Scotland worried about losing their identity!

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond has rejected the idea of a British Olympic football team.

He claims that Scotland would lose its identity if a GB team was submitted in the 2012 Olympics.

If that is the case then how come there is not an issue with Scotland sending Scottish athletes to the Olympics? Does this not effect the identity of Scotland.

I think that there should be a Home Nations play off with the winning team going forward to represent GB in the 2012 Olympics.

I find it completely ridiculous, if atheletes, swimmers, riders etc from England, Scotland and Wales (and NI? I always get confused) are happy to compete under the banner Great Britain for the Olympics, why shouldn't footballers?

Spot on mate......that is exactly the reason, and they would feel a bit inferior being part of a GB team on the world stage with only 2 or 3 players in the team.

I still think that a home nations play off should be the answer.

I think the problem goes deeper than that and it is ultimately with FIFA, who I believe want a GB team to compete at World & European Championships while allowing "non" countries like San Marino & Andorra to compete. I can understand the Scottish FA being worried, however Alex Salmond is trying to make his point about Scotland being an independent nation, and when the SNP destroy Labour in the next election the SNP will be the majority party in Scotland before 2012.

I think the four 'home' countries still have 4 votes on FIFA and a combined team would mean only 1 vote. Unlikely as it may seem England have probably got more chance of getting the vote to stage tournaments if Scotland, Wales and N Ireland retain separate voting rights.

Even though he is my neighbour and a decent bloke in the local.....i could really have a ding dong with him over his blinkered headlong efforts for splitting this country up and effectively isolating Scotland.

It's not widely known but Reggae was invented by a Scotsman called Jacob McMarley. I'm sure there are many other links between the two countries as well.

Why is football even at the olympics in the first place??? It's not as if the Olympics represents the pinnacle of achievement for national football teams.

Have to agree with Salmond, I do not want to see a team GB for football either. I'd much rather that we didn't enter a team at all.

BTW the only reason Gordon Brown is pushing Britishness so hard is that they are terrified of losing their political powerbase should the Scots ever vote to for independence. The irony of that happening to this Gov't, which has done more than any other to damage the union, would be delicious.

firstly i'll have you know theres members of southend fanbase that do come from scotland and i think you should stop being an ignorant ****!!! theres as many scots in england as there are english people moving to scotland...

secondly, we aint good enough!!! behave!! english sport is in crisis... your 16th in the world rankings (1 ahead of scotland!!!), your rugby seems to be on a decline, you've just been torn apart in test cricket by south africa, you have no tennis players!

the fact you have to remind the scots, welsh and northern irish constantly that your better than us is all for the simple reason that you are BIGGER than us, with a lot more FUNDING and so therefore should be doing MILES BETTER than us all..
