We had 4th or 5th best defensive record I think, so not good enough for automatics. So yes, IMO they let us down at times.

It was 4th by one goal.

It was better than Crawleys who were in the automatics. It was also better than every team blelow us other than Oxfords.

It was also 12 goals better than when we last got promoted in this league.

Last season it would have been the 2nd best defence, the year before the 3rd best defence and would have got us promoted both years.

Hardly indicative of a defence that let us down.

Individuals can be improved without a doubt, but even if Cresswell proves to be much better than Barker the team will do well to concede only 48 goals this year.

Sooo True

Yeah I agree with this. The defence did well last season and to be honest I'm still putting my finger on why we didn't go up. It was always going to be a tough league last year with the money being thrown around at Swindon and Crawley but we did compete and should have gone up at the expense of Crawley really.

But in Gilbert and Barker we have 2 players who most of us recognise could be improved upon despite our defensive record last year. In Cresswell we have a player who captained a side who should have been challenging last season. I believe if Rotherham had replaced Le Fondre with a better calibre of striker than Alex Revell then they would have made the playoffs.

Le Fondre was bone idle but he certainly knew where the onion bag was.

Ironically, when Creswell was injured we played bad. When he was fit we played good. Not saying that we were a one man side, buy Ryan's vocals on the pitch seemed to do the job.

Yeah exactly. My point was that Le Fondre was prolific for your boys and in replacing him with Alex Revell (who has also played down here) you aren't getting a like for like. I know that you had Lewis Grabban too and you'll have to forgive me in not knowing whether he was there before or after ALF but had u had both all season you'd have made the playoffs. So for us to get the captain of a pretty decent League 2 side I'm pretty hopeful that he'll be a decent signing and could become a key player in the side.

Paul Sturrock has his critics but I don't think many of these are to do with his dealings in the transfer market. For me, he's generally bought quite well but its the tactical decisions (Luke Prosser left mid anyone) that are where he's gone wrong at times for me. Luke Prosser playing left midfield against Swindon and long balls aimed at Freddy and Benyon in the last few games of the season spring to mind.

But I'd like to think he's learned from his mistakes and is definitely worth another crack this season.

Lets just hope his medical is shorter than Kevan Hurst's or the season will have started before he actually signs..

That sounds good - I'm sure he knows this but you had better warn Cresswell to think before speaking out towards Coughlan and Sturrock - I don't think they are ready for anymore mouthy players in the changing room and in training.

I'm not saying the defense did bad last season, I'm saying it let us down. By that I mean lapses in concentration at times meant we'd concede silly goals, Accrington, Aldershot, Dagenham spring to mind

All defences make mistakes and concede silly goals now and then, it's part of football. As has been said, our defence was fairly strong overall last season. We have one of the best right-backs in the division and in Barker and Phillips we had one of the most reliable centre-back partnerships in the division.

I notice in Sturrock's interview about Cresswell that he said he's now competition for Phillips and Barker, not mentioning Prosser. Does that mean he now sees Prosser as more of a left-back and competition for Straker, and if so surely that leaves Gilbert out of the picture?

And my goodness, some nice words from Evans about us! He can be nice sometimes. Just not in the flesh.

Cresswell signs subject to a medical

Ok what is this medical .He can kick a ball he can pass to one of his own team mates . and maybe score if needed . No come on tell me how stringent is this medical .????

From what I know the medical isn't until the end of the week, so it's not actually dragging out more like hasn't actually happened yet.

The medical and final signing would have been sooner but its all down to convenience. Ryan was asked to have the medical midweek and then travel down again Friday to start pre season stuff.
At Ryans request your gaffer agreed to do the the medical and red tape and then get straight into training at the weekend.
Dont worry, he's definitely joining you guy's.

Thanks for this again RUFC. Although it did say in the OS article that the move would be completed on Friday when the medical had been completed so I don't know why everyone was panicking anyway.

So a fan of the Millers, plays for the Millers, scores for the Millers and captains the Millers ..... but now moving to a rival. He'll probably be gagging to stick one on Evans come the home and away games ........ but otherwise, as the article says, hoping for a double promotion ......... but only after a poor start sees the sacking of Evans ..........

Alex Revellator there too.
