Recommend me a Chinese Restaurant

Just looked up the Pearl Dragon on that and it had no stars!

I know, and frankly I'm very surprised. We've eaten there for over 25 years now and never, ever had any problem arising from the food. Notice that the Boatyard which is supposed to be one of the top restaurants in the area wasn't exactly overflowing with stars either.

Yep & look at McDonalds at least one has 5 stars. The local take away that I use also has no stars & I have eaten food from them for nearly 20 years & also never had a problem. Strange as last year/time they were inspected I think they had 3 stars.

Most places I think have been inspected 2 times using this new system & a cafe that I use has a sticker on the door with 3 stars. I doubt many places with zero stars will show the sticker!!

Sam, haven't gone past this first page, locally Mr Ping's on the A13 between Kents Hill and Tarpots is very nice for a sit down meal, but otherwise the Pearl Dragon in Southend is one of the best in the area.

went to mr pings in down town minneapolis cant tell you if any good, got wasted on 007 cocktails so did me mate leasky far cry from the 60s .

I had a table booked at the lovely Jade Palace in Wickford tonight, I have just called to confirm the booking and been told that they are starting their Christmas menu tonight which is not quite what we wanted.

I have decided to go elsewhere now and was wondering if anyone could recommend me a good Chinese anywhere really. Preferably an all you can eat - but not a buffet style, one where you order.

Thanks.

sam, if you read this before you leave...
take a tupper wear container with you, save me the left overs & il take it off your hands tomorrow !!

Just to put everyone out of their misery here is my report.....

Went to the New Dragon which is next to the Last Post in Southend.

Got in there and to be honest it did look a little bit slap dash. Lady on the phone had told me on the phone that it was going to be busy so she needed a deposit. I told her no as I couldn't get there from London to give her a deposit for the same night! Anyhoo, we got in there and I was sure I saw a piece of tumbleweed blow past. Not busy at all. Doesn't bother me a whole lot but it's nice to go somewhere with a bit of atmosphere which this didn't really have.

There were 8 of us, and we were sat on a big round table which was nice so we could all have a chat. It was an eat all you can and the ordering style from the menu. All food came out hot and was nice. No complaints about it at all and we were all pretty stuffed after. Had a few drinks with the meal too so when the bill came out at only £20 each (which included a £10 tip) we thought it was pretty reasonable for what it was.

Personally I wouldn't recommend it for a bday or something of an occassion but to have a few drinks and a half decent meal with mates its fine. Saying that though, I am not certain that I would go again.....

Oh and on another note about the star system.....

Just because you have a really nice meal with good service it doesn't always mean that a restaurant will have 5 stars. It can be a little misleading. As someone who used to be a floor manager at McDonalds, I know why they score so highly. Despite what some may think or have heard, MCDonalds is one of the cleanest places you are ever likely to eat and the health and safety there is paramount. You just would not believe some of the measures they take to ensure food safety. Just because a restaurant looks nice inside and has good quality food, it doesn't always mean the same is going on behind the scenes.
