redundancy

It's usually ignorance. The simplest thing they overlook is if they have 2 people doing the same job, they can only make the one who joined most recently redundant.

You cant make a person redundant, you have to make the job redundant, thus making the person doing the job redundant. If an employer makes someone redundant, then uses someone else at the company to do that job, they are breaking the law.

Absolutely - crazy the number of firms who do not do things by the book

I can relate to this story. November just gone I passed my probation with flying colours and then come March I was out the door instantly on "performance related reasons" (which was the only 3 words they used in my termination letter to cover the reasons that I lost my job). They failed to follow any disciplinary procedure whatsoever, more than likely because performance was not an issue seeing as not one single thing had been mentioned to me since passing my probation. They gave me a pay of though which while great for me in the circumstances, does still leave me jobless. I consulted a friend of a friend for some legal advice and was told that unfortunately because I hadn't worked there for over a year (only been there 10 months) I basically didnt have a leg to stand on.

It was also no coincidence that the lawyer I worked for, left a week before they got rid of me and things were generally very quiet. I think it was a cost cutting exercise without actually having to make talk of a redundancy and that they paid me off to keep me quiet in regards to this talk. Firms are pulling the disciplinary card in many cases and it is unfair on so many people.

This is what annoys me about these big city firms, they get away with it in so many cases. You realise that you really are just a number and its no wonder every is adopting the "look after number one" attitude. It's dog eat dog! It's also the reason I won't be going back up into the city and I've never been happier in that regard!
