Scotland worried about losing their identity!

firstly i'll have you know theres members of southend fanbase that do come from scotland and i think you should stop being an ignorant ****!!! theres as many scots in england as there are english people moving to scotland...

secondly, we aint good enough!!! behave!! english sport is in crisis... your 16th in the world rankings (1 ahead of scotland!!!), your rugby seems to be on a decline, you've just been torn apart in test cricket by south africa, you have no tennis players!

some ignorant minded people dont even understand that england is 8 times bigger than scotland in population terms so of course you should ****ing welll be better than us...you also dont seem to understand that with a population of 5-6 million we do ok with the funding our sports get... its quite clear we're not 17th best football team in the world, im a realist and we're punching above our weight, rugby we do fine, and cricket isnt even one of our national sports so thats a none starter.. and the tennis number 1 is scottish i do believe as was the most successful athlete of the beijing olympics!

the fact you have to remind the scots, welsh and northern irish constantly that your better than us is all for the simple reason that you are BIGGER than us, with a lot more FUNDING and so therefore should be doing MILES BETTER than us all..

think it is pathetic and its attitudes like this that makes me what scotland to be completely independant from Great Britain.. you all seem to forget that we're part of the british economy and army and so forth!!! i didnt have a choice where i was raised, it just so happened to be in sunny essex that i was brought up.. but im still proud of country and where i come from and i wont have ingnorant *******s like the some of you belittle my nation!

remember great britain does not equal england, theres four nations involved!

problem is many english people have had experience of scottish "ingnorant *******s" belittling our nation of which we are equally proud as you are of yours

....but rarely allowed to show for fear of upsetting some minority or another.

spot on OBL - of which scots are one - I have always found they like to mock england but moan like hell when they get a similar response about scotland

If only you knew how 100% true that is....5 years in Scotland now and i have to put up with constant abuse, and jingoistic comments. I feel proud to be an Englishman but if i even breath the fact that i am proud of my nation, i get shot down in flames.

I am not anti Scottish by any stretch of the imagination. I work for a Scottish company, i am friends with the 1st Minister and i have married a Scottish woman....in a kilt may i add.

But what pushes my buttons is not that the Scottish constantly bang on about how wonderful they are and how the English are a bunch of W****ers.
It is in fact that if they act like that, it is classed as being patriotic but if I as a Proud English man act the same....I am labelled as an Arrogant English Wa*nker full of him self

They even want to ban England from playing the national anthem because in verse 2 (which is never sung) it refers to fighting the Scottish.

HELOOOOOOOOO...... Flower of Scotland Ring any bells......."And stood against them (Guess Who) Proud Edwards Army, and sent them homewards ta think again"

Do unto those as you would have done upon yourself!!!!!

What he said.........:p

EDIT: This also sums it up for me (in terms of the Scottish team in the Olympics issue) - "Put your money where your mouth is"

Chris Hoy speaks out

blimey i work with scottish people who i would say that too. i think the humour has completely bypassed you, maybe that got stuck at the border. ignorant yeah probably that comes from being a friend of bluebloods for many years. if i was to electrocute the wall, the power would be turned off so any shrimpers could come and see them play and so they could return. like electrocuting the wall is going to happen, jesus.

i don't care one way or another wether its a great britain team or seperate england or one of the other 3 nations whose names escape me at the moment.

i also can't stand rugby, not a fan of tennis although murray is better than henman. we've re addressed the balance in the cricket with SA and the world rankings in football mean absolutely nothing.

i do think this thread proves the english humour is better than the scottish.

firstly, i have lived in england from very on in my life and therefore went to school in england.. and i too (like aberdeen shrimper) suffered abuse/banter.. thats just the way of it.. at the start when i was young i let it affect me, but i changed my response to taking it in good heart.. and it changed from abuse to just plain banter... the likes of say southend have with colchester fans etc... so i do have a sense of humour but im sorry...

"put up an electric fence and keep the jocks out" or however else it was phrased i dont find humourous... and the point of my initial reply which admittedly wasnt clear is:

there are, however a minority, supporters that come from other countries.. one of which is scotland and that includes myself and a couple of others that i know.. i have nationalist opinions about scotland and england but you dont see me on here publically abusing/ upsetting any of the english, i keep it to myself... we are supposed to be a united group of people that support Southend United.. and i dont appreciate that kind of "banter" being made about my country which im equally proud of just as much as you all are of yours..

i dont abuse england (rangers maybe yes but thats whole another thing :)) so i would appreciate if that sort of "banter" is not used when, as i said me or any other scot on here do not do the same, actual banter however is fine of which talking about banter....

i hope you dont get to South Africa 2010!!! unless we get there of course ;)

i dont think im being unreasonable! we do all after all support the Blues!

I think you are being unreasonable if you expect to see not one iota of anti-scottish sentiment on what is after after all a football website for an english club team - is there honestly no anti-english sentiment on any scottish club websites?

"put up an electric fence and keep the jocks out" seems to me to fall clearly into the category of banter - whether it was funny or not is down to individual taste
i'm not sure if you find the word 'jocks' offensive - if it is then no more so then sassenachs, nigels or whatever other hilarious names scots give to the english

I have nothing against scottish people as individuals and am happy to have scots in southend's fanbase - even displaying the scottish flag at matches - though I do seriously wonder would an english flag displayed at a scottish club match be so readily accepted by scottish fans?

the key to this debate I think is that many scots have for a long time been quite vocal about their anti-english views and expected english people to accept that meekly - and for a long time we have though I think that is changing slowly and scots are finding to hard to take what for a long time (certainly all my lifetime) they have dished out

Teesside for Prime Minister...........;)

ok "put up an electric fence and keep the jocks out" was just the jist of what that poster said, the actual wording was quite clearly geared not to be banter.. which is why i took offence.. sometimes during text its difficult to figure out if someones being sarcastic/serious etc...

yes if you look at rangers they have nothing else than st. george's flags and union jacks flying at their end... but i see kinda the point your making although i do fly the Lion Rampart at away games but its associated to Southend United by having SUFC and Scottish Shrimpers on it... so there should definalty be no problem with that as you said...

out of interest have you wondered why there has been so much anti-english views from the north of the border... a prime example is this and i'll be interested to see your response because this is a debate and not a slanging match which is good... but the example is 'god save the queen' is the national anthem for Great Britain... yet the english football team sing it as their own... to others non-english dont you agree that portrays that english football is basically saying 'england is britain and thats all that matters', the rugby team doesnt do it, surely that isnt right that the english FA use it?

obviously there is a sense of jealously.. especially over the last 10 years in overall sporting terms as while we've been struggling to repeat previous success in the 70s, 80s and 90s...

also you'll find that only i'd say 50% of scots have anti-english views, theres many scots that will support their country first and full most but also will support england and the other home nations too...

(probably my last post til sunday as off to carlisle)

As far as I'm concerned, Rangers displaying St George's crosses at their games is a slight on my national flag. I don't want the average Scots person to judge me as a bigoted Orange walk loving, Royalist nutjob just because I happen to be English.

I would also be very happy if GStQ was ditched as an anthem both for England and for GB. As I said when the Olympics was on, if I'd ever reached medal standard I fear I'd have created a national storm with my behaviour on the podium as I would had made sure I had a large & visible St Georges Cross tattoo as well as showing a total lack of respect for a national figurehead that I don't believe in by probably chewing gum throughout the playing of the anthem!
