Breaking News Retained/Released list - Wood and Waldron released

I think the forward most likely to benefit from a full pre-season would actually be Walker rather than Bonne.

Walker endured a stop-start injury hit season in which he never really got going. He picked up a hamstring injury after two games.

By the time he returned the strike partner he’d been signed to specifically start alongside - and had played all but 58 minutes of preseason/ the start of the season with - had been sold. For the rest of the season we then regularly change strike partners or shapes and he never really gets going, Braintree try and chop him in half etc.

I actually thought he finished with one of his better performances at Wembley where he looked a threat and carved out that chance all by himself.

He’s someone who may benefit from drawing a line under this season and coming back fresh in the summer. I think he has the raw ability but he always looked short on confidence. If he can grab an early goal next season we may see a different player out there. Now I wouldn’t exactly be relying on it but there is that chance he catches fire and we don’t look back in a way I don’t think we do for any of our other forwards (except maybe Kendall).
And Walker has done it before at this level.

If we are serious about doing better than last year, keeping players like Bonne shouldn't be an option we even consider. The same goes for all of the strikers except Kendall. The club should be exploring buying out Walker and Hopper.
I'd like to see us NOT buy out players contracts where we don't have to but instead strengthen the squad, which couldn't have been that horrific as we got to within 10 minutes of the football league.

Cardwell was injured and treated incorrectly. Bonne has had a run of games and not delivered. Yes, he's got other attributes, but we need a goalscorer if we're going to get out of this league. He's often only been used as an impact sub so time for an upgrade..
to correct that we need goalscorers from different parts of the tam not just from strikers ,they also need to come from the midfielders and CDs etc , the goals need to be shared around by all parts of the team just as Barnets were ,Yes we could do with a decent striker but we could really do with a couple off midfielders who know where the onion bag is also and for sure we need to look at our defence mWe have lost Golding and Goodliffe they need to be replaced .

My last say on the subject od Bonne ,Hopper and Walker , after thinking about them since the Final , im happy we are keeping them i think with a good preseason behind them many off us will be eating our words next season , what i would like is for Maher and co to sign to young up and coming strikers to keep them on there toes also 2 midfielders with pace and goal sense ,Dion Perriara would be a very good signing should we be lucky enough ,2 CDs one a commanding dominant leader and dare i say it a GK. Whether most of these are permanent signings or loanees is the clubs business as end of next season is when i fully expect a lot off changes as players contracts run out. My mind is now set on just another top 7 finishe this forth coming season but be assured the following season i will god willing im still on this earth expect a full on promotion push .

In a normal season, we wouldn't have had enough points to make the playoffs. We only got 'so close' because Gateshead completely shat the bed. Don't let a glorious playoff run distract you from a below par season.

Very harsh although true, second half of the season we would have come 4th. First half was very disrupted losing kensdale and card well and missing top targets.

The 2 guys we have let go never had the chances some others have had, is that because they never showed any promise or did someone pay over the odds for a player and he didn't want egg on his face if he didn't deliver.
I do hope this season is different, and we play players who are in form and for no other reason.
I worry about losing GW because lack of games, when he clearly has something to offer the team, so please let's just try to win games and not just protect reputations, do whats right for Southend United.

Really pleased for Bonne 🙏🏻 hopefully a deal could be made and a good pre season under his belt would really help him

His reaction to LCP scoring at Wembley and then his reaction when we lost made me tear up. I absolutely love his passion and so want it to work for him

Without the goals, he's a massive asset for us, but if he can score between 10-15 next season, that's well worth it

I think he’ll stay. Like you said, he looks to have become really passionate about our club.
I reckon the rest of the squad also have really taken to him.
It would make so much sense for everyone for him to stay. After all, anything or anywhere else would surly be a backwards move?

Half the people on here don’t rate any of Bonne, Hopper or Walker at NL level, let alone L2.

Hayes, Collin, Gubbins, Crowther, Bridge, Husin, Miley aren’t L2 quality.

To be promoted from the NL, you need a high quality L2 team. We don’t have 2 decent centre backs, or a striker, or a goalkeeper for NL let alone L2.

At least if we get promoted next season, the club have options on who stays and goes. (The long contracts were warranted for the loyalty that players like Bridge, Miley & Husin gave to the club though).
Do you honestly think there’s that much of a golf between NL & L2? Because I don’t.

But we did, there was nothing abnormal about last season. Gateshead had a first half of the season similar to our second half of the season and vice versa.

Yes I agree it was below par, and we actually picked up less points than the season before, however the embargoes, Cardwell, Kensdale situations effected the team more than the whole siege mentality thing from the previous season.

We don’t need a whole rebuild, we need 4 or 5 quality additions and we should then have a squad good enough for the top 3 and maybe even better.

Alan Devonshire, the manager at Maidenhead, has an eye for potential in a player. I wonder if Jack Wood is on his radar. It will also be interesting to see where Danny Waldron goes.
Back to his financial services job if he can't locate another full time club. I'm sure he'll locate another club but i'd imagine it will be closer to the Birmingham area

I honestly don't know what the problem was with Wood but do know Waldron wasn't particularly good at putting effort in with training and application, sometimes late, always leaving on the dot and generally not showing as much commitment as we'd like.
