable if you expect to see not one iota of anti-scottish sentiment on what is after after all a football website for an english club team - is there honestly no anti-english sentiment on any scottish club websites?

"put up an electric fence and keep the jocks out" seems to me to fall clearly into the category of banter - whether it was funny or not is down to individual taste
i'm not sure if you find the word 'jocks' offensive - if it is then no more so then sassenachs, nigels or whatever other hilarious names scots give to the english

I have nothing against scottish people as individuals and am happy to have scots in southend's fanbase - even displaying the scottish flag at matches - though I do seriously wonder would an english flag displayed at a scottish club match be so readily accepted by scottish fans?

the key to this debate I think is that many scots have for a long time been quite vocal about their anti-english views and expected english people to accept that meekly - and for a long time we have though I think that is changing slowly and scots are finding to hard to take what for a long time (certainly all my lifetime) they have dished out

This is 100% spot on....it is so accurate that you would not believe it. I just read it to my wife who is a born and bread Aberdeonian and she agrees 100%. She said to me that she is surprised that the English get so much abuse and anti English sentiamrts with out it coming back from South of the border.....well IMO...things are changing and the English are starting to stand up and say...hey, i am English and Proud of it and if you dont like it Jock then tuff sh*t

ok "put up an electric fence and keep the jocks out" was just the jist of what that poster said, the actual wording was quite clearly geared not to be banter.. which is why i took offence.. sometimes during text its difficult to figure out if someones being sarcastic/serious etc...

yes if you look at rangers they have nothing else than st. george's flags and union jacks flying at their end... but i see kinda the point your making although i do fly the Lion Rampart at away games but its associated to Southend United by having SUFC and Scottish Shrimpers on it... so there should definalty be no problem with that as you said...

out of interest have you wondered why there has been so much anti-english views from the north of the border... a prime example is this and i'll be interested to see your response because this is a debate and not a slanging match which is good... but the example is 'god save the queen' is the national anthem for Great Britain... yet the english football team sing it as their own... to others non-english dont you agree that portrays that english football is basically saying 'england is britain and thats all that matters', the rugby team doesnt do it, surely that isnt right that the english FA use it?

obviously there is a sense of jealously.. especially over the last 10 years in overall sporting terms as while we've been struggling to repeat previous success in the 70s, 80s and 90s...

also you'll find that only i'd say 50% of scots have anti-english views, theres many scots that will support their country first and full most but also will support england and the other home nations too...

(probably my last post til sunday as off to carlisle)

Sorry fella but i have to disagree with you there.........i have lived here for 5 years and IMO would say that the deep routed feeling towards the English (that a lot of Scotts don't admit to in public) is very very anti English, i would say 80% min.

The majority of Scotts hate the English for one reason and one reason only, they have been brought up by there parents and parents parents to hate the English.....it is extremely deep rooted and very strong.

I do truly feel that most of the Scotts that hate the English don't really know why they do but it is like a culture thing that has manifested itself over the last few hundreds years.

I was absolutely gutted to see Macedonia beat a fellow British team . The last time I felt this bad was when Scotland went 1-0 down to The Faroe Islands in 1999 - The Faroe Islands had a dog in goal that day (tied to one of the posts) as they couldn't get a full team out. :zip:

I don't pretend to understand all the stuff surrounding Rangers and their fans but the little I do know makes me think displays of St George Cross flags by their fans has little to do with football.
So I would rephrase my question to say that, Rangers apart, would scottish clubs fans be as tolerant of english flags displayed at scottish club matches as southend fans are of your scottish flag? I think you or more less conceded they wouldn't in your post.

As to GSTQ, I don't care for it much either as an English anthem or a British one - a national anthem should be about the country and its people not the royal family, though that's another debate altogether.

To play devil's advocate, if Scots feel the English are annexing GSTQ for their own use why don't you start using it for your anthem?
I could also say what''s it got to do with Scots what anthem England use? How would you feel if started telling you what anthem you can use?

To suggest "english football is basically saying 'england is britain and thats all that matters'" is plain bonkers - I think the English FA are just too lazy and stuck in their ways to change it - and its worth remembering the FA was run by a Scot for a few years.

Rather than saying England is Britain, many of us are trying to argue the case for being allowed any English identity at all. Too often we are expected to be British first and English second if English at all. Whereas its deemed perfectly acceptable for you to be Scottish first and British second if British at all.
Multiculturalism, for all its good intentions, has left many English people feeling that every nationality is included and celebrated except for English which is overlooked or denigrated. Even expressing these kind of sentiments will attract accusations of being, at best, a Little Englander, and, more likely, a racist - and I think this is the point Old Blue Lady was making in her post earlier in this thread.
